The Gospel According to Crystal Justine by Tracey Michae’l Lewis is a fascinating journey through the life of Crystal Justine (CJ), a young woman who has, for most of her life, been erroneously compared to her mother, Sasha Renee. Even as she struggles to escape the image and legacy of this enigma of a woman, she finds herself unconsciously acting out her mother's (and grandmother's) past mistakes. Her relationships with men, although few and far between, is tainted by the thing she cannot say; and her faith is weakened by the emotional and spiritual blows she endures. This dynamic story of deliverance keeps readers, page by page, on the edge of their proverbial seats, wondering if CJ will simply succumb to the darkness that has chased her soul for as long as she could remember or if she will be the one to finally put an end to the generational curse that has tried to consume her family.
Crystal Justine is a young lady who lives a full life. Her life is filled with painful adjustments. Before any young girl should try to understand the forever loss of loved ones, she loses in death her mother, Sasha Germaine, her father and her grandmother. After the loss of his wife, Sasha's father never really regains his equilibrium. He lives daily with his grief while in the process Crystal is left to learn about life and deal with her problems without his help. Crystal's mother, Sasha, dies after Crystal Justine is born. Therefore, throughout her life Crystal's mother, Sasha, is like a shadow that is before and behind her. Her mother becomes a ghost in her life because of her father's inability to deal with his emotional pain.
While reading TRACEY MICHAE'L LEWIS' novel, INTERRUPTION: The Gospel According to CRYSTAL JUSTINE, I thought about Crystal's emotions about her mother. Dealing with grief can never be denied or pushed down into the subconscious with hope that it will just disappear. Grief seems to have a way of piling up and lifting itself from one person to the next person. It's like a heavy fog in a home where no one can breathe. Unfortunately, this is the legacy that Crystal Justine must live with everyday.
The ghost of her mother isn't her only struggle. Other horrible circumstances happen in Crystal's life. Her father's best friend is the cause of a major catastrophe in Crystal's life. Although Crystal goes through so much she clings to God. She never let's go or gives up. I found it surprising that such a young lady could keep going on each day while finding her own answers. Thankfully, one day she meets an older lady. She thinks of the older lady as an angel sent by God. She arrives just in the nick of time with the right answers needed by Crystal Justine. In the end Sasha addresses evil spirits who have always haunted her. Crystal Justine proves to be as hard as crystal. Crystal is defined in this way.
"To every demon in hell who has pursued me, my mother, my grandmother and all of the women before us, you should have took me out when you had the chance because from this day forward, I am...we are...free." rawsistaz
Urban Dictionary: crystal 1. crystal a rare beauty, who is extremly smart, and has a love for life! A beautiful person who wants to change the world and all that she meets in it!!! www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?...
"Interruption: The Gospel According to Crystal Justine" is the sequel to "The Gospel According to Sasha Renee." Unfortunately, I did not get the chance to read the first book in the "Gospel" trilogy. By no means did I miss anything too critical from reading the first book.
Crystal Justine 'aka' CJ is haunted by not knowing her mother Sasha. CJ's mother passed away shortly after giving birth to CJ. It irritates CJ that everyone in her family or friends of the family are always comparing her to her deceased mother. She feels somewhat responsible for her mother's death and longs to know more about the woman that gave birth to her. Underlying hurt prevents her from being able to open up or fully trust anyone. All of her relationships with men seem to fail. After being hurt or rejected in some form, she feels in a sense lost. When she was younger she used to believe God would always be there for her since she grew up in the church, but somewhere along the line she felt as though God had let her down as well. Will she be able to get her spirit right and find the God in herself before it is too late? Will she be able to recognize love when it comes her way? Why did CJ lose her trust in God?
"Interruption: The Gospel According to Crystal Justine" was a pretty good read. It tells the story of a woman who has been hurt, has trust issues and refuses to let anyone get to close to her. It shows how after being hurt, how much prayer really does work and how after giving God all your hurt and pain how things can change for the better. The story does kind of remind me of a memoir of sorts; it chronicles a young woman into adulthood. After reading this novel I would like to read Ms. Lewis' debut novel to find out more about this spiritual attack on these three generations of women in the "Gospel" trilogy.
Interruption: The Gospel According to Crystal Justine is a powerful and emotionally rich novel that explores themes of identity, faith, and resilience through the unforgettable voice of Crystal Justine. The story follows Crystal as she faces life’s interruptions - the unexpected moments, challenges, and losses that threaten to derail her path. But within those struggles, she begins to discover her own strength, healing, and purpose.
Tracey Michae’l Lewis-Giggetts writes with lyrical beauty and unflinching honesty, creating a story that feels both deeply personal and universally relatable. Crystal’s journey is raw and vulnerable, yet filled with grace and empowerment. I was especially moved by the way the narrative highlights faith, self-discovery, and the courage to rise even when life feels overwhelming.
This book is heartfelt, thought-provoking, and inspiring. It’s more than just a novel; it’s a testament to survival, healing, and the unbreakable spirit of a woman who refuses to be defined by her interruptions. This is my second book by Lewis-Giggetts, and it definitely won't be my last. An absolute must-read.
Thank you NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for the ALC in exchange for my honest review.
Crystal Justine what a powerful, young woman. She is suffering from a generational curse that previous women in her family have endured and suffered from as well. Crystal loses her mother when she is young and this pain is transform through other encounters in her life that left her in a detrimental status. Does she overcome this generational stance, she does. It is amazing to be plague with the feelings of what if this happens to me? Or I don’t want to be like this. Being compared to someone you have never known and have only heard of the negativity is hard when someone is your mother. The feelings of not being good enough is seemingly present in Crystal life.
Having read the first book in this trilogy which was about this character CJ’s mother Sasha I was grateful to be given the opportunity to review this second one.
I enjoyed this audiobook again without comparing to the first it was beautifully narrated and there was of course references to characters from the first book which interlinked really well.
As much as these characters were likeable, the plot line and story relatable and still interesting and as expressed it follows the line of three generations / three different books the first one just had something with a little more depth. With that being said I still can’t wait for the sequel!
CJ definitely had her fair share of life to get through her faith was tested she had to learn who she was where she really came from and try to understand her path. With various events that unfold she has many people that cross her path good and bad that help her to grow, inspire her and help her understand her background of her mother as well as how to let go of the past!
With thanks to NetGalley & Dreamscape Media for this ELC in return for an honest review. 🙏🏽📚❤️🎧
It’s hard to be your own person when you live in the shadows of others. Crystal Justine has experienced this her entire life except the shadow she fights to get away from is that of her deceased mother who died upon Crystal’s birth. This was a good story of a young woman fighting to find her identity while also wrestling with her faith. I enjoyed this story and would recommend it.
