One Hole in the Road

"A single hole in the road causes considerable commotion in this clever counting book.... The energy of Yaccarino's retro images matches the rhythm of the text, as flagmen wave, stoplights flash, and storefronts flood, oh my!" -- Booklist

One Hole in the Road by W. Nikola-Lisa, illustrated by Dan Yaccarino introduces the numbers one through ten while describing the machinery and people used in trying to fix one hole in the road.

Yaccarino's bright, bold illustrations are created using gouache on paper. He uses a beige background, blocky people, cars and buildings, and eye-catching shades of red, blue, yellow, green, orange, black and whites. Yaccarino masters the essential elements of shape and color.
Multicultural characters are portrayed trying to solve a problem stemming from just one hole in the road. My favorite images are 2 flagmen, 3 barricades, 5 sirens, 8 water pipes, 9 storefronts, 10 workers and final page.

Using just 46 words in a large font, action words used include waving, flashing, blaring, huddling, pounding, gushing, flooding, hurrying and scurrying. Flagmen, passersby, engineers, and workmen with shovels and wrenches, are all busy or inconvenienced by a single hole. The story is foremost, while the counting, both numbers and written out, is secondary. This can work as either a read-aloud or as a beginning reader.

For ages 4 to 7, counting, construction, city, road, and fans of W. Nikola-Lisa and Dan Yaccarino.

A nice counting book about construction workers. It has some humor as the problem of fixing one whole gets out of hand. The story is front most, and the counting aspect is secondary.

One hole in the road gets a lot of attention. The wrap around story begins and ends with the same line - One hole in the road.
