Tobin Wyler is about to open the most significant exhibit in his career as a curator, and everything is going perfectly until he spots his former boyfriend chatting with his most important contributor at the black-tie reception. It goes from bad to worse because not only did Pierce Worthington once break Tobin's heart, but he's suspected of being the elusive art thief known as Jaguar, and Tobin knows his target is the highlight of the an enormous emerald known as the Green Sorrow.
Pierce is torn about seeing Tobin again. He is expected to obtain the emerald, but he knows it may damage Tobin's reputation. What Pierce doesn't expect is how quickly old feelings about Tobin rise to the surface. Hoping to ease Tobin's fears and spend time with him, Pierce offers to let Tobin keep a constant eye on him for the thirty six hours leading up to the exhibit. Thrown together again out of necessity laced with attraction, Tobin must figure out how to protect the emerald, his reputation, and his heart.
EM Lynley writes gay erotic romance. She loves books where the hero gets the guy and the loving is 11 on a scale of 10. Her Precious Gems series is best described as “Indiana Jones meets Romancing the Stone”—only gayer. The Delectable series is Gay Romance with Taste.
A Rainbow Award winner and EPPIE finalist, EM has worked in high finance, high tech, and in the wine industry, though she'd rather be writing hot, romantic man-on-man action. She spent 10 years as an economist and financial analyst, including a year as a White House Staff Economist, but only because all the intern positions were filled. Tired of boring herself and others with dry business reports and articles, her creative muse is back and naughtier than ever. She has lived and worked in London, Tokyo and Washington, D.C., but the San Francisco Bay Area is home for now.
She is the author of Sex, Lies & Wedding Bells, the Precious Gems series from Dreamspinner Press, and the Rewriting History series starring a sexy jewel thief, among others. Her books are available in print and e-book from Amazon & other book distributors.
This was a fun book to read. Not only does it have two men hot for each other despite some major past history added to current obstacles, it also contains jewels of immeasurable value, enough international intrigue to make my head spin, and some interesting plot twists that had me confused until the very end. Which didn't surprise me, since I never get these mystery-type stories. I found this one more fun to read than most though, because the descriptions of everything going on were so vivid and pulled me right into what was happening.
Tobin is a curator who is very good at his job. Organizational talent is a major strength and order his preferred state of being. He doesn't deal well with uncertainty or surprises, but is good at 'planning' himself out of trouble. He wants things done right, and his former lover, Pierce, is the exact opposite. This bugs and fascinates Tobin in equal measure and I must admit that I enjoyed watching him struggle to see which side of his personality would win.
Pierce started out as a clear suspect for me, a potential bad guy, even. It wasn't until a long way into the book that I started to suspect there was another side to him. Subtle hints (ones that even I couldn't miss) pointed at a possible alternative explanation.
Pierce's clear love for Tobin was his biggest redeeming factor for me. But, just like that wasn't enough for Tobin, it wasn't enough to convince me he deserved another chance. Imagine my relief when the final twist revealed an unexpected but totally satisfying solution. Well done, EM, for holding my attention with a type of story I don't always enjoy as much as I did this one.
NOTE: This book was provided by the author for the purpose of a review on QMO.
With this story, there is an element of who-done-it, of why-done-it, and how-done-it. Nothing is as it seems- except the hot chemistry between the protags. A worth-while read.
Apparently, I have a thing for Pierces. First, Pierce Brosnan and now Pierce Worthington. Both play con men, sexy can’t-help-but-love-’em con men – and in Tobin’s case, his is a thief. Set in the high society world of priceless art and gems, Tobin Wyler is a curator who is setting up the exhibit of his career. Enter his ex-boyfriend from Stanford University, someone he hasn’t seen in ten years. Their break-up had not been pleasant and Tobin is not looking forward to working with Pierce, whose company, Worthington Protection has been hired to protect the exhibit. Add to the fact that Tobin is convinced Pierce is the notorious cat burglar The Jaguar, only in town to steal the collection and Tobin is a nervous wreck trying to keep tabs on his ex-lover. So, Pierce suggests a compromise, Tobin will follow Pierce around 24/7 until the exhibit is over and prove he is trustworthy.
Did I happen to mention that Pierce is a con man? Poor Tobin. Well, at least he gets some hot reunion sex out of the deal before all hell breaks loose.
Emerald: Rewriting History is a delightful romp between ex-lovers who known each other inside and out and never really stopped caring for one another, just circumstances forcing them apart. Pierce is that rakish rogue who you love to hate and who pulls off the greatest heist of the century while giving himself the best alibi ever – trust me, you will have to read that scene to appreciate it! Tobin, on the other hand, is no damsel in distress. He knows Pierce is only there to steal the Green Sorrow, and while he is determined to stop Pierce, another part of him cannot help but being drawn to his first love. Their sex scenes are tempered with their long history and current situation.
Despite being only 89 pages, EM Lynley has been able to write some much defined characterizations for Tobin and Pierce. The art history and details of the exhibits seem very well researched without being an info dump. I was fascinated with this world. Combine these aspects with a fun plot, quirky secondary characters (Uncle Reggie) and you have the set up for a great story and now an awesome series as book number two, Ultramarine: Rewriting History #2 is now out.
So, all fans of The Thomas Crown Affair, Remington Steele and gorgeous but slightly shady Pierces, this novella is for you. Recommended.

The At Home with Royalty exhibit is going to be the high point of museum curator Tobin Wyler’s career…if his ex doesn’t bring things crashing down. Ten years ago, things ended badly between Tobin and Pierce Worthington, and Tobin doesn’t trust Pierce one bit, especially not around The Green Sorrow, a world-famous emerald on display at the museum. Tobin suspects Pierce of being the elusive thief known as the Jaguar. He can’t risk Pierce stealing the emerald and ruining his career, so when Pierce offers to let Tobin keep an eye on him for the next thirty-six hours, Tobin knows he can’t refuse. The clock’s ticking and Tobin has to protect the emerald – and his heart – from the man who would steal both.
There’s something so delicious about an elegant bad boy, isn’t there? Pierce certainly fits the bill as a too-sexy-for-his-own-good thief who has to face the prospect that his newest job could ruin the reputation of the man he loves. Tobin, too, has inner battles to face as he struggles with losing his heart to a man he fears would break it for a second time. The two of them are delicious heroes in their own right, but together? You’ll be fanning yourself, for sure.
Emerald: Rewriting History was such a fun read that every time I think of it, I want to re-read Pierce and Tobin’s story. EM Lynley gives Emerald: Rewriting History a dazzling energy and I can’t help but smile thinking of the sparks that fly between Tobin and Pierce. For a snappy, sexy good time, look no farther than Emerald: Rewriting History. Joyfully Recommended!
Tobin is an art director for a museum who is about to open an exhibit of royal artifacts including an invaluable emerald that has been lost for decades. Suddenly his ex Pierce shows up as a security consultant for the Sheik who now owns the gem. Tobin is not thrilled, he's still hurt about how their relationship ended 10 years ago and he's sure Pierce is an art thief who is merely planning to steal the gem. He confronts him and Pierce agrees to stay with Tobin 24/7 until the exhibit opens to prove he's not going to steal it. Tobin agrees which leads to a resurgence of lust. However the gem is stolen, using Tobin's security code. I think my prejudice is showing in this one. There was nothing wrong with the story, it was well written (except the emerald is referred to as a diamond at one point), I liked Tobin, but I just couldn't figure out why he would agree to join Pierce in an art-theft ring even if it was supposedly for altruistic reasons. You are going to get caught, or someone is going to get pissed and kill you. Are you insane? I'm finding I have issues when someone easily accepts a lover who is openly working as a criminal and, hey, love conquers all and make it okay. Sigh. So I was shaking my head at the end and couldn't believe Tobin's reaction. I would have kicked Pierce out, I don't care how hot the sex is.

I enjoyed a lot of elements about this book, but I also found it lacking in others. The story could be an interesting one, but the book is so short that it doesn't really have the time to develop into what it could be. I know that this is a series, so hopefully that will come in the next books. I really enjoyed Pierce, and found myself wanting to know more about him and his family. I didn't feel the chemistry between him and Tobin, though, and, honestly, didn't really like Tobin all that much. I think that might be what was most disappointing. Overall, a good read.
The story has potential, from the summary that I read. I always love the theme of "one who got away". However, I think there is something missing in the reunion. I can't feel the chemistry, except from Pierce (he seems to really love Tobin). BUT, I do love the world of art and museum and the idea of stealing artistic items to return it to the right owner.
