First, just because I saw it while selecting the edition I read… why? Why change the illustrations? The old ones are so darn cute and the new ones are just kind of pathetic. Dracula? Really? Give me the cute little boy and his curly-furred pup who learn all about blood.
I really liked it! Very straightforward and informative- perfect for children wanting to learn and who are starting to read on their own.
I’ll certainly be adding this series (the older versions, that is) to my library!
What better person to teach children about the blood in their bodies than a vampire! He and his minion, an Igor-like creature, teach all about what blood is made of and what it does in the body. I adored the illustrations, which added greatly to the text. The mixing in of some actual microscope photography was good as well. I think this picture book will be an entertaining addition to my classroom library.
Who better to tell us all about blood than a connoisseur of the red stuff - a vampire.
Here you will learn all about the circulatory system, red and white blood cells, and just how much blood is in the human body. An informative book with cute illustrations. And, I dare you not to read it using your best Bela Lugosi accent.
This books art makes it fun to read. It explains all about your blood. Your vessels, and cells. What happens when you cut yourself. My son enjoyed reading this one with me and had plenty of questions throughout.
Great information in a fun way. There's actual microscopic pictures of the parts of blood. I almost hate that it says level 2.....this makes the information seem too simple for anybody who is above a level 2 reading level. It's great information for many levels above 2!
I love the simplicity and wonderful illustrations of this Let's Read and Find out Science series in its original and bookclub edition formats. I plan to try to read all 54 of the original titles. This one was excellent beginner understanding of blood, its parts and functions.
I was able to find an original copy with normal children on it which I was thankful for. I have no issue with vampires but it’s more factual feeling the original way. That being said, I really enjoyed the information it provided. Brief but interesting.
A pretty good explanation for young readers about blood; how it works, what it's made of, what happens when it comes out, etc. Plus the main character is a vampire. How can you go wrong?
This book is all about blood! But is narrated by a vampire. It goes through the different parts of blood, what blood does, how it heals when you get hurt, and lots of other fun facts about blood.
This book describes what blood is. It explains its in your wrists, its how we can move our bodies, and it talks about how even our brain needs blood to think!
Evaluation
This book is a creative way to teach kids about blood in our bodies and how important it is for everyday life. This book is rather simple but can be read aloud to any grade.
Teaching Idea
This is a fun way to learn about blood, blood vessels, and how we are growing and changing. You could be amazing at what we need blood for. We can teach our students about how important blood is to survive.
A Drop of Blood is a fantastic informational book for children! It gives so much information about the human body, specifically focusing on our blood. Although this is a nonfiction, informational book, it includes two characters that help illustrate what the text states. These characters are a vampire and a monster! These illustrations will grab the attention of younger readers, however, should be used as a read aloud for lower leveled readers and an independent reading for upper leveled readers. The combination of the interesting facts and the detailed images really make this a wow book for me!
A Drop of Blood is a book that I discovered while conferring with a student of mine. I was so surprised by the detailed images, including pictures, photographs, and diagrams. It tied in perfectly to the informational standard we were discussing that week. While listening to my student read, I was able to discuss with her how the images helped her understand the text even better. Although anatomy is not a topic that is covered in second grade, this book really stood out to me and wowed me with its amazing images and diagrams. Not long after this conference, I borrowed this book from my student and used it during my mini lesson!
40 months - O has been pretty obsessed with blood since she had her first "blood owie" two months ago. This is the perfect book for her age to learn about what blood is and it's importance in our body. Great book. Be sure to grab your flash light when you read it so your kiddo can see the blood in their hands and fingers!
A Drop of Blood, Paul Showers Grade Level: 1-4 Topic: The Circulatory System Description: This book does an excellent job at showing how the circulatory system in humans works, incluiding bloodflow, white and red blood cells, how scrapes form and heal, and more. This book's format is fun for children because it presents the information in a horror movie format with a friendly vampire.
For myself I would give this book 4 stars but my kids ask me to read it over and over so that is definitely worth an extra star. A fun and creative way to learn some basic biology concepts, this book is primarily about blood but it is also the first book I've encountered that discusses cells in a way that my preschooler seems to grasp.
Considering getting this for my nephew, so checked it out first. A decent overview about blood and a bit of the circulatory system. Not too dumbed-down, but just right for kindergarten-1st graders I think.
The illustrations are not so beautiful but they accomplish their purposes and the text helps to explain very well. The content of the book, the blood, is very well explained for kids. My three years old daughter liked the book and understood it.
