Lev Walker has fulfilled his purpose in Elizabeth Moon's life, but it has come at a considerable price. The bullet meant for Elizabeth has shattered Lev's mortality and the forced separation from Elizabeth has scarred his spirit, so much so that Evan Walker has purged Elizabeth's memory in order for Lev to start over. Yet love is eternal. What began with a saving Elizabeth's life continues in healing Lev's spirit as he is forced to remember what he has lost at the risk of everything.
I was kindly given a copy of this book for review by the author, so thank you for that.
THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS SO BE WARNED!
Well this is the 2nd book in the "Sojourner" series and this time it is in the perspective of Lev. It pretty much starts where the first ended, but just switches minds. But there is a twist to it, Evan has wiped his memory away, and when he comes upon a "about-to-happen" boating accident that Elizabeth is involved in he recognizes something in her but doesn't know what it is. And he starts finding other things he cannot remember. He also finds he cannot do a Sojourn as he should be able to because he feels basically gutted with sadness when seeing someone dying. When he finds out his memory was wiped clean he is pretty upset because they say it was for his own good but won't really say what it is that makes it for his own good. So when he takes up friends with people that before the memory loss were kind of enemies, Celia starts trying to talk some sense into him. But because she will not divulge any more information than Evan, he doesn't listen to what she says. Well one of the angels named, Theresa says she can restore his memory, and she does, but not all the way, and he doesn't know that until much later. Then when he visits Elizabeth as he often does he see's how bad she is dealing with his "death" and wants to make it better by having her memory wiped of any memory of him. Theresa says she can do but but she needs this dagger that is supposedly very powerful, and Evan has it. So he steals it, and takes it to her which is when he finds out everything was a trick, that they only plan to hurt Elizabeth because they all disliked him so much before he lost his memory, and come to find out they are rogue angels and the dagger can destroy them. They take the dagger from him and do some kind of magic on his mind that knocks him unconscious with pain. Celia finds and they go to try and retrieve the dagger but Lev finds Elizabeth in danger, Kane is manifesting himself to look like Lev in front of Elizabeth and calling out to her, she looses her balance and goes over the falls (again). Lev goes after her but she still hits her head on a rock pretty hard and he tries to use that to make her think she had been seeing things when she wakes up, since his current body, i guess you could say, is different than the one she knew him as having. Later on he finds Celia was attacked and is basically stuck in her body and it's almost like she is dead, so he takes her to Evan, meaning he has to reveal what he has done. And while Evan fixes Celia, and then gives Lev back the rest of his memories, they have to go deal with the rogue angels in the hope that they can retrieve the dagger without one of them getting hurt. Which is pretty much where it ends off, with them agreeing they have to go retrieve the dagger. I enjoyed this book as much as i did the first one. But in a different way, idk if that makes sense. I liked getting Lev's side of things, and seeing how deep his and Elizabeth's love really is and how they can't ever get over it or forget it no matter what obstacles are in their way. It also showed that before Elizabeth, Lev had a kind of darker personality to him, which was interesting to see. I did miss the romance between the two characters, but i really look forward to starting book 3 and seeing what else goes on with all the characters.
If you like books w/ angels and/or romance stories or forbidden love and drama, then this is really good series to check out.
This book is the second in the sojourner series and I read it in 2 days because I wanted to know what and why Lev wasn't with Elizabeth after he was shot at the end of the first book saving Elizabeth's life. Lev is an angel so a bullet shouldn't have killed him. The story starts with the fact that Lev awakes in pain and with no memory. Evan, who is like his superior/ father type angel removed his memories of his love and connection with Elizabeth, explained in the first book in the series. Lev has been taken back in time to when he was colder, and unsympathetic towards humans as he carried their soul from this life to the next. He didn't even care for humans. He was a sojourner who carried the souls from the dying humans to their next place.
He has an accidental meeting with Elizabeth on a mission and starts to search out his memories. He is overwhelmed with emotions and can not even perform his sojourner duties, which were never a problem before. Evan will not help him, so Lev turns to a group of angels who all hold a grudge against him for past occurrences he can not even remember.
Lev finally regains his memory with the help of one of the enemy-friend angels and slips unseen to Elizabeth a few times and realizes his love for her, and her current torment at losing him. He turns to his enemy / friend angels to try to have Elizabeth's memory of him erased as a way of helping her deal with her pain, but is double crossed by the angels who pretended to be going to help.
Lev gets in a world of mess with taking an object from Evan and giving it to the angels who turned on him because of past things Lev done that they are mad at him about and Lev doesn't even remember what their problems were. Lev remembers his love for Elizabeth and now has created a new mess that he must help Evan solve against the bad angels before Elizabeth is put in danger again.
I liked this book better as it was told by Lev, rather than by Elizabeth like the first one was. In Lev's torment and love for the human Elizabeth, he knows he can not be with her, but will still protect her as best he can.
I look forward to the next book. There were many typos in this book, but I still enjoyed the story.
I was given this book from the writer, but was in no way paid for the review.
Double-edged sword: I loved Lev's perspective! I missed Elizabeth!
Covenant, the second book in the Sojourner series by Maria Rachel Hooley, is told from Lev Walker’s perspective. Covenant illustrates what Lev undergoes after the Sojourner cliffhanger. Lev’s journey is crucial to this series. I really missed Elizabeth since she is barely in this story, but I think it was important for Hooley to show that Lev had his own obstacles to overcome and battles of his own to fight. Also, with the help of some new characters we are given a glimpse into Lev’s background, and I really appreciated the history lesson.
I was very frustrated with Evan and Celia in this novel. At the beginning of Covenant, Lev’s memory is wiped back centuries (thanks to Evan), and Lev doesn't remember loving Elizabeth. She is in his dreams and he feels a pull toward her, but he doesn't remember her or understand the significance she has in his life. A lot of the drama could have been avoided if Evan and Celia wouldn't have lied and hidden things from Lev. I get they were trying to be helpful but they weren’t. It just frustrates me that the major conflict could have all been avoided with communication!!
On a similar but different note, I think it was neat how even though Lev doesn't remember Elizabeth he still feels connected to her. That’s (paranormal) love!!
I gave Covenant by Maria Rachel Hooley 3 STARS. I enjoyed the second installment in this series, but because Elizabeth was missing throughout the novel and because of Evan and Celia’s deception I could only give this novel 3 STARS. If you enjoyed Sojourner this is a must read.
God, this book was so sad.... It was hard to see Lev suffer like that, not having his full memories but only feeling desperation and a connection to Elizabeth and an ache in his chest. Seeing him cry and look at her suffer and mourn him and slowly die inside for she missed him so much she couldn't live without him... It was painful. I also was a little mad at how things have been dealt with Lev's memories by Evan. I know he meant well, but he just made things worse at the end of the day. Lev had to go seek help to bad angels and that was just so wrong. Speaking of thr Devil, I didn't like the evil gang. They creeped me out. I'm also kind of glad I've read Second Sight first (which was initially intended as 2nd book in the series) and then read Covenant (now being 2nd book in the series), because if I had read this first, I would have already known who the bad guys were in Second Sight and that would have spoiled the fun. I wouldn't have been in the dark like Elizabeth is. Well written story. Very emotional and touching. Also kind of frustrating and maddening. I really enjoyed this piece of the story from Lev's point of view.
The first had caught my interest so I bought the second right after reading the first. This one was probably my least favorite out of all of them. Though it was nice to see Lev's side of how his "death" was affecting him and Elizabeth, I missed Elizabeth more. It was very short compared to the other books but I'm glad it was. I think that I only needed a glimpse of what was happening on the other side of things.
Unlike the first this story is told from Lev's perspective which gives another heartbreaking side to this tale. Much more information into how the Angels work because the reader gets to learn along with Lev in some ways as he tries to recapture his memory. The idea that love is the one constant is truly present in this 2nd book to the series.....
Not as good as #1. This book is from Lev's point of view, continuing the story from #1. He makes some stupid decisions and it's just over and over about heartache, love struck, etc. Bleh.
