Rep: Mostly Black characters. The MC, her LI, her friend and several others are Black. Her friend is half Haitian/ half Irish-American.

This was cute and silly! If you want to read about a teen getting into hijinks all for a crush, then this is good! It has a model competition as it’s plot, and it’s not high angst at all in case you’d rather read something stress free.

Perfect Shot was written by Debbie Rigaud. The theme of this novel is courage. The courage the main character shows gives her the strength to retry for a dream that she had in her past. Without her courage she would never have experienced all that occurs in the book.
London Abrams is the main character. London used to be a pageant girl. Her parents put her in all of the beauty pageants when she was little. Now, she has given up on modeling. London has found a new love, volleyball. London is the usual athletic, tall high school girl. London loves a good competition. Pam is London's best friend. Pam is a very supportive and honest teenager. Pam has a good life. She is very worry free. Kelly is London's pageant arch enemy. Kelly is tricky and sly. She knows how to get what she wants. Kelly is very mean. Rick is London's ex-boyfriend. He was evil to her, so now she hates him, but he still likes her. Brent is the photography intern working at the modeling contest. Brent is nice and funny. Cynthea Bay is the woman holding the modeling competition. Cynthea is very professional. She does not like you to be late. Jake is Pam's long time perfect boyfriend. London's mother is very uncooperative and childish. London's mom loved her, but only when she did pageants. London's mom would not support her in her volleyball hobby. Didier is one of the judges. He always seems to be very comically over dressed and over enthusiastic.
London has always been the tall model girl. Now with her new love, volleyball, she feels so much happier. London really wants to go to a volleyball camp this next summer and her parents decide she is not ready this year, and she should wait till next year. London is determined to go so her parents say if she can make the money she can go to the camp, so London gets a job. One day while at work she sees a guy who she, in her just broke up brain, falls for immediately. She does all she can to get to know him. This is including signing up for a modeling contest she had no idea she would get past the first part. London has to get to know Brent, and now her competitive edge kicks in when she finds out her childhood pageant rival, Kelly, is trying out also.
This was a good book. It is a very cute little romantic comedy. London is a very cool role model who uses her true God given talents to impress the judges at a contest that she knows she is not perfect for. Her confidence really is empowering. I would definitely recommend this book.

I grabbed this little paperback as a starter book to get back into reading. It was a cute light romance that was unique in that it features a black girl working toward embracing her natural beauty. It was a very easy read and was entertaining for the most part.
There were a few cringey moments where the author would use very odd or outdated slang that just didn’t really work. Also it could get a TAD cheesy. But With that being said, I enjoyed the read.

Summary: London loves volleyball but she takes the opportunity to sign up for a modeling contest in order to spend more time with hottie Brent. While her first goal is to win his heart, the cash prize would be helpful for the volleyball camp she wants to attend.
Why I Read: Simon Pulse Romantic Comedy! How could I *not* read this?
My Thoughts: I really liked London; she had a good head on her shoulders, very determined but able to have fun as well. I liked her instant crush on Brent and her struggles to feel like a girly-girl who could model. I liked reading a book about a sporty girl because I feel like there aren't that many (Authors write what they know/what the audience wants and in large part that's nerdy, quiet girls, of which I am one.) I did hate her for being super tall because I have always wanted to be tall (5'10'' was the goal) and I'm super jealous. I liked her friend Pam and her parents, who played minor roles.
One problem was the relatively low stakes. There was not as much of a conflict in this as there have been in other Simon Pulse books and I did expect something more dramatic. However what was there was satisfyingly handled.
Overall: 4 out of 5. Not my favorite Simon Pulse but worthwhile if you like the series.

The main character here was really well developed and I rooted her on the whole way. In this series the covers looked kind of like those on cheesy romance novels people often skip. I do that sometimes too and here I was really taken aback by the great characters that I wasn't expecting and an awesome plot. The guy wasn't a bad character but I didn't like him as much as the great main character that Debbie created. It had good writing and the determination of the character again drew me towards the book. Here is my review:

She sets on a road to self-discovery and love, along with her witty and a bit flirty best friend, Brent and an old frenemy Kelly.
I definitely recommend this book, not only because of the determination it encourages and the great character but also as a lesson that I think we need more of in our community. After all as London said, "Besides it's a known fact that if you don't care enough about what you're fighting for, you are less likely to win the battle." London

Perfect Shot by Debbie Rigaud part of Simon and Schuster's Romantic Comedy series of novels. London Abrams loves volley ball and wants nothing more than to attend a volley ball summer camp. It's unfortunately a bit pricey and her parents have said no. She's decided she'll do what it takes to earn the money herself — even if it means entering a local modeling contest!
Mixed into this equation is a cute boy, Brent St. John, who is an amateur photographer and part of the contest. Part of her inspiration to enter the contest is her crush on Brent.
The plot is a bit formulaic — more so than I found Animal Attraction by Jamie Ponti. The situation — working in a boutique / modeling is a bit of a cliché. As it's been done so many times, Perfect Shot has to work a lot harder to stand out.

I all around enjoyed this book, apart from one thing. The main character London talks like she's from the ghetto! Mad, Dawg, Gurl and the g got dropped constantly from words. African Americans don't really talk like that! My next door neighbors are African American and they don't talk like that, they're both college grads and talk in an educated manner. Other than that though, i enjoyed this book quite a bit. I liked seeing how London grew and changed over the course of the book. And the romance was really cute.

I had tried reading this book once before and could not get into it. When I started reading it this time, I stuck with it past the first two pages. The actual dialog can be a bit annoying just because of the way the author tried to make it sound like teenagers talking - I think Rigaud tried a little too hard with the dialog at points. Other than that, I really enjoyed the book.

January 7, 2016Perfect Shot was a such a cute read. It's fast-paced with a great cast of characters. Pam is a HDQ (Haitian Drama Queen) and she's hilarious! London (the main character) is carefully developed by the author. I liked how she went out of her comfort zone and her reactions were realistic, she was nervous but also determined to succeed.

Nice light romance. With teen African american charcacters. Would have loved this as a teen. Main character, London is a serious volleyball player. Great smart, athletic girl. Nice boy and mean boy. Great best friend relationship. Nice family dynamic too.

This cover and name is exactly like one of the sweet valley high books! anyways. ... this book was good although it did not live up to some of my expectations
