Wes and Toren

Rate this book
It's not so easy being young, gay, and in love for the first time at the average high school. Senior Toren Grey cares more about his family and his grades than what brand of clothes he wears. He agrees with the majority consensus that he's a nerd. So he's quite surprised when resident bad boy Wesley Carroll speaks to him in the hall, stirring feelings that Toren has to hide.

Disconcerted by Wes's free and easy ways, Toren can't deny the attraction between them. As he relaxes and gets to know Wes better, he finds there's more to the sexy rebel than his public image. Before long the young men are exploring new territory and falling in love, but life just isn't that simple. After they graduate, obstacles block their relationship at every Wes working versus Toren in college, the virulent disapproval of parents, and everyday trials faced by any struggling young couple. Wes and Toren have to believe in each other... and never doubt that their love can conquer all.

This book was a really enjoyable read for me. It is sweet sweet sweet coming of age story and just a perfect weekend book.

I loved that Wes always knew what he wanted, and was not afraid at all of his sexuality. He was a hot, confident character and I was totally won over by him. Toren irked me a bit with his reluctance to be open with their relationship but I adored them as a couple.

One of the best things about this book is the sex. Oh man!! They do it like horny little bunnies the whole time (you were right Mayor English (Laura)!!). Sexy hot little young bunnies... oh my this book had a lot of sex and I was NOT complaining.

My biggest issue was that nothing much happened in the story. After the first 30% when everything seemed resolved, I found myself wondering where the story was headed. There was nothing really left to say about Wes and Toren. The 70% or so after that point was filled with pretty mundane things. Nothing exciting happens. However, they are just so darn adorable that I didn't really care if they just sat at home and watched TV (which they did!)- I just wanted to see those two cuties in action.

Recommended for readers who like adorable, low angst reads.

**Note to author: please use the word frig more sparingly in the future. It was bothersome**

This book was much better than I thought it was going to be. UNFORTUNATELY it is in first person. In my opinion, I think it would have been better in 3rd, but it was still good. I just would have liked to have known what was going through Wes's mind throughout the book.

Toren is a shy, very intelligent, semi-geeky guy. Because he is so shy, he doesn't have any friends and is often overlooked, unless someone needs help with their schoolwork. It is close to the end of his senior year in high school, and Toren can't wait to graduate, so he will never have to step foot in the halls of his high school again. He lives in fear of being picked on, doesn't like confrontations and is a closet homosexual. Not good when you are 18.

Toren has has a crush on Wes for a while. Wes is the resident "Bad Boy" of the high school. Handsome and popular, Wes does enough to pass. He has been known as a troublemaker, but is well liked anyway.
When Wes suddenly starts taking an interest in Toren he is confused but elated. Wes wedges himself into Toren's life, and they soon become friends, then lovers. (Wes has always had a crush on the geeky Toren)

Because of Toren's fear of his homosexuality being discovered, they must hide their feelings for one another. Plus, they encounter more problems when Toren goes to college and Wes chooses to work instead.

I liked this book. I really liked Wes. He is definately a not what he seems, and I can understand why Toren fell so hard for him. I thought Wes and Toren were well matched together. This book spans about a year into their relationship and although there is a HEA, I wonder how things will end up ten years from now. I can only hope that they continue to grow and communicate together and not grow apart. (Wes was always worried about this, too)

I don't think I would consider this book erotic. Not so say there isn't alot of sex scenes in it. I would consider it explicit, but more on a romance novel explicit. There is also some drug use (Pot) in this book. It didn't bother me, but it might offend some people.

3.5 stars but I will bump it up to 4.

This started out a sweet and simple story, reminding me of my first forrays into the MM scene. Unfortunately, for me, it never progressed beyond simplistic. If anything it deteriorated into a excuse to write sex scenes.

The story was too drawn out with no real attention given to the issues of Wes and his parents or even the struggle two guys fresh from high school would of encountered while trying to set up house. Instead everything neatly fell into place, with the minimum of effort.

A lot of padding was used that really had little to do with the story, and just anoyed me.

2 stars for the idea and begining.

This was a very sweet-natured story about two young guys starting a relationship in high school and the heady days of getting to know each other as they fall in love through graduation and beyond. This is a gentle story with likeable MC's and some strong secondary characters. The storyline is quiet and there are a few bumps along the road as their relationship grows but there is a very strong emotional connection between them. It's a very HFN and I would love to say HEA but they're very young still. I would love to see where they're at in say ten years.

This is from Toren's POV and I think that a bit from Wes POV as well would have given it a better balance.

One thing that distracted me

All in all though. Cute and perfect if you're looking for a comfort read.

Wesley and Toren are great together. For the first half of the book I was sucked into a marvelous romance. I LOVE Wesley! Besides the fact that I love the name, AND the fact that Wesley's birthday is the day after Darian's (lol) AND he has dark brown eyes! I seriously liked the way he carried himself. Very confident, very sexy. Toren was adorable. I could feel his insecurity and I could see him change as time went on,

After mid-way, I just kept feeling like there was too much sex. (Did I just say that?) Yes, oddly enough. Not that it wasn't good. Each scene individually was great but it just seemed like too much. I wanted more "things" to happen. I longed for something to develop that just didn't. If you took the sex out, I bet it would be 80 pages long. BUT, on the other hand, if you want lots of sex with a sweet romance... READ IT!!

I do think it is one of my favorites, I can see why it is on so many lists. Wes and Toren are an awesome couple! But the story reminded me of when I read "The Vast Fields of Ordinary" because it just went on and on with the same feeling throughout the whole book. I DID appreciate the realness of Wesley's dialogue. "I know. It's amazing, isn't it? Gimme sex." pg 99. Totally loved that! and on pg 189 "“HI honey, I’m home! Take your pants off!” So funny!

I really really really really enjoyed this book, a lot. But I have a few complaints, and that's why I can only give it 4 stars.

1. Overuse of the word "frig" and its many variations.
2. Complete lack of plot. It was just cute scene after hot scene after funny scene, and the last scene didn't feel particularly more final than any other scene that preceded it. It just went on and on forever and then it ended for no reason.
3. Most m/m books are just too short to really do the characters justice, but this one was too long. It could have benefitted from some serious editing. Not that I didn't enjoy spending the time with these characters, they were so FREAKIN adorable, but because there was no real plot it just seemed to drag and meander and have no real purpose.

But aside from those things, I loved this story. Wes and Toren were so cute together, and I loved the way she wrote Toren. He had a real arc - he started off almost painfully shy and gradually grew into his own. He became more and more confident in both himself and his relationship with Wes, and turned into a flirty and sexually adventurous person and it was really neat to watch him grow like that. She did an excellent job with Toren's arc. And all the issues that they dealt with were very realistic. It was fun to watch them navigate becoming adults and being a couple. There were also several laugh out loud scenes. Overall a great book.

I noticed that some reviewers didn't like that this was first person. I actually liked it. I mean, life is first person. We don't ever get to know what anyone else is thinking, only what they tell us, and I like reading a book from that perspective sometimes. Not to say that I would like every book to be first person, but just that it worked for Toren's story. He started as very insecure and gradually became more and more confident, and I think that would have been undermined had we also gotten Wes's POV. We as readers have to learn to trust Wes the same way Toren does. I think first person was a good choice for this book and it was written well.

I really love the cover of this book; it is third book what I have read with the same picture on it.
As to the story I am disappointment and I even didn’t have big expectation from the start.
The writing is juvenile. There is almost none descriptions of people or places. For some reason Toren cries or gets teary eyed for every small thing, that was a bit strange.
Absence of plot. One reviewer compared this as some sort of diary but honestly I believe that openly gay 18(?) years old student’s life is more adventurous. Toren hooks up with Wesley soon after they have exchanged few small talks, they soon start to live together and probably one of them is saint as they don’t have small petty fights over anything. At all. But they have lot of sweet talk and good sex what becomes to be annoying and boring to read after few chapters. I actually finished reading probably waiting for something important to happen.

I liked it! This story was fairly uneventful, simply following Wes and Toren through their (somewhat mundane, but oh so sweet) everyday lives, but I was thoroughly entertained and enchanted by their modest love story.

It took me a while to warm to Wes (he came across as a bit of a douche in the initial chapters), but once he won me over I was a goner. I respected his confidence and determination to be happy, regardless of his crappy parents and their horribly atrocious attitudes towards his sexuality and his love for Toren.

Toren was eternally sweet and unassuming. His innocence and naiveté was endearing to a point, but after a while I wanted him to stand up for Wesley and himself during a few unpleasant run-ins with assholish secondary characters. He often just stood there like a stunned mullet, upset and teary-eyed, as several horrible characters degraded him and his relationship with Wesley. It was fairly enraging, mainly because I would have been opening a can of verbal whoop-ass if I were him. By the time Toren finally grew a pair, it was too little too late for me. But regardless, he was still a really likable narrator, effortlessly urging the reader to root for his ultimate happiness with Wesley.

Toren and Wesley are in high school. Tor is a self-professed nerd and is surprised when gorgeous, popular Wesley starts saying hi to him at school. Tor can't understand why Wes is paying attention to him or why he wants to be partners on a history project. The project brings them together and eventually their relationship grows into much more. The story follows the two boys over a number of years and tracks the growth in their relationship, as well as their growth from boys to men as they are forced into the adult world.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I put it on my "would read again" shelf because I finished this book with a big happy sigh. The book is basically like soaking in a warm tub...hmmmm, maybe because I did read it while soaking in a tub, but the atmosphere was perfect for the feelings invoked. This book just wrapped me in a cocoon of happiness and amore.

Despite the fact that I gave this book 5 stars, it surprisingly was missing a lot of the things that make a book "exciting" to me. There was no real plot and the book didn't really have a start, middle, end. In fact, the book basically followed the boys through scene after scene of their life, and while the last scene was one of my favorites, it was no more of a "defining moment" than many of the other scenes before it. In fact, some readers felt it went too long. But for me, since I really adored Wes and Toren, I was happy to read as much about them as possible so the length did not bother me at all.

Just don't expect to read a book with a strong plot and denouement, because this book does not have those things. What it does have are two kind and wonderful boys who meet and fall in love, grow together, and face challenges together. The challenges do not have a high degree of angst, but they must lean on each other and the strength of their love in order to overcome some hurdles.

This book is completely narrated from a first person perspective from Toren's POV. Some readers have issues with the first person, but I didn't have a problem with it. I usually prefer the third person, but since these characters didn't come with any huge communication issues that are common in a lot of romance/relationships, I never felt that I was missing out on what the other character was feeling. Again, some readers rated this book low for this reason, but I had no issue with it.

Why did I love this book? Wes and Toren were wonderful. For them to find a love so true at such a young age is pretty remarkable. They are loyal and devoted to each other, and I really wanted them to have their HEA. I loved Tor's family. His mother and especially his sister were just awesome. I wish this were more true to life and all families of gay teenagers had their wonderfully accepting attitudes.

As I said, I finished this book with a huge happy sigh and that is why it is a 5 star read for me. Thanks for the recommendation!

I really wanted to like this one. I got all the way to page 76, almost a quarter of the way through the book and just couldn't take it anymore. I understand that the characters where in high school, but the writing seemed to be a bit high school as well. The transitions between chapters was awkward. The characterizations were flat. The plot/story was very simple and the tone was too passive for me to become invested in the narrator or his issues.
Just not my cup of tea.

This is definitely a sweet read and while nothing really exciting happens, the interactions between the two MCs and what they go through just to be together was interesting to me and kept me hooked on the book.

Toren and Wesley have to be about the exact opposites. Wesley's the 'bad boy' while Toren is the 'nerd'. Wesley does drugs and drinks while Toren doesn't. Toren's family is accepting and loving while Wesley's family, aside from the brother, are mean and bigoted. Toren has no self-confidence while Wes has an overabundance of it. Wesley doesn't care what people think while Toren never stops caring what people think. The list just goes on and on about how different they are but no matter how long that list is, they still have some things in common and they still love each other to pieces.

It's really hard to decide which character was my favorite because both Wes and Toren have really great qualities. I loved the fact that Toren blushed so much. It was adorable how much he blushed and how Wes could so easily get him to do it. Wes, despite his bad boy image, was quite sensitive, patient and sentimental. He listened when Toren talked and didn't get all mean when Toren let tears fall. There was even a few scenes where I sighed because it was so sweet what Wes did for Toren.

Like I said earlier, nothing really exciting happens. This book is just about two teenagers trying to find their way on their own while having to deal with Wesley's bigoted parents. We first see Toren go through the process of accepting himself as gay because of his feelings for Wesley. Then, how they both deal with Wesley's parents finding out about them and how they can make a relationship work while Toren goes to college and Wes works full time. They deal with the struggles that every relationship no doubt has from jealousy to taking care of the other when they're ill.

And, can I just say how funny Wes and Tor are? Omg, I was cracking up throughout almost the whole book. There's quiet a few scenes where you'll be chuckling especially when it comes to what happens to Tor in Biology. [image error]

Overall, this was an awesome book which I recommend to absolutely everyone. [image error]

Wes & Toren is a touching, young-adult gay romance. Set in the present day and told in the first-person narrative by Toren, a shy and studious gay teen, the story chronicles the budding romance and eventual long-term relationship of an endearing teen couple.

Using the classic badboy-meets-angel format, the author portrays Wesley as a rough-around-the-edges street kid who falls hard for his bookwormish classmate Toren. Wes pursues him with a vengeance and of course Toren is ultimately swept off his feet. Initially both are closeted but gradually reveal themselves to family, co-workers, and a circle of close friends. The plot presents a series of challenges faced by the young couple including primarily their struggle to gain acceptance and legitimacy in the eyes of Wesley's family.

The story was well-written and realistically presented, and I found myself growing ever-more attached to the characters therein. Dialogue was believable, and the narrative itself was an easy read. Although using the first-person point of view can be limiting, the author craftily fleshed-out all of the story's central characters.

Towards the end of the book, the story was particulary heavy with graphic sex, frankly not to my liking. Although I do enjoy erotica, I'm not sure such depictions were necessary in this story. I was also a bit surprised and disappointed that Toren would compromise his standards and morals in terms of drug use. I'd hoped it would be the other way around, that Wesley would mature out of his pot-smoking habits.

Perhaps the most impressive characteristic of this story was the manner in which Wesley was presented not so much as a larger-than-life, knight in shining armor hero, but more realistically as the endearing, incredibly sexy boy next door. I liked that he was flawed in some ways, yet attractive on so many levels. His protectiveness of overly-sensitive Toren was very moving. At times I just wanted to reach right into the book and embrace Wesley. Amazing character!

Over all I'm thrilled to have read this book, and I look forward to future works by this author. It was a worthwhile investment of my time, and I was glad to bring these two sweet boys into my life and heart for a few hours... and probably forever hereafter.

I would rate this book 5 stars based on the biology lab scene alone!! Even without that brilliant scene, it's a 5-star novel with the best ending of any M/M romance book I've read (and I've read A LOT of them). I won't give it away, but it's AMAZING.

Wes and Toren are two gay teens who meet in high school and start dating. Toren is very shy, but luckily Wes has the guts to approach him and make the first move. Although they're two very different people (Wes is an outspoken bad boy who comes from a troubled home, whereas Toren is shy and booksmart and has a loving and supportive home life), they fall deeply in love. We get to see their relationship grow from those tentative first moments and first touches into something deep and lasting. They face their share of troubles along the way, but nothing too over-the-top as is often found in this genre. Ultimately, their genuine love for one another sees them through the obstacles.

Toren is a genuine sweetheart, who gets embarrassed easily, especially about sex; it's so endearing. And Wes has just what it takes to bring Toren out of his shell. The sexy times are HOT, but sweet and tender at the same time. My favorite type of romance novel. This one's definitely going on my "books to reread" shelf.

Wes and Toren is a sweet tale about a high-school nerd and confident bad boy (with a sensitive side) who meet and fall for each other. As is often the case in real life, try struggle with family, work, school, and their own insecurities. The relationship between the two main characters was somewhat adorable and it was a joy to see them grow into their relationship.

Still, it was a fairly tension less book, and I kept waiting for something to happen to tear my world apart (the angst monkey was beating at me)! Nothing ever really happened, other than every day trials and tribulations. So, while it was an enjoyable and sweet story, I still kept hoping for more plot. But, well, I need drama, so take that into account :)

A meandering tale, as described in other reviews as a series of episodes in the two main characters lives. I didn't enjoy it being in the first person, and must admit I kept reading it because I was waiting for something MAJOR to happen. But it didn't. And I guess in a way, that's what made this book so normal - it's like having a gay friend do a diary for you (perhaps with TMI) where he tells you about his day, a little bit about his sex life, etc but there's nothing to make you flip the pages to rush to the next part.

It was a sweet read - I just don't think it's something I will ever re-read.

This is the ultimate comfort read for me. It's just a sweet story. It's long and it's relaxed like someone taking a leisurely walk through a park on a spring day.

There was a natural progression to Wes and Toren's relationship. There was no insta-love and they don't have sex two minutes after they meet.

Is it exciting? Not really. Is it titillating? No. The story did, however, feel like an honest look at how a highschool sweetheart relationship might go.

Toren's a bookish, shy and sort of geeky senior. There were a few things I liked about Toren's character. He had a bit of backbone to him, and in the beginning he's not all moon-eyed over Wes. Wes is the school bad boy who Toren thinks is sexy and worth crushin' on a little.

Wes is a bad boy who's not all that bad and he's so adorable when he's with Toren. I love the scenes where Toren is trying to get Wes to study. It ended up being Wes who made me go "awwwww" a couple of times.

I would read another book about Wes and Toren that was maybe written from Wes' point of view. I really hope to see more from this author.

If you read this book... Just be prepared to read one of the most sexually explicit things you have ever read in your life... That's how I feel about it anyways. My goodness, these boys (who are in love) go at it like bunnies.. (Do bunnies even go at it that much? Is that saying even accurate? Hmm...) This is just a note and an observation- I am not trying to sway you one way or another. Just a heads up that you will find lots of m/m eroticism here as exemplified in the memorable line: "Honey, I'm home. Take off your pants."

Who needs plot when there's tons of repetitive sex scenes?

For Karen, some quotes:

"Oh Wesley!"
"The cup that held my desire was overflowing."
"I collapsed on top of him, the place of our union tingling and warm."

And I must mention the best scene ever wherein Toren swabs his mouth for a lab project and ends up looking at Wes' sperm under a microscope! How embarrassing! Of course, the prof says not to worry and why not try the LGBT club? So sweet.

This book is a favourite of mine, I love the book and the two main characters. Wes and Torren start a relationship that survives a few issues but they do their best to be grown up and talk to each other. I fell in love with both characters. Torrens mother and sister were great and so was Wes' brother and his fiancee. I hated his parents though and felt like punching them myself a few times. This will always be on my favourites list :)

I, um, yeah, well...

With this book firmly mashed at the top of so many lists, of course I had to eventually read it. Maybe...maybe if it had been the very first MM book I read? Or maybe not.

For me it was a plot arc short of being an entertaining read. Nothing really happened. Nothing. Well, they discovered the joy of sex, but don't we all at some point in high school?

Two stars for Wes knowing what he wanted, not caring what others thought, and just going after it!

I picked up this book because it was on someone's comfort read list and I can totally see why.

It is a sweet and hot (we are talking two young heroes under 20 so a ton of sex). We get the fun of a nerd and bad boy. There is really nice work thinking about entering the world of college and work wand staying with your first love.

There is a great mom and sisters and while some of the finer details are missing, it is a good read that will make you smile.

I really liked the premise of the book : nerd/bad boy. I thought them coming closer to each other would be the most of the story, but unfortunately it wasn't.

Wes (bad boy) talks to Toren (nerd) 3 times at school, he then picks the diligent student as a teammate for a history project, and it's all buckled down from here. They get together in the first few chapters and the rest of the book - 90% or so - is mostly Wes and Toren having sex 5 times a day (which i decided to skip) and really uninteresting things. There is no big conflict. The little that happened was resolved almost immediately (Wes leaving his parents' house, Toren's coming out to his mom, Josh,...). To be blunt, everything was going on so smoothly that for a second i thought the author would put a 360 on us and kill Wes as a big shock moment.

I really disliked both the main characters : Toren was insecure, always tearing up and biting his lower lip, while Wes was nothing but horny all of the time. The side characters were all one dimensional except maybe for Toren's gay father who had little to no part in this story.

The writing style is really poor. The characters are inconsistent with little to no growth to them. There is no real plot, it's more like a slice of life story with conflicts unchallenging trials. The dialogues were pueril and repetitive.
As for the main couple, i can't even picture them together in 5 years down the line. Wes' life is empty and if Toren ever comes out of his multiple insecurities, there is no way he's going to stick around a man who mostly drink beer and play pool.

Excerpt :

The store was pretty slow, so I was able to leave right at five. Then I remembered that I had to fill out a change-of-address form, so I left around ten after. When I got home, I put some chicken and potatoes in the oven and sat down to watch TV.

“Honey, I’m home!” Wesley shouted with a giant smile on his face.

I laughed and met him at the front door. He kissed me and I smiled, leading the way back to the kitchen. “I almost couldn’t wait to go to work just so I could come home and say that,” he said, washing his hands at the kitchen sink.

“You’re so silly. How was work? Did you have a good day?” I asked, emptying a can of corn into the small saucepot.

“Yeah, it was all right. I’m glad I don’t usually work Mondays though. We were busy as hell,” he answered, opening the refrigerator and stooping to look inside. “Oh, thanks for the pasta salad for lunch! It was great!”

“Good, I’m glad. And, dinner’ll be ready in about fifteen minutes.”

“Cool. I’m starving. What are you making?” Wesley opened a can of soda and placed his hand on my back.

“Just chicken and baked potatoes.” Wesley leaned in and kissed me, then went to the living room.

“I was glad you came up to work today. I’m glad you met Gus,” he said, flipping channels.

“Me too. He seemed really nice.”

*YAWNING*

Bottom line, this is a not a coming of age story i would recommend.
