About the author

Paul Sussman (11 July 1966 – 31 May 2012) was educated at Merchant Taylors' School and St. John's College, Cambridge, where he won a Joseph Larmor Award and a boxing blue. His novels have been translated into 33 languages and are set mainly in Egypt, where he worked for many years as a field archaeologist, notably with the Amarna Royal Tombs Project in the Valley of the Kings. Among other finds, he unearthed the only items of pharaonic jewellery to have been excavated in the Valley since the discovery of Tutankhamun in 1922. As a journalist he was a long-time contributor to the The Big Issue, where he won a Periodical Publishers Association Columnist of the Year Award for his satirical "In the News" column. He has also written for, among others, The Independent, The Guardian, The Evening Standard, The Daily Telegraph, The Spectator, Cosmopolitan and CNN.com.

On 31st May 2012, Paul Sussman died suddenly from a ruptured aneurysm, leaving a wife and two sons.

“الأشخاص اليائسون يفعلون أشياء يائسة”

كالعادة مع بول سوسمان رحلة جديدة داخل مصر وتفاصيل رائعة تاريخية ومكانية لكل شبر نمر عليه اثناء الاحداث
هذه المرة لا يوجد صديقنا العزيز جدا من الاقصر يوسف خليفة على الرغم من ظهوره في مشهد صغير ولكن كان مميز جداا وافتقدته في الاحداث بشكل كبير



ابطالنا فلين برودي وفريا هانين من يواجهون الصعاب هذه المره بعد وفاة اليكس اخت فريا الكبرى في مصر تقرر البطلة ان تذهب لدفن اختها لتقابل اصدقاء اليكس من البدو والاجانب وتبدأ المغامرة
تتعرف على زاهر وعائلته واخيه سعيد لتلاقي منهم الجفاء فقط وتتعرف ايضا على مولي كيرنان
تربط فريا باختها اليكس علاقة سيئة من الماضي الأليم لتنفصل كل واحدة منهم لحياة مختلفة تماما .. تحترف فريا التسلق وتحترف اليكس استكشاف الآثار والصحراء لتذهب للحياة في الواحات في مصر وتربطها علاقة قوية مع ايجاد الواحة الخفية (زرزورة) الشهيرة والتي عانى الكثيرين في محاولات لإيجادها في احداث الرواية وايضا في الحقيقة

ايضا نقابل في ظروف شديدة القسوة رجل الأعمال جرجس الذي على استعداد لفعل كل ما يخطر ببال الشيطان حتى يجد المكسب له دائما لتصبح (زرزورة) هي حلمه الأبدي ليجدها بكل التكاليف الممكنة وبمساعادات كبيرة وخطط كثيرة من مراكز عليا
يحدث هذا بعد سقوط طائرة محملة بشحنة يورانيوم كبيرة ورغبة الجميع في ايجادها والاستيلاء عليها



كان يتملكني احساس كبير بالنوستالجيا في كثير من احداث الرواية والعودة لفيلم المومياء الشهير جدا من تسعينات القرن الماضي
لأدخل اجواء الفراعنة المحبب والملئ بالأسرار والأمكانيات التي تعدت كل العصور وكل التكنولوجيا

واحة لا يوجد داخلها سوى لعنات الحماية والحجر (بنبن) يجلس على عرشه في المنتصف يمتلك قوى خارقة يمكن لها ان تصبح اكثر قوى مدمرة في تاريخ البشرية
نجد انفسنا وسط العصابات والمخبارات الامريكية والاثنين سواء في تلك الاحداث
مجرد الكثير والكثير والكثير من الطمع والهوس وفقد الانسانية مقابل هدف واحد فقط لا غير

عيوب الرواية
لولا حبي الشديد وتعلقي بكتابات بول سوسمان في سلسلة يوسف خليفة الرائعة لكنت انسحبت من تلك القراءة قبل منتصف الرواية
فقد كان هناك تطويل في الاحداث والكثير من الكلام المبالغ فيه ومشاهد تطول وتطول لتتجه الي الملل فأفقد كل اهتمام واترك لتركها فترة حتى استجمع بعض الطاقة للاستمرار في هذا الملل الكثير
حتى صديقتي داليا نور الدين محبة التفاصيل لم تستطع تحمل تلك التفاصيل المبالغ فيها بشكل كبير 😂

ولكني اعود في نفس الوقت لحب اسلوبه في الكتابه واختياره لمشاهده الجذابة دائما ليجذبني مرة أخرى داخل الاحداث واندمج حتى يعود الملل ليسيطر على الاجواء مرة أخرى

ووووولكن
تأتي النهاية لتقلب التقييم رأسا على عقب فآخر فصل والذي هو عبارة عن ربع الكتاب كامل تقريبا ليقلب كل الموازين ويحول الملل الي سراب لاندمج بسرعة رهيبة في الاحداث مرة اخرى
من نهاية الجميع والبدايات الجديدة ومن يموت ومن يحيا وانتقام (بنبن) الشديد ليقفل صفحات الواحة مرة والى الأبد
لتصبح مرة اخرى مجرد امل بشري لايجادها مرة اخرى مع شبه استحالة هذا الآن بعد ما حدث

بول سوسمان يتألق كالعادة في وصف تاريخ مصر وشوارع مصر واهل مصر وطباع كل مصر .. اسلوب مميز كالعادة ملئ بالتفاصيل الممتعة على الرغم من الملل ولكن يبقى الاسلوب جذاب على اي حال
كانت تجربة ممتعة ايضا ومع آخر رواية اقرأها للمرة الأولى لبول سوسمان وآخر فرصة لمعايشة تلك التفاصيل الكثيرة العبقرية

الأسطورة، السياسة، المؤامرة، الجريمة، الصحراء..



پول سوسمان يقدم رواية في غاية التشويق، سريعة، ملتهبة مليئة بالأحداث والمغامرات والمفاجأت التي تحبس الأنفاس.. ينقلك الى الهلاك إلى قلب الصحراء المصرية حيث الأساطير والمعابد والواحات المدفونة في عمق الزمن ..


تبدأ الرواية بحدث غير متوقع وهو عملية نقل 50 كغم من اليورانيوم المخصب من أوروبا إلى السودان بطريقة سرية معقدة بواسطة طائرة تجارية، أثناء التحليق فوق الصحراء المصرية تهجم عاصفة على الطائرة وتسقطها في وسط الصحراء القاحلة.. لم يعد للطائرة أثر وتختفي في غياهب العدم ويموت جراء ذلك كل افراد الطاقم.. ويختفي اليورانيوم أيضاً


يستمر البحث عنها لمدة 23 سنة بشكل سري من قبل الأستخبارات وعملاء في داخل مصر للحيلولة دون وقوع شحنة اليورانيوم في أيدي إرهابيين أو عصابات إجرامية..


وعلى صعيد آخر يبحث مجموعة من المستكشفين وبناء على نصوص هيروغليفية مكتشفة عن واحة أسطورية خفية بناها المصريون منذ زمن سحيق ،والمنطقة التي يبحثون فيها هي نفس المنطقة التي سقطت فيها الطائرة المنكوبة..


ومن هنا تبدأ الأحداث بالتسارع والمفاجأت بالظهور لتكشف جانباً خفياً من تلك العملية الأستخباراتية والإستكشافية وكذلك تنجلي العلاقة والصدام بين الفريقين،، خيانات وقتل وخداع وجرائم شنيعة تحدث في سبيل البحث عن المجهول وكشف أسرار تلك الطائرة و الواحة الخفية نفسها..


وأنت تقرأ الرواية كأنك تشاهد فلماً ولا تشبه الرواية إطلاقاً، أحداثها وتفاصيلها وحتى نهايتها تلك التي تشبه نهاية الأفلام الهوليودية.. رواية بوليسية، تاريخية، أسطورية كل ذلك تحتويه هذه الرواية..

I expected to like this book, I tried to like this book, really I SHOULD have liked this book. Unfortunately, I didn't like this book. I pretty much knew by page 20 that I wasn't likely to like this book, but I really wanted to give it every opportunity to change my mind so I kept reading until page 80, but when I was still not liking it, I gave up.

I'm not even quite able to put my finger on exactly WHY I didn't like this book, because on the surface it has all kinds of things that normally add up to a good read for me. It's set in Egypt, a location I usually like, the main character is a strong, capable woman, there's the promise of a lot of thrilling plot twists, danger, mysteries and nasty bad guys. Like I said - I SHOULD have liked this book.

I think part of the problem is that there's a substantial amount of set up. There are clearly a large number of characters, so I guess that is necessary, but when I got to page 80 and almost nothing of import had yet happened, it made me wonder how much actual STORY there would be and how much of the nearly 500 pages in the total book I'd have to wade through to get to it.

There's also a bit too much extraneous description in this book for my tastes. I understand that, especially when a book is set in a foreign location, some explanation of pertinent details is necessary and even helpful to set a mood and get the reader into the story. However, I don't need to know what every kind of tree the character pass on a drive is, or that there are manure clumps on the road someone is walking along to a building, just give me what is necessary to put me there and then GET TO THE PLOT! I'm sure some people adore having tons of detail and getting every possible item's description and position, but I'm more about the story, so anything that keeps me from knowing what's going on is a distraction and an unwelcome irritant.

Bottom line: when I'm reading a book and find myself constantly drifting off and thinking about what I have to do tomorrow, or whether I should have chicken or fish for dinner, that book is NOT a keeper for me and it's time to take it back to the library and go on to the next one on my to-be-read list. So that's what I'm doing.

الواحة الخفية ...

غريب أن أقرأ لبول سوسمان دون أن يظهر المحقق الشهير يوسف خليفة ، فـ هو لا يظهر في هذه الرواية إلا مروراً عابراً في عدة صفحات ..

في الواحة الخفية : الأسطورة المعروفة بواحة زرزورة ..
وهي واحة غير مكتشفة ورد ذكرها في عدة أوراق بردي وكتب وبحث عنها كبار المسكتشفين ولم يتم العثور عليها حتى الآن ..

متسلقة الجبال فريا يتم طلبها على عجل لوفاة شقيقتها الكبرى مستكشفة الصحاري والبيئات الطبيعية الكس في مصر ،والشقيقتان لفترة من الزمن ربطتهما علاقة مضطربة..
تتقاطع قصتهما مع قصص أخرى وأكبر بكثير، سياسة وقوى كبرى همها الهيمنة على الدول ،و صراع أسلحة نووية ، وcia .

تبدأ القصة خلال الحرب العراقية - الإيرانية ، حينَ أرادت بعض الجهات داخل الحكومة الأمريكية بيع نظام صدام المواد اللازمة لصنع أسلحة نووية وذلك لتدمير طهران والإنتصار في الحرب ...
لكن الصفقة التي كان وسيطاً فيها رجل أعمال مصري ويعمل في كل الأعمال الغير مشروعة فشلت وسقطت الطائرة في مكان مجهول .. تلكَ كانت فقط البداية فقد بدأت رحلة بحث استمرت لأكثر من عقدين ، ليس فقط عن اليورانيوم الذي كانت تحمله الطائرة ولكن واحة زرزورة والسلاح الخفي الذي تم إخفاءه هناك في وقت ما قبل عدة آلاف من السنوات ..
سياسة وصحراء وآلهة فرعونية وخطط خفية .
في وسط هذه الفوضى تعلق فريا ، وبمساعدة صديق تحاول النجاة جاهدة ويكونَ هذا صعباً في وقت يختلط فيه الأعداء والأصدقاء .

في هذه الرواية أحببت فكرة الآثار المصممة لتدافع عن نفسها تجاه كل من يعتدي عليها أويحاول سرقتها والإستيلاء عليها .
فـ واحة زرزورة كانت مخفية بتعاويذ سحرية ومحمية بتصاميم ذكية ..
وفي زمن استبيح فيه كل شيء ، ابتداءً من دم الإنسان إلى تدمير الآثار والمدن التاريخية بلمح البصر ، تتمنى لو كانت هكذا آثار حقيقة فلا يستطيع معتدٍ الإقتراب منها ..
أفضل ما قرأت لـ بول سوسمان حتى الآن .

I loved this book. I bought it casually at a drugstore and I'm glad of it. I love Egypt, so i loved the setting, and I loved to hear of its history (fake and not).

I was captured by the research for Zerzura and very intrigued by the matter of dealing ancient artefacts and also how it all entertwined with contemporary history. I think it was a nice thing to add.
Also, the whole time I kept seeing it in my head as a movie, I could see characters, I could see things.

I got really attached to the characters and was rooting for them to make it.

Definitely worth the re-reading and even better the second time.
Almost forgot to mention how hmorous could be the dialogues at times.

Renumita alpinista Freya, pleaca in Egipt pentru a participa la inmormantarea surorii sale Alex Hannen. Ajunsa la Cairo ceva pare sa nu se lege privind sinuciderea lui Alex si este hotarata sa faca dreptate si sa scoata la iveala motivul pentru care banuieste ca a fost omorata sora ei.
Habar nu are in ce se baga, dar se trezeste intr-o cursa nebuna -in stilul lui Indiana Jones- plina de spioni, asasini, agenti guvernamentali si multa istorie, miza fiind descoperirea unui mister arheologic legendar.
Insotita in aventura ei de egiptologul Flin Brodie, va trece prin multe pericole in speranta aflarii adevarului.
Este un roman antrenant, interesant si relativ usor de parcurs, chiar daca la prima vedere volumul de pagini pare impresionant.

الواحة الخفية: حين يبتلع الرمل خطايا الإنسان

أيتها الصحراء، يا مسرح السر والسراب، ويا مهد الأساطير التي تنام تحت الرمال، قد آن الأوان أن نُصغي لصوتك عبر صفحات رواية “الواحة الخفية” لبول سوسمان. رواية لا تُقرأ، بل تُستشعر، كأنها أنفاس الريح تعبر فوق كثبان التاريخ، تُنقّب عن مدينة ضائعة بين الخرافة والواقع، بين لعنةٍ فرعونية ومؤامرات دولية، بين ماضٍ مدفون ومستقبل على شفير الانفجار.

الزمان والمكان: من صحراء مصر الممتدة كذاكرة الأبد، إلى لندن ومكاتب الاستخبارات، إلى قلب “زرزورة” ــ تلك الواحة التي طالما غلفها الغموض، نجد أنفسنا على تخوم عالمين: عالم أسطوري دفنته القرون، وآخر حديث تُسيّره تكنولوجيا القتل والطمع. تدور أحداث الرواية بين 2135 ق.م ـ حيث تُولد النبوءة ـ وصولاً إلى عام 1986 ـ حين تسقط طائرة تحمل شحنة البلوتونيوم ـ وانتهاءً بالحاضر المتوتر، حيث تتشابك خيوط الأسطورة بالواقع في رقصةٍ تراجيدية.

اللغة والأسلوب: بول سوسمان لا يكتب، بل ينقش فوق الحروف، يبني جملاً كأنها أحجياتٌ قديمة، مشبعة بالرمل والدم والدهشة. لغته نهرٌ مزدوج: يجري بماء التاريخ، لكنه يغور عميقًا في فجوات النفس البشرية. السرد مشبع بالتشويق، حتى أن القارئ يشعر أن كل صفحة هي قنبلة موقوتة ستنفجر حين تقلبها.

الشخصيات:
• فريا هانن: متسلقة الجبال، المكسورة بوفاة شقيقتها، تقف كأنثى تجرّ خلفها ذاكرةً متشققة وسؤالًا لا يكفّ عن التكرار: هل كانت الوفاة قضاءً أم مؤامرة؟ تسير كمن يحفر بظفره في صخرة، باحثةً عن اليقين.
• أليكس هانن: الغائبة الحاضرة، المغامِرة، والتي تتحوّل من شخصية ميتة إلى لغز يحرّك الأحداث كلّها. موتها هو صرخة الرواية الأولى، وصمتها هو صوتها الأبقى.
• فلين برودي: عالم الآثار الذي يعرف أكثر مما يقول، وتحمل عيونه ثقل الأسرار التي لم تُقل. هو المرشد في متاهة الزمان، لكنه ليس دائمًا بريئًا.
• جرجس والسي: رجل الأعمال الذي يمثل شيطان الرأسمالية، صورة لشرّ يبتسم ويُوقّع صفقاته فوق دماء الأبرياء. يقف كرمزٍ جليّ لانحدار الإنسانية حين تتاجر بالتاريخ.
• رجال الظلال: من عملاء CIA إلى مجرمي السوق السوداء، هم الجنود المجهولون للعولمة، أولئك الذين يُقاتلون لا من أجل فكرة، بل من أجل نفوذ.

الأحداث: كأنّنا في فيلمٍ متسارع المشاهد، تبدأ الرواية بطقوس كهنوتية فرعونية، ثم تنقلب إلى حادث طائرة مريب، ثم سباق محموم نحو زر زرورة، حيث يختبئ السرّ، وحيث يمكن لقوة قديمة أن تُغيّر موازين القوى العالمية. تتداخل فيها مطاردات، هروب في عمق الكثبان، مواجهات في كهوف التاريخ، اشتباك بين الحب والواجب، ونهايات تُشبه ارتطام الحلم بجدار الحقيقة.

ما بين السطور: الرواية لا تكتفي بسرد مغامرة، بل هي تساؤل فلسفي متخفٍّ: هل نحن ضحايا أساطير صنعناها بأيدينا؟ هل المعرفة قوة؟ أم لعنة؟ هل الماضي يُمكن دفنه؟ أم أنه دوامة تبتلعنا حين نُحاول الهروب منه؟

المشهدية والسينمائية: لا يمكنك كقارئ أن تتجاهل الطبيعة السينمائية للنص: مشاهد الطائرات المنكوبة، القوافل التي تعبر الصحراء، الأضرحة الغامضة، اللحظات التي يتحول فيها الجُبل إلى متاهة. كأن سوسمان يُخرج فيلما داخل كتاب، بكاميرا تتحرك بين طبقات الرمل وعروق الخيانة.

رؤية فنية خالصة: “الواحة الخفية” ليست رواية تقليدية. إنها حجر كُتب عليه تاريخ مصر، غُسل بعرق المغامرين، واشتعل بنار الطمع البشري. إنها صرخة داخل كل من آمن أن الأسطورة تُولد من حكاية، ثم تموت حين يُصدّقها الجميع.

There were points where I kind of shook my head and said, "that's a little lame", or something similar. But then I reminded myself that I was not in this for a deep, philosophical fulfillment or a cerebral mystery to unfold. No, I came into this book looking for a straight-up action story with an Indiana Jones feel. And for the most part, that's exactly what I got.

While some of the action is a little too cliche' (like escaping the bad guys by jumping out of a third-story window into a flatbed truck full of mattresses... yes, that really happened,) it still managed to keep the pulse racing along with no snore-pages that I can remember. And the last 100 pages contain several very unexpected twists and turns, especially with various character loyalties. For that reason, even a cliche' ending felt satisfying enough to warrant four stars and a recommendation to anyone who loved Indiana Jones.

جميلة و ممتعة .. لكنها مخيبة للآمال في نفس ذات الوقت .
مغامرة مثيرة بين القاهرة و واحة الداخلة للبحث عن الواحة الخفية أسفرت عن نهاية غير مرضية على الإطلاق

A good read. Even when the characters weren’t like-able they were rich (in detail) and interesting. In the end I grew to like them.

I particularly liked the author’s soft touch and eloquence in the “Good Bye” letter to Freya from Alex and around Alex’s Funeral.

The rest of this was what I call “sprint and drift” action/adventure. A chaotic flurry of action packed scenes that slow to a nice leisurely walk in places where he fills us in on back story, history and the personal touches. It’s well written, an easy listen (I did the audiobook) and one of those books that, as good as the narrator was (Sorry Mr. Gordon), I wished I had actually read it myself, rather than have it read to me.

I liked the author's sense of humor, though it sometimes seemed a bit out of sync with the ugly-mean villainy from the bad guys and the very somber feel of the book at its start. In some ways the story seemed to be schizophrenic or a have multiple personalities that couldn't decide amongst themselves what theme they should strike towards.

Over all, it was a wonderfully fun read (listen). I give it 4 stars. (Which is a lot of stars for me to give a book with this short of a review. Simply put, I liked it regardless of any faults I might also have with it.)

Warnings

1) There is a lot of foul language. As a Retired Sailor (US NAVY) it was tame by shipboard standards, but I’d likely want to take a swing at anyone talking like some of these guys around my children.

2) There is violence, not just shooting at people and suggested malevolence, the description of some pretty brutal interrogation through pain and torture scenes describe in enough detail to give you the eibie-jeebies. I wouldn’t call them gratuitous. They fit the books timing and the scene was handled appropriately for this type of book. I’d rate the individual scenes as a bit more brutal than average, but I also point out that there were not that many scenes to avoid and, they work with the story because they helped make the bad guys look bad, not sympathetic.

3) There are some stories of violence towards women and children in the story that are told as part of a history of one of the main villains (and associated supporting thuggery). These stories are told as history, related through another character not in a way the reader has to “experience it live” in the current story thread. They help paint the main Villain as a big, bad dude of the first order. I found the violent scenes manageable, but, they also pushed the envelope where gratuity-those things that are intended to generate extra-circular book buzz about a story- and character building are concerned. Yes, even Villains need their character’s built now and then…. And some of us Curmudgeons too.

4) This book is to Egyptologists what “Twister” (with Bill Paxton) was to Storm Chasers— maybe a weee bit over the top here and there. (It made up for it with interesting people and a fun, well written plot line that did keep you guessing now and then.)

6) Call me Kooky and take my biscuits. The ending of this book reminds me of the ending of an old Connery James Bond movie (Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend?) Where the weirdest two Thugs ever survive and go skipping off through the Nevada Desert looking for Daisies to press and stuff. (yea, they were weird) this book has an ending like that. It was fun, but.. really…those two?

Had fun reading this and using Google Earth to find and see locations in the Egyptian desert as I read about them in the story.

The book is 650 pages and all interesting. Of course the core story is fantasy, but a damned good one.

The story takes place in modern times after a flashback to the time of Saddam Hussein and arms trafficking. The main characters run about the northern half of Egypt and wind up going on a treasure hunt in the desert.

The novel contains interesting lore about Bedouins, about the garbage pickers (my words) of Cairo, and about doing archeology in Egypt.

A tale of murder, intrigue, lost maps, and ancient curses set in modern day Egypt with its seamy underbelly of drugs, trafficking and illicit money making. Mountain climber Freya Hannen, long estranged from her only sister Alex, learns of her sibling’s sudden death, and rushes to Egypt, guilt ridden and remorseful, arriving at the oasis of Dakhla to attend the funeral, only to find indications that the death was not due to natural causes. Her attempt to investigate turns lethal, and she has to flee for her life. As she turns to her only contact in Cairo, Egyptologist Professor Flin Brody for help, the deadly investigation picks up pace, and the pair tear from Cairo to Abydos and back, dodging pursuing vehicles, in a battered Cherokee, and finally take off across the Sahara in a microlight aircraft, in search of the lost oasis of Zerzura. A fast-paced thriller, which turns into fantasy, making it an interesting read, albeit a bit weird.

Although the writing was very descriptive, it was not powerful enough to make me feel like I was there. The plot was very weak, and the ending was science fiction, which was contrary to the story.

This book has been very weird for me .
I liked the story, the idea of looking for a Lost Oasis amid Zahara , persecution between "the good and bad guys", the deaths involved in the process, the geographical details, etc. .
In many areas, was quite predictable but it had other plot twists that I didn't expected so that completely surprised me. There were some things I didn't like :

1. Molly 's character was so cliché: The typical crazy religious who does everything to achieve an ideal, but it retains its extremist religious ideology to the point superimpose their beliefs on people.
2. Bad words: I hate when a book has bad words because it seems very vulgar, also it made ​​sexual references in some parts and I hated that.

What I liked was that there is no romance. I already expected the typical "and they kissed, hugged and stayed together forever" , but it wasn't, which I loved. As an extra touch, caught me off the end of the twins (what I wont say because I don't want to ruin anyone's reading).

In conclusion, this book has its virtues and defects equally but it's great to hang out and enjoy a little quick reading .

Pure entertainment value: 10 out of 10. Fast-paced adventure along the lines of Indiana Jones, this book was hard to put down. The characters are a bit too simplistic, with a bit too much baggage, but the pace of the book keeps you from dwelling on it. Some of the action scenes are very 'hollywood' (did they actually just drive into a fruit stall?), but they provide their own kind of humor as well. I found myself ahead of the book as far as the mystery was involved, and yet I was still surprised at the end. There was one major distraction: at least one typo or editing mistake on EACH page. Horribly messy and did affect the story at times. Perfect book for a vacation.

I was silly. Having read an excellent trilogy starring an Egyptian police officer by Paul Sussman I made the foolish mistake of thinking the rest of his works were as good. Not so. He obviously worked up to the standard of the trilogy. This book is written as if it is a film script but the reference in the story to Indiana Jones says it all, unfortunately. A poor shadow of that film.

Okay, picture this: The Mummy (1999), meets Indiana Jones, meets Tom Hiddleston in Kong Skull Island. That's it, thats the book-and it's AMAZING. After reading the Daughter of the God King, which I wasn't too impressed with, it was nice to FINALLY have a decent Egyptology adventure story. The story line was very well thought out and put together, the history was on point, and the character development was good and made sense throughout the story line. There's no real "substance" to this book, in a sense of no deeper meaning, no "her dress was blue because she was feeling sadness and remorse", in this book, the dress is just blue. It's an adventure story! It's meant to be fun and exciting and be a wild page turner! Not meant for your college campus English Class to take a part and figure out the hidden meaning behind Freya's dislike with bees. It's just an adventure story, take it as such and enjoy it. It's on of those books that you walk away from and have to shake your hair a little bit to get the sand out from the desert you were just running through, and feel your heart race a little to quicky sometimes as you're running along side Freya and Brodie while being chased by the twins. Enjoy the adventure, have a laugh or two and take part in something exciting. Isn't that why you started reading in the first place?

Wow! I did not look at this author or other reviews until after I had already written my review. I am utterly amazed at the accolades attached to this author. And if this book, as many attest to, is a good representative of the direction recreational reading is going nowadays, I am appalled.

The book started out okay and early on I became convinced this would be a true mystery set in a part of the world shrouded in ancient mysteries, but slowly agonizingly the story began to degenerate into meaningless and puerile dialogue backfilled with divergent and baffling actions and aside stories. The author has clearly done some research in Egyptology and the use of snippets of Arabic and old kingdom names was almost enough to lull the reader into a sense of absorption. But only almost.

The early detractor preventing absorption, and unfortunately a rather pervasive feature of contemporary literature, was the constant capering about from one POV to another regardless of the character’s bona fides or the usefulness to the development of the story. Such jumping around is invariably a warning indicator that the author has neither a compelling story to tell, a story worthy of the length of a book nor a story worthy of the readers full attention. Reader beware!

Aside from skimming over the biggest mystery of the story at a crucial moment the author prefers instead to meander off into irrelevancy. The over reliance on expletives to backfill dialogue in places where no dialog is expected or needed was dreadful. With every other word being a variant of the F__ word or the irritatingly valueless OMG entreaty, the shock value quickly dissipates and only serves to push the reader away. Makes one wonder where this author learned to write what they must mistakenly believe is compelling dialogue, particularly dialogue that would be apropos to what are supposedly educated people. The female lead was particularly discreditable as a woman, as a person early on built up as a daring and accomplished rock climber only later to reveal herself, at crucial and inconsistent times, as an over the top melodramatic adolescent, perhaps she is intentionally designed to set feminism a step backwards?

By the end, the story’s lack of cohesion, lack of resolution, feeble attempts at irrelevant shock dialog and shallow stereotypical character development were not enough to allow this reader to either recommend the book or this author, and it was certainly not deserving of one star. Too bad GoodReads does not allow for negative stars at least in this instance.

* كعادة بول سوسمان في سرده الروائي (ذات الطابع السينمائي) يتنقل بين أماكن وأزمنة مختلفة بغاية السلاسة والروعة إلا أن المميز في الواحة الخفية هو التوغل الطاغي في اماكن ومعالم مصرية ربما تكون غير معلومة أصلا للمصرين انفسهم، وهي متعة في حد ذاتها ان اقرأ رواية ممتعة تدور احداثها في مصر وفي الجنوب الغربي منها فيما يسمى بهضبة الجلف الكبير.
*وأصبح من الواضح أن بول سوسمان روائي يعرف جيداً كيف يختار شخصياته جيداً، أذكياء، مثيريين، متخصصين ومحترفين في مجالهم.
*ولمن قرأ الروايتين السابقتين لهذه الرواية ربما سيصاب بشئ من الاحباط لظهور شخصية يوسف خليفة محقق الشرطة الاقصري على استحياء في مشهد واحد فقط في منتصف الرواية، ولمن لا يعرف يوسف خليفة..فهي شخصية غاية في التعقيد والواقعية والجمال وهي الشخصية الاساسية في الروايتين السابقتين لهذه الرواية.
*غير انه قد يعاب على رواية - وظف كاتبها الانجليزي معرفته العميقة بمصر ليس فقط على صعيد علم الآثار وإنما وصل الي مقالب قمامة منشية ناصر ومشجعي النادي الاهلي المتعصبين - انها وإن كانت معظم احداثها تقع في الواحة والجلف الكبير إلا أنها لم تعطي حقها تماماً للبدو من حيث أراد كاتبها ان يجعلهم حافظي للسر (سر الواحة الخفية) فذكرهم على استحياء في مقدمة الرواية وخاتمتها، في الوقت الذي تجد روايات (وهي بالطبع ليست حجة على الروايات الاخرى) مثل رواية (منافي الرب لاشرف الخميسي) تتوغل في اعماق اعماق أهل ذات المنطقة (الداخلة).
*من خلال قراءتي لهذه الرواية حرصت على البحث عن الاماكن او الادوات المستخدمة في بناء الرواية.. وحصدت الكثير هذه المرة بمعرفة اماكن جديدة ك.. ابيدوس في سوهاج، و مووط وواحة الداخلة والجلف الكبير وبحر الرمال الكبير وجبل العوينات، وأدوات جديدة ك الطائرة التي استخدماها في عبور الصحراء Pegasus quantum 912 flexwing microlight - ورؤوس ايزومير الصاروخية المضادة للمادة. وحتي حجر بن بن في الميثولوجيا المصرية القديمة لم أكن اسمع به من قبل.
*وفي الاجمال فإن أي مكان - حتى ولو كان صحراء مقفرة - يتحول في روايات بول سوسمان إلى مكان مثير بالالغاز.

I read for entertainment, so I don't expect memorable characters, great scene-setting or particularly enthralling plots. This is one of the very few books that I had to force myself to finish. If the "I'm sorries" were removed, this book would probably be about 100 pages shorter. The Freya character was especially irritating. All she seemed to do was whine about how badly she treated her sister. At the end, I was almost screaming for both her and Finn to fall off the cliff and get it over with. About the only time this book would be worth the hours spent would be if you were stuck in the airport lay-over from hell.

فكرة الكتاب جيدة و مشوقة و لكن اكثر الكاتب من التفاصيل لحد الملل و كأنه يرغب في زيادة عدد الصفحات على حساب السلاسة و السرعة في تعاقب الاحداث ليحافظ على نمط واحد خلال الكتاب و لكنه فشل في ذلك فشلا كبيرا الى حد التوقف عن القراءة لعدة ايام في كثير من الاحيان.
