So, in a distant future, sex, economics, and religion all get mashed together in the production of Skydolls. Sentient, fully-aware, female robots, used for pleasure and whatever other uses people can think of. Somehow this overlaps with the planet's religion, where virginal purity is championed -- however, using a Skydoll in the goddess image is somehow considered a sinless act.

Spaceship serves as a prequel to the main series, offering several short stories, each illustrated by a different artist.

TW - sexual abuse/rape/etc.

I spent the entire time trying to figure out if the series was endorsing, or condemning the sexual slavery it was depicting. Certainly some stories put it in a negative light, even going so far as to show the trauma of a girl/doll that gets brutally gang-raped. But in another story, the commentary notes how horny the artist got while planning the stories/costume designs. As well, the first story has a pleasure-model, eager to start her new life with her masters. It makes sense in context for her to be programmed with the willingness to serve their owners, but morally speaking, such an idea is horrifying.

And the light-hearted tone is often disturbing too, where it depicts a group of prostitutes trying to use voodoo to punish their Madame, and their disdain/disgust towards their customers. In general, I find the tone vs the subject matter to be fairly off-putting. Why tackle such subjects, if you're going to treat them so lightly/in a fetishized way?

The commentary on religion/mass-market culture is fairly 'blink and you'll miss it', where you'll only really notice it if you go back and squint.

As noted above, the religion dictates that women should be pure, so men should use Skydolls instead. Yet virgin Skydolls are also prized, especially if that means men can then take it away from them. Which is either shows the hypocrisy inherent in the system, or... See, it's hard to tell what that is supposed to say.

The book usually seems to favor style over substance; of course the art is gorgeous, even if the anatomy is sometimes a bit, uh, oddly cartoony. I liked the art best when it had clean lines and bright colours.

Even if I found much of it off-putting, after reading, I still set out to find the series proper, to see if that will offer anymore substance or clarity. So I guess the book did succeed in that way. I'd really like to see them do more with the programming of the Skydolls, if they really do posses free will, and to what extent.

This is two different anthologies with six stories each. Each has a few "making of" pages.

"Spaceship Collection" are stories of the main character that occur outside of the regular series. The stories and the art are pretty weak as an average but there's some quality in two to three of them.
->The writers and artists come from Italy and France.

"Lacrima Christi" are stories about the "holy" women in the series. They are mildly to very erotic and much better as a team than the previous six offerings. Especially the art. Three of them have the rare ability to draw small breasts and do so ->perfectly<-.
->The writers and artists come from Italy, France, Spain, Serbia and... CHINA. My first China?

This was mostly an art gallery display in the vivid world of Sky Doll, although it is a step up from the original comics. This collection had some typesetting problems though, as did the original. Certain words would not break properly in speech bubbles. Also, why is Ludovica called Ludovic throughout the comics despite being known previously as Ludovica in the original comics and on the back cover synopsis?

Anyway, as I said this is a step up from Decade.

Spaceship
The stories had some mostly great art. Bang Bang was the weakest in this regard because sometimes there was little detail and I could not tell what was going on. La Bambola and Smoke on the Water were tied for the strongest because of their wonderful usage of colors and Noa's expressions. Overall, Spaceship gives a glimpse into Noa's life and it is an okay presentation in general. Lacrima Christi is clearly stronger in storytelling. Like A Virgin is the strongest story in the Spaceship Collection as it details how women are treated in Papathea under Ludovica's regime in contrast to the Sky Dolls in addition to revealing the true feelings of the clergy towards Ludovica. Additionally interesting, Like A Virgin also reveals how blase Noa is to the various sexual desires in the world. La Bambola follows second in story because of how it shows both Noa's guilt and her desire to get free.

Lacrima Christi
The strongest in both story and art, Lacrima Christi gives a glimpse into the lives and past of Ludovica and Agape. It's really hard to pick the best in art of Lacrima Christi, but personally I'd go with In the Mirror, though The Saint in a bottle's colors should not be glossed over. Blood-Red Shoes has the best writing due to its combination of religious symbolism and the gritty reveal of the violent social turmoil caused by blind devotion to Ludovica and her suppression of Agape's cult. In the Mirror and White Cinderella are tied for second due to the reveals about Ludovica and Agape and the clergy's involvement in both. Lacrima Christi makes up for what Spaceship lacks.

As I said, this is a step up. But it could be better.

Fantastic artwork; written by Barbucci and Canepa but mostly illustrated by guest artists. Huge kudos to Marvel for bringing these European comics to the American market and giving jaded and bitter readers like me a fresh alternative to the tired superhero genre.

The first half, "Spaceship," is comprised of six short stories about exciting episodes in the otherwise mundane lives of different "sky dolls" and was thoroughly entertaining. The second half, "Lacrima Christi," was a bit more tedious and often confusing and explored (generally one-sided) aspects of religion (particularly corruption of the clergy) and sexuality.

This book contains graphic sexuality, controversial views on organized religion, and occasional violence. Sensitive readers will want to pass.

Some of the stories were good, some not. Same goes for the art. That's the danger one faces with anthologies like this.
I have to admit I'd forgotten a lot of details since my last read of the series, so guess I should give it a reread at some point.

The first half was... Eh.
The second was way better, plus it was nice seeing the original artist make a short comic on Ludovica. :)
Not sure if I would recommend it. The first shorts about Noa were... Really... Mostly a miss for me. The Papesses ones were more hits, although one was so cruel, I felt like throwing up. Still great artwork, but...
I dont know. Something doesnt feel right. I cant bring myself to give it more than 2 stars, for some reason.

Sexy definetly, colorfull and funny for sure, but with a resonance on religion and politic definitly.
Skydoll is comicbooks which is more deep that it looks like, even it is a bit too much messy on my eyes.
Anyway i highly recommend this italian commicbooks for the quality of the drawing or the scenario.

Loved this comic, this collection consists of short stories within the sky doll universe by many different artists. The themes in this collection are pretty grim though so it's definitely aimed at an older audience.

Various art styles and intriguing plot lines contribute to an interesting comic. Some scenes I found to be in poor taste and some artwork was simply not satisfying. Overall, it makes me interested to check out the original Sky Doll comic.

Some very bizarre and somewhat erotic art wrapped with very short stories. A bit rapey and sexist in spots. This book uses a number of artists so the style varies wildly, some of it is quite good. As for what the background was, I had to read Wikipedia for that information.
