Walter Davis is young, handsome, intelligent, dynamic, personable and homeless. The product of a bi-racial marriage but abandoned by his father as a young child, he prides himself on three his drive to succeed, his fine clothes and never having been late for anything in his life. Walter is also homeless. The medical expenses that came with his mother's brief and unsuccessful battle against cancer have left him destitute. Still, ever the optimist, Walter believes that if he lives in his car for a few months, he will have the time he needs to find a good job in the business world and turn his life around. His situation gets more complicated when he finds himself attracted to a girl he meets at the mailing center where he keeps a post box. But trying to impress a girl when you have no fixed address proves difficult, and when he's caught in a lie, she shuns his company. Walter's struggles grow when his car is impounded and he can't afford to pay the fine. Only resilience, ingenuity and his drive to succeed can bring Walter back from the brink of despair.
Walter Davis has it tough, at only 20, he lost his mother to lung cancer and he is homeless. Living in his car, he attempts to get his dream job in finance, unfortunately, the job is fried on his first day. Walter knows he can get himself out his predicament, he just has to keep on going.
From what I gathered about Rapid Reads based on other reviews, these stories are short, but on point and likely used in classrooms for positive literature reinforcement. The Way It Works fits into that, with a short page count and a story that teaches about perseverance and positive outlook. Walter is likeable and not too angsty about how his situation came to be, which is a little unique. I like it enough for what it is.
Personal Response: I really liked this book because there always seemed to be something interesting going on. I also really liked how it touched on the topic of homeless people that really try hard to get jobs, and it's not always their fault that they are homeless. This was a great book for a shorter but great read.
Plot Summary: The Way it Works started out with the main character Walter Davis losing his mother from having cancer, and not being able to afford the leftover bills and he then lost his home and was homeless looking for a job. He decides to just live in his car for a few months until he finds a job and is able to afford a house. Every day he goes to use the computer and check his mail at the post office, he finds himself becoming attracted to a woman who works at the post office, Yolanda. He eventually finds the courage to ask her out on a date and she says yes, they start dating but it gets harder and harder every date that they go on because he has troubles being able to afford it. He had to stand her up once because he just couldn't afford it and he didn't want to tell her that. He feels horrible and sad because she won't even look at him anymore because she feels hurt. Walter comes up with his own idea to become a courier and starts to make more money and feels confident to approach Yolanda again. She barely accepts his apology and they both decide to run this new business and get more employees. Their business was going great and they, later on, decided to get married in the same place they had their first date.
Characterization: In the beginning of the book, Walter was a very shy and quiet person that was not confident at all whatsoever. As the book went on his confidence level slowly kept raising, which was great because he was eventually able to start his own business. Yolanda was always confident in what she did throughout the whole book. Although she did get really hurt when she was stood up, she got over it when Walter explained why he couldn't afford it.
Recommendations: I would recommend this book to anyone that is homeless and needs some motivation to get somewhere and be somebody in the world. I would also recommend this book to the age range 13-18 because there really were not any parts where it was inappropriate or really harsh. I would also recommend this book to anyone that likes a book that isn't that long and keeps you wanting to read more.
it felt stupid getting so invested in such a short book, but i really started loving and caring for the characters. honestly i really liked this book :)
“i’d gladly pay ten times that for a date with this African-Chinese princess.” sorry..what?😭
Personal Response I personally enjoyed reading this book not only because it is something that can happen in the real world but because of the story in the book. This book is a pretty good book in my opinion. I like how the main character started off with not that much money then moved his way up into getting a nice house and even getting married. I wish the book was longer because it was a pretty short book in my opinion. But overall a pretty good book. Plot Summary This book talked about a man named Walter Jones who was homeless because both his mom and dad died of a disease. He only had a car and some money to keep himself living. He slept in his car because he didn't have a job. Some time passes and he meets a woman named Yolanda and he soon falls in love with her. He then asks her on a date and the girl says yes. He doesn't want to tell the girl is homeless because he's scared that she will leave him. A while passes and the girl knows that he is homeless. The girl doesn't leave Walter because she wants to be with him. The girl helps Walter get a job and Walter is pretty happy. Walter then ended up getting married and having a pretty good life. Recommendation I would recommend this book to 9-12th graders because this is a book they might enjoy. They might enjoy this book because this talks about the real world and this could let them understand things that actually happen. This book is a good book to read and I think 9-12th graders should give it a shot.
Walter Davis a young black man. In search desperately for a job has to live in his own car with no help from anyone. He has no mother because of cancer, and his father at a young age had left the family. Walter has no job, no family just his suit and a few hundred dollar bills. After applying to a few jobs, Walter heads to the post office to check his email and his mail. He steps up to the front counter and sees the most beautiful women he has ever seen. Walter tries to impress this girl, she does not know he is poor at least at the beginning she doesn't know. After a date Walter paid for he then invites her for another date with no money. Walter accidentally got towed and could not make it to the date. Walter is worried more about getting a job as of right now. He soon finds a job delivering a package and with that is enough to get his car back. He heads back to the guy in need of delivery and decides after that to make his own delivering business, he rounds up the poor and they decide to help him. Walter apologizes to the girl and continue to go out. Eventually they get married and live their life happy.
I picked this Rapid Reads book up at the library yesterday because it looked like just that -- an interesting rapid read.
It met my expectation delightfully. An easy read, I enjoyed following the fate of Walter Davis as he pulls himself up by his boot straps. He's faced some hard times and is living out of his car while he pounds the pavement to find a job.
On the way he's knocked over by several other disappointments. But, he refuses to give up even when the hope that's always carried him abandons him for a while.
I enjoyed the characters, the happy ending, the (slight) love story, and most of all the theme: the universe rises to meet those who know what they want and are willing to fight for it.
This book was about haw a young, handsome 22 year old black man lives his life being homeless. After his mother does, he has no other choice but to sell all of her belongings and live in his non-fancy car. He meets the love of his dreams and from then on it is hope bringing him on the rest of his journey. I liked it. In the beginning it kind of dragged but at the end it got really good! I prefer this book to anybody that doesn't like reading that much but wants to read a really good book!
I recommend this book to anyone of all ages! Its about a poor guy who tries to survive living his life in the city without his mom because she dies. I'm in love with this book I could read it all over again.
The Way It Works Most North Americans are only a paycheck from homelessness. Can you imagine how it would feel to be homeless? In William Kowalski’s book, The Way it Works, the main character, Walter Davis, is a twenty-year-old, biracial, homeless man. Kowalski’s works have been on bestseller lists around the world. The Way it Works is one of Kowalski’s Rapid Reads, which are shorter books for adults with literacy challenges (or only a few hours to commit toward reading). It addresses the issues of poverty, social injustice, and greed and dishonesty; topics that are geared towards young adults and adults, but in a format that is simple and straightforward to read. Walter Davis is a persevering character who succeeds because of his ingenuity and goodness. Walter Davis’ father left while Walter was an infant and his mother recently passed from cancer. For money, Walter sells his mother’s furniture and lives out of his car. Although homeless, Walter attacks everyday to the fullest, looking hard to find a job in business administration for which he has a degree. Walter daily checks his mailbox at the postal center for possible job interviews. While there, he finds one of the young postal workers, Yolanda, who is part black and part Chinese, to be absolutely stunning. He eventually digs up the courage to ask Yolanda out. To impress, he picks a Chinese restaurant and addresses her family in Chinese, “Ni hao ma?” Yet Walter lies about where he lives. After the date, Walter’s life became a series of ups and downs. His car gets impounded; his money stolen; he lands a job that turns out to be a Ponzi scheme and he ends up living in a shelter. Without having the courage to tell Yolanda the truth, Walter stands her up. To get his car back, Walter works out a deal to deliver a package for the car impound owner and eventually establishes a professional courier business. Eventually, Walter comes clean with Yolanda and they reunite. Throughout the story, you feel for Walter as he struggles to survive. The Way it Works, communicates the social injustice that Walter endures and, through ingenuity and endurance, conquers. I specifically liked how the author made me feel so hopeful for Walter and realize how it must feel to be in his shoes. How easily homelessness could happen to anyone, and what a dramatic effect it has on their lives. It makes me wonder if I talk to people that are homeless and I just don’t realize it. The Way it Works is not complicated, but it skillfully delivered an engaging story and character in Walter, with an uplifting message and a touch of romance. Some may feel its first person narrative offers few characters with little description and a predictable plot. Others will find this refreshing. I would recommend this book for those adults who have little time to read and, more specifically, to those young adults and adults with literacy issues that would like to enjoy a book with a more in depth topic than what is brought in children’s books. It is engaging and brings up current social issues in a manner that is easy to read. It’s message is uplifting: to always do your best and to never give up.
This uplifting novella is incredibly impressive, spiritually emotional, and overwhelmingly captivating. Mr. Kowalski displayed his extraordinary talent in a positive and influential manner to connect with his readers.
I, wholeheartedly, am extremely impressed with Walter Davis' innovative strengths, resilience, and shocking determination to honor his decease Mom, his unconditionally loving and sympathetic community, and his amazing girlfriend, Yolanda.
I felt truly blessed for reading this book and grateful, generously, and proudly recommend it. ❤️ 💖 💓 💗 💕 ♥️
Good day all is well please this is i faith a great book through lore there are no garanties accept nothing is impossible and everything is possible thanks so much god bless really have it good.
Twenty-two-year-old (ish) Walter Davis lost his mother to cancer and most of what he owned to her medical expenses. Now he has a suit, a change of clothes, a car, and a few hundred dollars. He is dedicated to his job search, but can’t catch a break. Then he meets Yolanda, which complicates things. He can’t admit that he’s homeless, and he’s running through his little bit of money in an attempt to act like a normal guy. He needs to get back on his feet before things get out of hand.
Part of the Rapid Read series, this book offers a high-interest story to older struggling readers. My struggling high schoolers love this one. It is simple--a couple of main characters, a couple of main conflicts, and a resolution. It's definitely great practice for them.
For a strong adult or teenage reader, the story might come off as flat. There is little character development, the sentences are short and have a choppy feel (because of the low reading level), and the straightforward problem-solution structure will leave them wanting more.
There's a strong theme of taking charge of one's own life, and Walter is admirable in his dedication to be better. His story shows a view of homelessness that most people don't get to see. Homeless panhandlers are visible, but homeless people like Walter are blending in, and his situation could be eye-opening to a reader. My biggest qualm with the story is that the resolution to his problem was overly simplistic.
This is a clean read--no language, sex, violence, or drug/alcohol use.
In the book “The Way it Works” by William Kolwaski, Davis is a young man that struggles a lot after his mother’s death. Davis mother dies because she has cancer. Before Davis Mother died they had a perfect life with her having a good job and Davis being able to graduate high school and get his associates degree. His mom had given him a suit and a brief case so that when he went to a job interview he gave his best image. When Davis mom died Davis didn’t have anything or anyone to go with, and he got kicked out of his apartment. Davis met a girl and after a couple days of seeing her he arranged a date with her. Even though Davis had a few money left he took the girl to a nice restaurant to eat. Davis didn’t tell the girl that he was homeless. Weeks later he invited the girl to dinner again the problem was that he slept i9n his car and it got towed and he couldn’t go to the date he had arranged with the girl. Davis couldn’t live being mad at the girl so he went to talk to her. Before Davis had gone to talk to the girl he started a business of a carrier. That business started to grow and he had many employees. Finally he decided to tell the girl to marry him and they got married and after that he had a good living.
In the book “The Way it Works” by William Kowaski, Davis is a young man that struggles in his life after his mother deaths. His mother died from cancer. They had a perfect life he graduated from high school and got his associates degree. His mom had gave him a suit case and a brief case to start his own business. When his mom died he didn't have anything else. He couldn't pay the apartment rent he was kicked out of his apartment. He met a girl and arranged a date. Davis had few money but still went to eat dinner. He didn't even think about that. He didn't tell the girl he was homeless. After a couple of weeks he invited the girl again. The problem was he slept in in his car and they towed his car and he couldn't get there. He went to see her and they fixed there problems. Then after a while they got married and they continued the business that Davis had begun. The business was as a carrier. They had many employees. Davis life changed a lot. It started really bad with many difficulties but at the end it had a really happy ending.
The way it works. The way it works. My favorite book so far. The book is about a guy who has it all. The looks, the brains, and the dedication. He lived with his mom, had a nice home and was looking for a job. But, it all turned on him. His mom died and he became homeless. He kept everything in his car. One day he went to the postal office and met a nice Chinese lady: he fell in love with her. He had a date with her and was a success. Then he lost everything. He had to sell all of his belongings to keep himself alive. He got his car towed and no job. He also lost the girl of his dreams, he asked her for a second date she said “yes”. But, What Walter did not notice was that his car was towed. Therefore, he had to ditch her. The only thing he had left was his fancy suit his mom gave him to find a job. How can he get on top of his life by getting a god job, a good home, and get back the girl of his dream? With only his fancy suit? To me the book showed me how a man with everything, became the man with everything.
After his mom dies of cancer Walter Davis is homeless and living in his car. He just graduated from community college with a degree in business but he is still jobless. He is handsome and ambitious and he scores a date with the pretty Yolanda at the post office where he picks up his mail and uses the computers. After a very successful date, Walter’s car is towed and his situation goes from bad to worse when he loses his cash and can’t get his car back. He is too embarrassed to tell his troubles to Yolanda and stands her up for their second date. Since he is smart and ambitious, he is not down for long and the book has a happy ending. Even though it is filled with life lessons about the causes of homelessness, strength, and ingenuity, it is not heavy handed. This “rapid read” is meant for reluctant readers but might only appeal to girls because there is little action. Positive reviews Booklist and SLJ.
Loved this book it was amazing!! It was short read and I read it in a day!! This book had me hooked from the start.
Small summary (may contain small spoilers‼️) This book was about a young black men named Walter who’s homeless and struggles to make money. He looks for jobs everywhere and doesn’t give up until he’s got a job. (I loved how Walter didn’t give up to earn money even as a homeless man.) He meets a young lady named Yolanda who he finds beautiful but she’s doesn’t know about the real him. He struggles to tell her about the real him because he’s embarrassed. He takes her out once and plans to again for a second time but something occurs. This event changes the way Yolanda sees him. Who knows what will happen next?
SPOILERS‼️
He worked so hard and I’m happy that he got his happy ending :)
(I also notice that the cover of the book is related to the date with Yolanda)

I mainly enjoyed this book because of its brevity. I started and finished it today while sitting in a coffee shop over lunch. It's not perfect. For instance, the dialog is often forced and feels "written" rather than transcribed and I found myself wanting to act as an editor and tune the dialog to play well by ear, add a few funny one-liners, etc. Like when Yolanda asks Walter, "Your mom is white?" I thought this would have been a funny interaction in the vein of The Office, Saxondale, etc. style of dry humor: Walter answered, "She use to be." Yolanda, giggling, asked, "Did she get a tan?" "No, she passed away actually." "Oh. Sorry." "Yeah, me too." I realize that probably wouldn't work for most people. But I would have laughed the turkey out of my bagel sandwich.
