This volume was all about the beginning of Habaek and Nakbin's love story, and because I don't care for Nakbin at all, reading this was actual torture for me.

I'm a point where this series is still good. But it's just that. Good enough. I'm enjoying it as I read it, but I don't really think about it otherwise. The flow seems to have improved a bit, but not by much. There's still some confusing time jumping. It doesn't help that no one in this story seems to age and those that do look a lot alike.

This series does get a bit confusing with all the flashbacks.

Face palm. Really? REALLY? I call bullshit.

We find out that Habaek actually fancied himself a lecherous Casanova who hit on teenaged girls because they ‘amused’ him and that Nabkin had a thing for superficial pick up lines; ‘there’s no way a beautiful god like you could be an evil god.’ In other news we see how Nakbin actually became the bride of the water god. As expected, the ‘tale’ of their love is contrived and superfluous. Habaek actually fell in INSTAlove with Nakbin. The whole sordid affair was sorry and unfortunate.

Apparently, there’s this huge civil war of gods brewing and everyone has to take a stand and Habaek’s all chill going; ‘imma get married to this beautiful chick.’ Instead of being proactive and cunning and clever, he’s lazy and disrespectful, listless and snobby. Your regular douche canoe who thinks he’s a gift to humanity. Hello, Lazybones Manwhore; now falling in love is as easy as drinking water.

On the flip side Mura went nuts and sided with the emperor—who’s so obviously drenched in the foul scent of villainy the manhwa’s reeking with it. Hello, author? Babe, at least give him a REASON. Also, his speech bubble kinda gives me the slimy feel that only Orochimaru from Naruto has ever achieved. Kudos for that.

We get to see how hu-ye got trapped into this literal ‘godly’ mess. Which was literally the only semi-awesome thing in this entire manhwa.

Shameless objectifying throughout the story. I wanted a fierce Mulan and instead I got a weak willed aurora. Unrealistic fashion choices; I mean who let women wear low cut, off the shoulder styish hanfo in ancient mortal china? Therefore unauthentic.

Turns out that stupidity of Soah for not figuring out that her husband and her other lover ("his husband's cousin") is actually the same person is be a major dilemma in the plot of this manga.

Here is a short review of my first reaction to that

I definitely want to push her on some cliff for being naive and do fucking nothing.

And does Habaek/Mui even feel somehow betrayed knowing that his wife is ready to go with another man even if that other man is his "alter ego"?

Mui/Habaek: Nakbin. Nakbin. Nakbin.

Well. F*ck Nakbin. Well she's dead thousands of years ago people!

I would probably give the volumes in this series 3 stars if it weren't for the lush/gorgeous art. The story tends to have so much going on that I have trouble keeping track of all of the "political intrigue" in the world of the gods...so much so that I even lose sight of our main human character, Soah. But, I still keep getting drawn back into the world Mi-Kyung Yun creates...

Don't you worry... nothing's changed. He's still my enemy. — Huye

Family in this manhwa is confusing. No spoilers. But I don't think that little revelation was signposted. This volume deals a lot with the backgrounds and histories of the characters. We meet a young woman called Mok Rang who was a shaman generation before. Wang Mo, the Emperor, trouble maker and shape-shifter who wants Habaek and all he processes, for reasons left unclear. And Cheon Hoop our first female warrior whose outfit gives away much about her. We also see a very different side of Seowangmo, Habaek's Mother.

Essentially it's a volume of history... or filler. Depending on your perspective. I reserve proper judgement on it until I see how the information Mi Kyung Yun included is used later. One firm downside: the timeline is messed up jumping between multiple points without any indication. One firm upside: we do get to see the Emperors' Palace for the first time.

When the past is explained in each chapter.. I was like,

♫I can see clearly now the rain is gone
I can see all obstacles in my way
Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind
It's gonna be a bright (bright)
Bright (bright) sunshiny day♫

Talk about Mood. LOL!

This volume revealed so much! We find out how Nakbin and Habaek's relationship began. We also get a glimpse of how far back the Emperor has been trying to get at Habaek, although we don't know why yet.

In this volume, I'm also beginning to feel sorry for Murah. On the one hand, she needs to grow a spine and get over her unrequited love, but on the other... well, we've all been there (not literally, but figuratively).

This manhwa gets more convoluted and confusing with each installment. Soah finds herself facing Mui who tells her the truth about himself. Only it’s not technically Mui and somehow she’s allowed two gods (?) into the palace, gods who can appear as other people. Oh, and the cold hard truth? I have no idea what happened. Does she faint? Does her brain break? Do they hurt her? All I know is she’s unconscious and becoming less and less a heroine to root for. Sigh.

This happens all in the first few pages. From there to the end, we’ve been catapulted back in time to when Habaek meets Nakbin. Interweaving here is Habaek and Nakbin’s storyline and another storyline with Habaek’s mother and other deities, one of whom wants her to give up her son. As for Nakbin, she’s a very young girl when she meets the water god and it turns out that she shouldn’t have been able to see him or dream her way into his realm but she can. Also Nakbin has a friend, Hyue (who should be familiar to the readers), a beautiful archer who does not like Habaek.

Habaek (who is in his adult form for all of this, possibly the curse doesn’t exist yet) has made a decision. He’s going to wait until Nakbin grows up so he can marry her. Either you’ll find this wildly romantic or vaguely creepy. For me it was the latter since there is not much reason for this decision (I’m not one for insta-love). Whether Habaek is granting Nakbin warnings of disaster or if it’s a side effect of what she is able to do, Nakbin grows into a prophetess.

Unfortunately the people grow to use her and are intolerant if she’s wrong. Nakbin wants to leave, Hyue does not and at the end things go wrong.

I still have one or more of these so I’ll continue on but it’s grabbing me less and less. Maybe it would be less confusing if people didn’t look so much like each other and the emperor didn’t take on other people’s faces.

I heart Huye. Heart, heart, heart. ^_^

Okay, now that that's out of the way...I was hopelessly confused in the last volume. Partially because it had been a while since I read volume 5, and partially because volume 6 is full of hard to follow transitions and impossibly convoluted scheming by various characters (or people who look like familiar characters, but aren't really those characters and are actually someone else in disguise). To borrow the words of another reviewer...it's a good thing the artwork is stupidly beautiful.

This volume was mostly flashbacks, but I love those. Especially in a series like this where everyone's motivations are so shadowy. It was good to learn some bits about the past. Particularly about Huye whose allegiance is ambiguous at best. Still don't understand this Emperor guy, though. But he's rather gorgeous, so I'll deal.

i can see why some find the story confusing - it's the result of (a) flashbacks that are not clearly flagged as such and (b) similar faces (that's what the flowing hairstyles are for, folks - telling characters apart). it also doesn't help that the emperor likes to turn up looking like other people, although if you read carefully you can identify where this happens. but having just reread vols 1-6, i can testify that the plot both makes sense and is going somewhere. and Bride of the Water God's other qualities haven't diminished in this vol - the achingly beautiful colour pages, the poetry, the delicately poised romance under threat. although i could wish Dark Horse hadn't indicated on the back cover that it's a tv series, because as far as i can tell, it ain't, and it's just cruel to us poor fangirls to suggest so. i think i'd cast Jang Geun Suk as Mui.

The flow of the plot is somewhat sharply cut off to show flashbacks explaining the relationship between Habaek and Nakbin. While all that is interesting and good to know finally, I was pretty sad that Soah's only appearance was to be kidnapped in the beginning of the volume. Also, it's pretty difficult to tell sometimes what scenes are supposed to be taking place in what timeframes. Fortunately Habaek's former appearance in adult form is different enough from his current appearance that it's a little easier to tell when he's in the flashbacks.

I didn't really enjoy this one....
I think it's because Soah didn't apear in this volume. She's teh ehad character and this volume is about Habaek's past; about Nakbin.
I dislike Nakbin so much. I can't explain why. She just ahs this thing about her. Also that she treatened Soa in the previous volume didn't give her much credit.
I was surprised that Huye and Nakbin are brother and sister, did I get that right?
Also that that peculiar God is their father!

I was so confused at first .-. And I didn't like learning about the past of Nakbin, but it did help me understand a lot though. I don't dislike her as much as I use to. I still really hate her imposter though. My rating isn't all that fair, because I had a headache as I was reading this. So ignore the two stars!
