Steven Connors came to the Evan’s Estate at the age of six. He was the son of the housekeeper, and he and Darren Evan grew up together, like brothers. But time was against them, and as they matured, their love for one another changed into something else. Steven knew that he and Darren could never be together. But then Steven makes the ultimate sacrifice and they are separated for years, only to be brought back together again under very different circumstances. Can the hurts and scars of the past ever heal?
I write not only for my own pleasure, but for the pleasure of my readers. I can’t remember a time in my life when I haven’t written and told stories. When I’m not writing, I’m dreaming about writing, doing something wild and adventurous, or trying to make the world a better and more open minded place to live in. I adore beautiful men, and I know I’m not alone in this! Eroticism between consenting adults, in all its many forms is the icing on the cake of life!
Very emotional romance that begins as summer love between the housekeeper's son and the millionaire mogul's heir. It will pull your heart-strings. In a good way.
It would've gotten five stars, except for a couple niggling points: 2/3 of the way through the story, the POV switches from one lead to the other. And it only stays that way for perhaps two or three scenes, then switches back for the remainder of the book. I could have done without that, entirely. The story would've lost nothing if that section had been cut, and losing it would contribute greatly to continuity and flow. Another niggling detail was the careless flux of tenses; switching back and forth for flashbacks is all fine and dandy, but as a writer you have to make damned sure that you edit the hell out of it and make certain it switches back when it should. Smoothly, so as not to jolt the reader out of the story entirely. For the most part, Manly succeeds beautifully at this, but the few flaws I noticed weren't ones I could easily forgive.
I really feel bipolar about this one. It's a deeply emotional story and I really liked that.
What really bugs me are the main characters. At first, I really sympathized for Steven. But as the story unfolded and understood what has transpired up to his present life, I ended up thinking he was pathetic. Speaking of pathetic, the other protagonist, Darren, was even more so. He didn't seem genuine, but rather more like a user. He's a coward and a weakling. I just couldn't reconcile how Steven could still be in love with him after all that has happened all these years.
A minor issue I have is the POV shifting. As I was reading, suddenly it was from the other protagonist's pov, then later back to the other. There should be some sort of cue for the readers when a shift in POV is gonna take place. Otherwise, we get confused and it breaks the flow as well.
The story was appealing and had potential, but the characters just didn't cut it for me.
This book has some good reviews so I kinda feel bad giving it only 3 stars but I just couldn't seem to connect to either one of the main characters - they just didn't do anything for me and that's a must when I read something. It wasn't that the story was bad or anything, maybe if it had been longer I would have gotten more into it.
4,5 STARS!!! I LIKE THIS STORY DISPITE THE TOO SHORT STORY I THINK..AND IM CRAVE FOR MORE ABOUT DARREN AND STEVIE..AND I BELIEVE THIS BOOK WOULD BE GREATER IF THERE'RE MORE ABOUT THE COUPLE..
