Let Every Nation Know is the first book of its kind-a historical biography in Kennedy's own words. Combining a remarkable audio CD of Kennedy's most famous speeches, debates and press conferences with the insights of two of America's preeminent historians, the result is a unique look at the world-changing words and presidency of John F. Kennedy. Robert Dallek, author of the #1 bestselling biography An Unfinished Life, and Terry Golway, author of Washington's General, bring to life the soaring oratory, marvelous wit and the intense drama of Kennedy's words and the events they evoke. ?I had forgotten just how powerful these speeches were but the CD brings them to life once more and Dallek and Golway have done a masterful job of putting them into context.?-Bob Schieffer, CBS News
Robert A. Dallek is an American historian specializing in the presidents of the United States, including Franklin D. Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, and Richard M. Nixon. In 2004 he retired as a history professor at Boston University after previously having taught at Columbia University, the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and Oxford University. He won the Bancroft Prize for his 1979 book Franklin D. Roosevelt and American Foreign Policy, 1932–1945, as well as other awards for scholarship and teaching.
In the midst of the 11/22/1963 anniversary, which was really more about Lee Harvey Oswald and Marilyn Monroe, if you look at time spent by the media on specifics, this book was a welcome exception. It came with several of JFK's speeches recorded on CD. Dallek focused this book on Kennedy's gift for communicating, both in his campaigns and in moments of crisis. More importantly, it dawned on me that we would all do well to listen again and reflect on it, as citizens today. It was as if Ben Franklin was president for 3 years, only at a time of domestic and international crisis. There was too must dust in the air at the time, to digest all of it, between re-fighting the Civil War at home, the Cold War abroad and Vietnam's fight against colonialism. The easy response was to put Kennedy on a pedestal or dismiss him. This book lets you revisit that period and study Kennedy's response and thinking. It's impressive and relevant to today.
I might describe this book as a presidential-years biography of John F. Kennedy built around his most famous speeches. It was a unique angle to take on a man who has been over-biographied and it really enlightened me on his ideology. I finished the book understanding much more his era and his approach to leading our nation. I was always fond of Jack Kennedy and this book only heightens my disappointment that he died so young before he could run for a second term. There is no question his character was exceptional among our 45 presidents whether you agree with his policies or not. The accompanying CD of his 31 most notable speeches permits even further immersion into the man and his life as president.
You have to be a real JFK buff to get through it. The CD that comes with it of his most famous speech's makes it worth owning. (Includes RFK's speech at the Democratic National Convention the year after his brothers death).
My first iPad book. I read this book as an enhanced book on the iPad. It included snippets of speeches and other audio files. I enjoyed it though it was not an in-depth look at JFK. It focused on his optimism and vision. Sad we lost him so soon. One can only help but wonder what would have been.
