The Vegas Kings #4

The Fastball

Rate this book
She's the coach's aggravating daughter. He's the shy guy on first base. And they have no idea they're keeping the same secret.

After a devastating accident that leaves his throwing hand in shambles, MLB first baseman, Dax Sage, finds out the woman handling the PR for his recovery is none other than the gorgeous, frigid daughter of his head coach.

She's the last thing he needs in his busy life filled with baseball, late-night gaming with a woman he's never met, and raising his three teenage sisters.

Blake was raised with baseball in her blood, and she hates it for reasons she'll never admit. But when her dad's health takes a hit, she steps up to the plate to handle his latest stressor--the broken first baseman of the Vegas Kings.

She doesn't want anything to do with ball players or the game. She wants to do her job, talk to her faceless gaming partner she's falling in love with and nothing more.

But she's not about to let her dad down, and is determined to make sure Dax Sage doesn't do anything to step out of line with his recovery. With the press breathing down their necks as the new season approaches, Blake digs in deep.

Too deep. Soon enough, the shy guy of the team starts to shatter her walls and she realizes she might be falling for a type she swore to despise until her last breath.

When she finds out the secret behind her draw to Dax, she's going to fall head over heels in love, or run away without looking back.

Perfect for readers who love a good mix of sweet and sizzle, toe-curling kisses, swoony baseball book boyfriends, and a happily ever after in a standalone romance.

I live in Utah with my husband, our four kids, our dog who thinks she is human, and a rather suspicious cat. A fantasy anthology which included my work in 2018 hit the USA Today Bestseller's list. I have written several fantasy and romance novels and adore both genres!

You'll most likely find me when I'm not writing trying to keep up with the kids, daydreaming, spending time in the mountains, and drinking too much caffeine.

4-4.25 stars. A great read that I don't have many complaints about.

Things I Liked:
-the chemistry between Blake and Dax
-how Dax and Blake were falling for each other online and offline without knowing it
-Dax's sisters
-Dax's relationship with his sisters - it was very obvious he would do anything for them
-the found family trope between Parker, Griffin, Ryder, Dax (and Perfectly Broken), and their families
-Blake's dad, uncle, stepmom and sister
-that Dax went to therapy - I love when author's include therapy for their characters instead of pretending that love solves everything
-I really appreciated that Dax's injury didn't heal and forced him to retire. While it was sad, we don't often see authors taking the realistic route
-Hazel and Mason’s friendship. I am praying that Hazel is Mason’s love interest and that his book is friends to lovers trope 🙏🙏🙏

Things I Didn’t Like:
-Blake (aka Wraith) calling Dax (aka Liger) ‘baby boy’ 🤮
-Blake's ex

Things I Would’ve Liked To See:
-more of Blake bonding with Dax's sisters (e.g., it would've been nice to see interactions between Blake and Scarlette)
-more Hazel and Mason (I will be extremely upset if Hazel is not the love interest in Mason's book)
-more included in the epilogue (e.g., proposal) and an epilogue further into the future (e.g., when their baby is born)

Pros:
I liked 3/4 of the way through and things picked up more. It was clean was slightly descriptive kissing, but nothing crazy. Possibly one curse word.

And yes we want to see more of Mason now that he’s grown up. I am surprised that his stutter isn’t gone.

Cons: The nicknames were a bit strange to me. She doesn’t remind me of a wraith in any way and he is not “baby boy”. Cringe. Although I read the whole series in the previous series before this, I was getting confused, trying to remember all the names and who was married to who, and since a lot of the personalities felt similar it was hard to remember people.
This one is probably my least favorite of the series so far.
The conflict and the villain kind of came up mostly in the end, so it was kind of hard to process and felt rather random.
The main characters personalities seemed a bit all over. A lot of it was all over there wasn’t like a beginning of middle and end it was kinda like flipping back-and-forth.
The siblings were kinda quick, so I can’t really tell you who they are or what they really like. One of them has black hair and I can’t remember who’s the youngest I think Scarlett is married to a cop?

I’ve really enjoyed this series and was looking forward to this book, but was disappointed. For a good chunk of the book, I felt like Dax wasn’t a very consistent character, and I couldn’t get a good handle on his relationship with Blake. Sometimes they seemed to clash, then have a moment, then be friends, then clash again and refer to each other as prickly (in a non-enticing way) after I thought they had turned that corner. Just overall not up to the standard set by the previous books. That said, I’m excited for Mason’s book!

I liked Dax in the previous books and really looked forward to seeing him interact with his sisters in this book. Unfortunately, we didn't get a lot of on-page time between the siblings. I though the romance was sweet, but Dax lost a lot of points for me when he realized their shared secret and acted like an idiot. Blake's response to his reaction was also a killer for me.

While I liked the base story, it lost me in the details.

I loved this book, I loved the characters, I love the story. These two are possibly my favorite individuals in the series and they were perfect for each other.

The author gave both characters some trails in their history, and some character traits/flaws that needed to be understood and addressed. For the most part this was handled beautifully. And the outcome was a story that was super enjoyable.

My one question/critique is that the author should have explained Blake’s weird feelings/ fears about a certain part of the king’s stadium building. These feelings that she had towards a part of the building was mentioned several times throughout the story, and also brought up and “resolved” in the epilogue. (it mentioned her seeking professional help but also deciding to move her office) All of this throughout the story led me to believe that the author thought the connection was better explained, than I as the reader felt it was. Why was she bothered by the building. it didn’t seem to have anything to do with the bad guy in her past and I also couldn’t really connect one area of the building to her story of what happened to her mom. So it left me scratching my head where the other history, feelings, and reactions were much more understandable.

More YA reading

As with the other books by this author, these are definitely more of a young adult story with no cursing and no sexy times written about. I miss those things in my books, because a used books as an escape. And this escape was nice, but it's not something to brag about.

Overall, the stories are interesting enough to read, there's too much crap and drama with all these people. It's a bit much when you look at the grand scheme of things and everybody has a horrible tragic event in their history.

Her field anxiety seemed a bit off to me. How would her father not have picked up with that. And why, with her Uncle as a therapist and even her aunt, would she not have gotten help for that or said something to her family. She seemed to take the burden of her mom's death to heart for much too long.

Contains kisses, death of parents

I liked most of this book. It seemed like the conflict was going to be about Dax revealing who he was but then there was a curve ball. The reveal was glossed over and basically a non issue. Cue side conflict that was hinted at through the book and then became a thing. It felt like the whole other dude, emotional/physical abuse was just thrown in there. It also felt like it was referring to characters from other books. Does Jonnie’s mom have a book? (Can’t remember mom’s name). Do Shep and Trish have a book? They were written as if I was supposed to know who they were.

Dax doesn’t really seem like a nice guy in this. He seems over protective and rude. It seems like Blake needs some therapy (her anxiety would have been a better conflict than bringing in some dude whom we’ve never heard of).

It’s what I was waiting for! Reminded me of the Ward family (Karla Sorenson) but it wasn’t a knock off of the Wards. I love the world Emily has created with Perfectly Broken and the Vegas Kings. It’s all about family (born from, born to, and found). Blake and Dax were perfect for each other. They are so much more similar than they realize. They’ve experienced some bad things in their lives but it doesn’t define them. It took a bit long for them to figure “it” out but when they finally did, they were all in. I loved that when “it” came out, there wasn’t a blow up. They just accepted it and embraced it. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, if I could live in any book world, this would be it!

I received an ARC for my honest opinion.

If you are a fan of You’ve Got Mail then you will absolutely adore The Fastball by Emily C. Childs. This book is FANTASTIC!!! The You’ve Got Mail storyline has been popular since the first version released in theaters in 1940 (The Shop Around the Corner). Lately, this storyline seems to be everywhere. Some retellings have been good, some have been not so good, but The Fastball is great. In this story, the reader meets Blake and Dax, secret gamers who have been messaging and playing together for the past three years. Unbeknownst to these gamer buddies, Blake and Dax are actually coworkers. Blake works PR for the Vegas Kings, the popular Nevada MLB team, and Dax is the super swoony, shy first baseman. As online besties, Blake and Dax have a superb, but superficial, relationship. In real life, sparks (good and bad) fly on a daily basis. I found it super clever to cache the letter-writing parts of the story in the video-gaming world. So, why gaming? For Blake, she needs an outlet from her uber-controlled world. For Dax, he needs a safe-space from his overwhelming public life and all the responsibilities thrown at him from an early age when his beloved parents were killed in a car crash. What better way than to hide in his man-cave, right? Blake is my favorite character in this story. I found her to be so endearing, and her personal demons were unique. When most control freaks control, their desire is to keep chaos from their lives. But Blake is different. She is a control freak because she is trying to protect her loved ones from the evils of life. It’s really sweet of her to constantly put others first, but, man, I felt exhausted for her. I really enjoyed watching Dax grow into the man who sees Blake for whom she really is, and then fiercely desires to do everything in his power to protect her and alleviate her mountain of mostly Blake-made burdens. Blake and Dax’s road to romance is the best! It’s so sweet and swoony and endearing. I definitely left this book smiling from ear to ear. The Fastball is definitely a story I won’t soon forget.

The Fastball is a super sweet, delightfully excellent Contemporary Romance that I highly recommend. If you love the You’ve Got Mail plotline, and if you love excellently written and highly engaging romances filled with stuff, not fluff, then this is definitely a book you will want to check out ASAP!

I purchased a copy of this novel in eBook form from Amazon.com on August 14, 2023, in order to review. In no way has this influenced my review. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Game On!

I have been waiting for this release and it did not disappoint me! Dax drew me in early in the series and I’ve been wanting to know more about him and his relationship with his teenage sisters that he’s raising and how he manages that with his baseball schedule. An accident forces him to work closely with his coach’s daughter, Blake, who’s handling the PR for his recovery. I loved reading about them butting heads and figuring out why they’re so attracted to each other when on the surface they seem so wrong for each other. Emily Childs hit this story out of the ballpark again!

I've been dying for Dax's story - yes, I kept bugging Emily about it. It was totally worth the wait though!!

Dax and Blake are one of my fav couples now! I love the aspect of the unknown gaming partners!! And seeing Dax with all his sisters is fun!! (I hope we get their stories!!) Both characters pull at your heartstrings and you can't help but root for their romance!

Emily has this way of writing that just sucks you in! Did I have 4 kids and things around the house that needed my attention? Yes, I most certainly did! Did I choose to ignore everything to read this book? Yes, yes I did!!! I can't wait to read Mason's story!! Thank you Emily for always writing fantastic stories!!!

Forever in the making

Dax is the sweet quit teammate on the Vegas Kings. He's forever distracted when off the field by his phone and his cyber GF Wraith. A moment of distraction while driving and his life goes topsy turvy. Add the new ballbuster PR fixer Blake, who happens to be his coaches daughter, and life seems miserable.
Blake is pushy where Wraith is hesitant.
However, neither seem to be able to resist the magnetism. Is Forever in the making? Yes, yes it is.
I enjoyed finally getting to know shy Dax and catching up with the rest of the Vegas Kings.
Blake is sweet and thoughtful with a bit to herself.
Loved the entire series so far and can't wait for Mason's story.

Emily Child’s does it again. I know everyone on good reads gives books 5⭐️ for seemingly no reason. But damn this book really does deserve it.

It was like reading a hug. I was grinning from ear to ear through the majority of the book. Now I might be biased bc I love the movie You’ve Got Mail, and this book has some serious similarities to it.

Dax and Blake are just adorable in their own ways. I know this book has zero 🔥🔥 scenes, and usually I enjoy that, but truly it’s not needed. The sexual tension and romantic chemistry between them is written so well, it’s pretty 🔥🔥 with out it.

Honestly this will be a reread for me. Loved it!

Once again, Emily Childs masterful use of words draws the reader in to a story of deep connection, real trials with the support of love and family and friends. If you’ve read her other works, this is the family reunion you didn’t know you needed, but holding its own unique and wonderful story. Fall in love with shy, strong, protective guy Dax and learn the vulnerable side of Coaches daughter Blake—and how their love is getting them through hard times together. I don’t have the best words to describe it…but I love it!

Loved it!!

I was so happy to finally get Dax’s story! I loved getting into his mind and learning more about him. He is such an amazing brother and guardian to his 3 younger sisters. I would love to see his sisters have their own stories in the future. Blake went through a lot but she remained strong. I loved their connection and their love for video games. I adore the family that the Kings have made and love how they support each other. I really enjoyed this series and all the wonderful characters!

Loved this series

Let me wipe my tears, for both sadness and happiness. Absolutely loved this story! The love story between Blake and Dax (along with their family and friends) was soooo touching. I started with the first group of rock family and friends, now the baseball family and friends... and next will be Noah! Oh, Mason afterwards. So great. Blake and Dax's story has fears, tears, health issues, a really really bad guy, intrigue and sadness. My number one book of the week. Written by Cindy :)

It was nice I really like the fact that Blake and Dex were falling in loving in the online game and outside world as well and getting so confused about their feelings.
Although I would say to read the series from the starting coz there are so many characters specially from the baseball team and their wives and kids that it gets a little confusing but otherwise it's alright.
And this author writes books with zero smut and just cuddly-swoony scenes so if somebody gets uncomfortable reading sex scenes then they should definitely try her books.
Altogether it was a nice, small read.💙

Back to the Las Vegas Kings

I loved coming back to the world of the Las Vegas Kings (and to a lesser degree, Perfectly Broken). Dax and Blake were great characters and I really enjoyed this story.

Trigger warning, past domestic abuse, trauma over the death of a parent, and a car accident.
Tackles tough topics in an easy to understand way.
I would rate this PG-13 for the tougher topics discussed and swoony kisses.

This might be my favourite of the series!!
I adored this trope before I knew it was a thing and above all the others I adored the way Emily wrote it in Blake and Dex’s story!!

There was banter and fluff and their chemistry was so freaking good!!!!
I love how protective he is over everyone he loves and how quickly he became protective over her when he realised his feelings, and how he showed it.

I was just in the mood for fluff and this was perfection in that aspect, I cannot complain.

Exactly what I was needing! Dax has been patiently awaiting his own happy ending, and Emily more than delivered. Like all of Emily’s couples, Dax and Blake have a story that is uniquely theirs. As they maneuver struggles together, their already beautiful relationship flourishes. This one will definitely be worth the read.

I received an ARC copy for an honest review.

I enjoyed this book, and this series and author are probably one of my fav for closed door romances. I think maybe it felt a little far fetched and time, and like the characters should have acted or responded differently, or at least taken more time during certain situations. Overall it was a sweet, fun, easy read and I enjoyed seeing all the characters from Emily’s other books throughout!

Spoiler alert

Do not read this if you do not want spoilers. First of all, I love baseball. The ending chapters made me cry. How can a fictional character forced to retire make you cry? I can’t stand to see this series end. To the author, please create another team. It’s a great read even when Dax pulls that stunt at Phil’s. I’m definitely up for more romance and baseball.

This book was the perfect ending to this series. I’ve been waiting for Dax’s story forever and loved everything about it. I also really loved that there was no 3rd act break up. With the history Blake and Dax had a third act breakup wouldn’t have made any sense. Can’t wait to read about Noah next!!

This series never fails to make me swoon more than I anticipated. The characters and writing always exceed my expectations. Dax and Blake share such a beautiful story about connection and support through the hard moments of life. They teach us what it means to be a safe space to land. They will also give you all the feels, so buckle up for a fabulous read 😍

This book has so many writing issues - the wrong spelling of words, incorrect usage of words, mixed use of past and present tense, typos, etc. - that normally would completely put me off reading it. BUT...the characters are amazing, the plot compelling, and the love story is so sweet and swoony, I couldn't help loving it.

Rating scale:

⭐️ I hated it and possibly wish I could give zero stars.

⭐️⭐️ I didn't hate it, but my time could have been better spent.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ I liked it, but there may have been specific elements that I found lacking.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I liked it a lot! A solid plot, great character development, and quality writing warrant this rating.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I loved it! This rating means that something about a book has captivated me enough to overlook any minor mistakes or inconsistencies because I am completely immersed in the story.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Pure perfection. A masterpiece. I will read these books time and again and will buy all the limited editions that I can find.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ As badly as this series needs to be sent back to editing, I am smitten with these characters! I'm enjoying these guys so much, and I can't wait for Mason's story!

Dax's nightmare

The wreck that changed his life in many ways. And the irony of the whole thing is incredible! It's such a great story! He's the best big brother, taking care of his younger sisters when their parents were killed. Im not giving any more details, just know that you'll regret it if you don't read it!

Hard to put this book down

Common sense would say that I need my sleep in order to function at work tomorrow. But every time I put the book aside to get some sleep, my brain would demand the rest of the story. Enjoyable to the very end.
