Some people just seem to know they are meant to write, but it can still take a while to figure out exactly what their career will entail. Kate Douglas started out writing radio copy for a country western radio station in 1972, wrote and illustrated an educational cartoon strip for the American Mosquito Control Association for a number of years, was a newspaper reporter for a small town weekly where she covered everything from high school sports to drug busts, and then, in the mid-1980s, decided to write her first romance.

Many submissions and rejections followed.

In 1998, she sold to a small ebook publisher before anyone knew what an ebook was, but it wasn't until 2005, a full twenty years after finishing that first romance, that she signed with a New York publisher.

In January 2006, Kensington Publishing launched their Aphrodisia imprint of erotic romance with Kate's Wolf Tales, a sexy paranormal series about a lost race of shapeshifters. She went on to write 21 novels and novellas in that series, then wrote three other series for Kensington before moving to St. Martin's Press.

She has two series with SMP--The Intimate Relations series complete with three novels and one novella of romantic suspense set in California's wine country, and an erotic paranormal series, Feral Passions, set in California's Trinity Alps.

She is also continuing her Spirit Wild series, the sequel to Wolf Tales, independently.

Kate and her husband of over forty-five years have two adult children and six grandchildren. They live in the small town of Healdsburg, California, in the heart of the beautiful Sonoma County wine country.

A high action pack read. I did enjoy this read although it didn’t have as much humor to it as the first in the series. I loved the talking swords and the depth that Kate takes you into the world of the Lemurias. She explains a lot and makes you want more and I mean more, actually I was kind of mad at the end Kate takes you to a point about the Lemuria and then stops without telling the rest grrr. I wanted to know what happened to the slaves and the outrageous counsel, (especially Alton’s dad), but nope I didn’t get it I will have to wait for the next book…

I enjoyed the hero and heroine to a point, they started out really good then all the sudden Ginny gets a conscience and says I cant be with you because I will have to quit my job and fight demons, you know the whole I am woman and no man will rule me, this takes a while to get past, then they are on happy street again. Plus Ginny cries a lot. All in all these two weren’t that bad to read after Ginny figured out what she needed to be doing.

I did like this book more then the first because of Kate’s explaining more how this world works. The sex is slimmer than the first book, but there is enough to keep you going and what’s there is really hot. I loved the storyline and whose body the demon king took over, it took me a bit to figure that one out.

I will say to those that did like the first book to this series try this one its different. Especially for those who wanted more explanation on how this world was set up.

I really enjoyed the first book in the series, but this was a did-not-finish for me. Maybe it's because I'm sick, but it didn't seem as fun--or as funny--as the first one. The repetitive inner musings and descriptions totally slowed down the pace, making the storyline completely lack urgency, and Ginny and Alton kept negatively comparing their three-day old romance to the two-week old "true and enduring love" found in Eddy and Dax's romance from the previous book. Add in that human culture is treated as monolithic--one of my biggest pet peeves in PNR and futuristic romance--and, by the time I was halfway through I was annoyed with both the characters and the author. I might try it again later, but right now I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

This book lost a star because of the unbelievably annoying repetition of the phrase "nine hells!" ....tone it down, it was unnecessary as an exclamation in every single conversation.
I struggled to finish this book it seemed to drag on and lose my interest.

This second book of Demon Slayers took us on a journey of finding love, a family connection, not known, and finding strength from an inner light. Ginny was forced to go to Sedona by a compulsion that Alton had subjected her to but eventually with all the possessions of animals in Sedona her memory came back. Once it did she contacted her friend Eddy to tell her about what she thought of her friend Alton and what he had done to her to get her to leave town. Alton was then forced to go be with Ginny in Sedona and to take care of all the animals that had been possessed. In the process of all this he discovered that Ginny was a long lost royal and she was gifted with her own sentient blade called Hellslayer. Once she was given this blade everything seemed to be coming to a head with the Demon King himself. He started out right to attack Dax for his life force and Alton found out things about his father that was demoralizing to say the least. The next book in the series should have us more spell bound considering what needs to happen next with the Lemurians themselves.

Another hit from Kate Douglas. This time demons are inhabiting animals and not just garden gnomes and statues. The battle between good and evil and the balance tipping in the wrong direction is again an interesting plot. Love that the same characters from the first book are here and you learn more about all of them. Liked the addition of a new human to the team...the veterinarian.

Great character development and a great plot. I cannot wait to read the next installment in the series.

Quick & Dirty: Thrilling story of magic, demons and love.

Opening Sentence: Ginny Jones wrapped a clean kitchen towel around her torn fingers and glared at the screeching cat she’d finally managed to shove into the carrier.

The Review:

Back again for the second exciting installment of this series is our favorite ex-demon Dax, his lovely female Eddy with her dog and father, and their new found friend, the sexy Lemurian, Alton. Also joining them from the previous book is Eddy’s best friend Ginny.

This time it is Alton’s turn to fall in love with a beautiful human woman, and there sure is something about that girl, Ginny. In the first book, they share a kiss as he tries to supernaturally convince her to go on vacation to escape the danger brewing in her home town. The compulsion works then, for she goes off to visit her cousins in Sedona. Unfortunately, her trip to Sedona has actually placed her in just as much, if not more danger than she’d have found if she’d stayed home. For the demons in Sedona have now learned they can possess small living creatures, and are causing all the towns pets and woodland creatures to go crazy. When the crew finds out, Alton travels to help save her, and the residents of Sedona. As she is now highly involved, Alton must divulge all of his and the rest of the groups paranormal secrets. At first she is skeptic, but cannot deny the things she has seen with her own eyes.

When they realize that their small group is not nearly enough to fight this battle alone, Alton returns to Lemuria with Ginny in hopes of changing the minds of his father, The King, and his ruling council. He wishes for them to send help to Earth in the form of warriors and their special talking crystal swords, both born for the job of hunting demons. Upon his return, however, he is renounced from the royal family, and ordered to prison for his defiance of his father’s law. Alton takes Ginny and runs back to Earth, with a little help from some warriors and Alton’s best friend. Hurt and confused, Alton asks his friend to remain in Lemuria when he would do otherwise, to try to talk some sense into the council, or perhaps just the soldiers, and to keep them posted on the events that take place there in the meantime.

Back on Earth, they are met in Sedona by Dax and Eddy, and they encounter the head demon as he attacks Dax and tries to literally suck out his life force, not once, but twice. Their final encounter with the beast, in this book anyway, takes place during a county festival, with that nasty evil inside a living bull, with horns and everything. Ouch!

Oh, and I forgot to mention one other tiny fact. It turns out that Ginny is a descendant of a Lemurian, a fierce female warrior from thousands of years ago. While they are in the Kings Court, a woman approaches Ginny and gives her the gift of a crystal sword of her own, and her very own immortality. So now, Ginny is as supernatural as the rest of them. But, all of this, combined with her budding romance with Alton, may prove to be too much for one girl to handle. Especially, one girl who is afraid of intimacy and its price if things go south. But, as always, love will find its way.

Another great story from a very creative author and the next one looks as if it is sure to follow in the same direction.

Notable Scene:

Fighting panic, Ginny quickly weighed her options. Dax was down and bleeding badly. Eddy’s leg had a deep slash. BumperWillow was either unconscious or dead and Alton was clinging to the bull’s back without HellFire. Ripping off her skirt, Ginny stood her ground in her white camisole top, black lace panties, and red platform sandals, waving the red fabric in front of the bull like a matador’s cape.

She didn’t know if demons liked red or not, but this demon-powered bull was putting his head down and blowing huge blasts of hot air from bleeding nostrils—thank you, Bumper. And he was glaring at the billowing red skirt.

Alton flashed her a thumbs-up and nimbly jumped from the bull’s back. He reached for HellFire. The sword burst out of the dirt directly into his grasp. Alton held his weapon high and raced toward the bull. Just as he got within striking distance, the animal swung his head.

One of the long horns ripped into Alton’s side and lifted him high overhead. Ginny screamed. She felt Alton’s agony through their mental link as the horn sliced deep into his body. The bull swung his head and Alton tumbled over his broad back like a rag doll. HellFire once again landed in the dirt, but this time Alton lay beside his sword, unmoving.

Ginny searched for his thoughts and found nothing.

Then the bull charged.

2. HellFire

3. StarFire

4. CrystalFire

HellFire is a hellishly good ride, and Alton is delicious. Actually, he's an over six-foot tall, well muscled, beautifully delicious dirty martini and he's all mine, (Didja hear that, Kate?)

We met Alton in DemonFire, when he met Dax, a former demon, during his and (his human soulmate) Eddy's trip to Lemuria, an alternate dimensional world, Dax and Eddy were looking for help in fighting the demons and he decided to help them save the worlds from Demonkind. Now he's back and is the hero of HellFire, with Ginny as his heroine. He'd developed a strong attraction to her and she to him, forcing Alton to send her to Sedona via a mental suggestion.

Alton returns to the scene in this new adventure, where he discovers himself, his purpose, and his love. He also discovers the truth about his father, the real history of Lemuria, and some uncomfortable truths about himself.

In DemonFire, he, Dax and Eddy all have crystal swords with dormant spirits of past Lemurian warriors. Only through their honor and bravery will these swords awaken to help their owners in the epic fight of good versus evil.

Now, for the good stuff: This story was well-crafted to continue the DemonSlayers saga, as it picks up where it left off, with everyone having survived their horrendous battle with the Demon King and several surprising changes. We also see Alton's attraction to Ginny has not waned, but rather flourished with her absence, an absence which he forced on Ginny with mental suggestions and a steamy kiss *fans self*.

Ginny is in Sedona, visiting relatives she doesn't really know nor like. Her aunt doesn't like her, but she and her cousin have developed a tentative friendship. Ginny also doesn't understand why she's there in Sedona, just that she knew she "had to go there".

Well, Alton and Ginny meet up again, when Alton discovers unsettling knowledge that the demons are entering Sedona through a newly discovered vortex and are possessing wildlife (a new development as they'd only possessed inanimate objects in the previous novel).

And the passion? Yes, it's hot. H-O-T HOT! Alton has never known a woman such as Ginny, a fiery, independent, in-charge-of-her-own-life woman. She's got a job, money of her own and refuses to be owned by any man, especially Alton. Alton is everything she despises, or so she thinks: he's overpowering and overwhelming. And incredibly sexy.

Ginny is everything Alton is NOT looking for in a mate, yet she's everything he admires and desires: confident, brave, beautiful... Oh, and she's just like him--at least, when it comes to origins.

She meets his father on their disastrous and fruitless trip to Lemuria, she finds out she's somewhat like the Lemurians, in more ways than one... They also find out some VERY interesting information regarding the true history of Lemuria, why it was moved to its current location and where the female warriors have gone. Ginny receives her own crystal sword and she and Alton escape to Earth, with the aid of a few soldier friends.

She and Alton make a surprisingly new friend in a veterinarian in Sedona, try to figure out where the demons are coming from, what they want, and are still trying to defeat the Demon King.

Ginny and Alton also overcome their differences and struggles with who they are and what they want to be, both individually and as a couple, to find that love can conquer doubts and fears. They also learn to listen with their hearts as well as their minds.

Day by day the demons are getting stronger. No longer are they restricted to inanimate objects, they are now able to take over animals. Dax, Eddy and Alton knew they were in trouble when store mannequins started walking but they never expected what they would face next.

Alton is obsessed with Eddy’s best friend Ginny and can’t get her off his mind. He sent her to Sedona to get her away from the battle but to his surprise, he had sent her straight into the heart of it. Ginny Jones can’t remember why she decided to visit her family in Sedona, one she has little contact with, but she finds herself in the middle of the twilight zone.

Alton is beside himself when he realizes that Ginny is in danger because of him. He is drawn to her like no other. He can’t stop thinking about the kiss he gave her to erase her memory. He doesn’t want to admit it but it meant more to him than it should have. He is adapting to Earth but he misses his home in Lemuria and his best friend Taron. He has been exiled but he can’t think about that right now. If they don’t stop the demons and the demon king, the world and all dimensions will change forever.

Ginny can’t stop thinking about Eddy’s college friend. She’s only met him once but she is instantly drawn to him. She doesn’t understand everything that is going on around her and she is having a hard time letting go of the cage around her heart. She is an independent woman that makes her own decisions and provides for herself. She is determined not to fall in love but if she did, Alton would be the perfect man for her. He is caring, doesn’t try to stop her from joining the fight and wants him to stand beside him, not behind him.

When Alton and Ginny go to Lemuria, they are both in for a few shocks. Ginny finds out some things about her true heritage and she is granted a crystal sword of her own to help in the battle, Dark Fire. Alton is arrested and is brought before the Council of Nine but the outcome is not what was expected. They are on their own to save the world, With the help of Dax, Eddy and Bumperwillow they set out to defeat the demon king.

It’s interesting to see what Demons are going to do next because they are getting smarter every day. I love that you can only see the demons true form in the light of Ginny’s sword, Demon Fire. The missing warrior women of Lemuria added a nice twist and I can’t wait to see the story behind it. The Council of Nine can’t continue to hide their head in the sand and act like nothing is changing when in truth everything around them is changing.

The story is well paced and provides you with tidbits about Lemuria and Lemurian society along the way. You are not overpowered with it and it doesn’t take away from the current battle on Earth. The tidbits give you insight to who Alton is and where he came from. They help you to understand his character and what he is going through himself. Both Alton and Ginny have issues and they almost let those issues keep them apart. They realize that they are better together than apart and that each day is precious and you have to live life as if each day could be your last.

The final battle is exciting and well written. I enjoyed it a lot. I was pulling for them and worried when things started getting out of hand but in the end Ginny came through with the help of Demon Fire and Hellfire. Overall I enjoyed Hellfire and give it 4 flaming hearts.

Tala’s Review

Ginny is a twenty something African American female with no close anyone else.family ties and very few friends. She is used to providing for herself and taking care of her own problems. She isn't used to depending on

Alton is a 7 feet tall Blond haired Lemurian warrior who chose to leave Lemuria, which is located in the center of Mount Shasta, in order to help fight the Demon incursion from Abyss. Alton comes a culture in which women were considered useful only for things like cooking, cleaning, keeping the household running, and keeping her husband satisfied. He is also an immortal who is over eleven thousand years old.

Alton and Ginny had met in the first book of the series Demonfire when he found her fighting for her life against a giant demon possessed concrete bear. Using his crystal sword, he destroys the statue and kills the demon that was using it. To help keep her safe, he hypnotized her and sent her to visit her aunt in Sedona, AZ, which is where we are now. Not knowing why she suddenly felt she had to visit her family, Ginny arrives and is immediately attacked by her cousin's demon possessed cat. Vaguely remembering something similar happening in her hometown the week before, she calls her best friend Eddy with questions. Alton arrives soon to help her out.

With demons taking over Sedona, Alton and Ginny travel back to Lemuria to try to get help with the fight. It is during this trip that Ginny finds out that she is descended from one of Lemuria's ancient women warriors. She is then gifted with her own crystal sword to use in the upcoming battles.

I absolutely love this book! Ms Douglas has created a unique world. The descriptions are vivid and detailed, and the characters are likeable. They fight and love with equal abandon as they feel their way through the relationship that develops.

Ms Douglas is an excellent writer. I found her through her Wolf Tales series and became a huge fan. This series has definitely not let me down.

With the addition of Hellfire, this is shaping up to be a killer new series, and one that is not to be missed.

Tenderhearted long-haired hero and magical swords.

I’m familiar with the concept of the legend of Lemuria, and I like the mythology it inspired Kate Douglas to create for The DemonSlayers Book series. Read this book while suspending disbelief and enjoy the tale! The fantasy world and its multiple settings is perfectly detailed throughout the narrative. All right, I confess, I have a penchant for long-haired heroes and magical swords. There are parts in Hellfire that remind me of Japanese animation and, since I’m a fan, Hellfire was an exciting read where I could easily connect with the story and its characters. And in a few instances I laughed out loud.

Lesser demons have started to work together under the orders of one who is powerful and vicious. They are possessing the bodies of animals and menacing human kind. Alton, an exiled Lemurian warrior, together with his fighting mates, Eddy, Dax, and Ginny, the beautiful woman that mesmerizes him, use their respective crystal swords to save the world.

Ginny is the kind of urban fantasy heroine I prefer - witty, strong and sassy. Someone who, regardless of the threat, never backs down. There is much more to Ginny than is first revealed.

Alton is a surprisingly tenderhearted hero. He's the kind of guy you'd describe as gorgeous and so cool, and the most relaxed immortal I’ve read about. Besides his warrior skills he is a great kisser. Lucky Ginny! She never stands a chance, even when Alton believes what separates them is greater than what unites them. Their love scenes are sensual and explicit. Resisting their mutual attraction is futile.

I wrote and lost a review... and don't have the energy to recreate it...

Ginny and Allton - united in Sedonia (where he mind suggested she go to be safe)... demons are stronger, more organized, and taking the bodies of animals (the local, savvy vet figures out to suck the demon mist when it escapes from the cages animal, then he freezes it : )

Allton's sword directs them back to Lemuria - he confronts the Council of 9 - dad (Chancellor of the 9) disowns him... the Crone (ancient, female warrior for 2,000 years ago battle with the demons) enters, says Ginny is the fulfillment of prophecy... gives her a crystal sword, then she fades into dust)

the 'commoner' Captain of the Guard helps them escape back to the portal hall, and when Ginny's sword touches his, it changes to crystal and sentient - and when the 4 soldiers with them touch swords as they commit to lemuria (not the council), their swords also change to crystal.

end of day... Ginny and Allton give up their preconceived expectations of a potential mate, and love each other just as they are... Allton grows from the entitled aristocrat to a man who knows his heart and actions belong to his people... Ginny learns to trust that she doesn't have to do it all alone...

and the Demon King took over Dax's demon body - and was trying to suck energy from Dax... but they sent him back to the Void... and Allton is pretty sure his father is host to a demon, from the end of the last demon wars thousand of years earlier - one that prompted him to put the female warriors into the mines as slaves, and to grab power - weakening the battle spirit of the lemurians... and Allton will have to confront this...

Kate Douglas had me hooked the first time I read Wolf Tales, to be honest, and I rarely dislike any of her work. I liked this one especially because it has a realistically strong heroine who happens to be a gorgeous women of color, specifically an African-American heroine. I love that Douglas, who is a Caucasian U.S. author, doesn't feel the need to restrict her heroes and heroines to one skin color. These novels have a lot of fun paranormal elements and a fast pace that makes them exciting, but the main event is still the love story. And Ginny and Alton make a great couple. They're both stubborn, he's a little arrogant, and they aggravate each other just enough to build the sexual tension. If this were a movie, I would cast Lee Pace to play him - we know he looks great as a stately blond because we've seen him in The Hobbit - and Rutina Wesley to play Ginny.

I purchased this book with my own funds solely for my enjoyment and was not obligated in any way to review it.

While I really liked this book I was also a little disappointed by it. It didn't quite deliver the full package that I was expecting. You have action and romance and some major revelations that come out into the open, but I felt like for all that we really didn't get very far. You have Alton and Ginny becoming a couple and discovering that Ginny is really Limurean. You discover that Dax has become the demon kings target and that he has Dax's demon body now. Finally you discover that Alton's father has hidden away the women warriors of Limeria and that to win the war they will need them. Overall while this was a good book it was lenghty for the little bit of information that was given as a whole. I will probably read the next book just to see if the demon king is defeated and hope that it is a major improvement from this one.

Just so so for me. We kept being taken back to the first story and it got boring after awhile. I did like the primary characters though and it was nice to have Dax and Eddy back. Oh BumperWillow too.
I would rate this one a 3.5, not really a three but not really a four either.
I don't want to discourage anyone from picking this book up and reading it, chances are you'll enjoy it. You sure don't need to read book one though so if you haven't don't worry about it. You'll do just fine starting here.

This is the second book in the Demonslayers series. I have to admit I agree with other reviewers that the inner musings by the H/H were a bit long-winded and repetitive. Would have loved a bit more action and world building instead. But overall, there was enough interesting developments to keep me persevering with the series.
