This is THE definitive resource for anyone interested in making cloth dolls. After I was through with all 80+ detailed pages of dolly goodness, I was completely obsessed with making dolls. (

I just had to take a sewing class first before I could actually make any, since I knew nothing about sewing. :)

Anyway, Susanna is a world-renowned doll expert, and she is sadly missed in the doll community. This is a terrific book for nearly every aspect of dollmaking.

This is the book that made me want to try making dolls.

Its approach is to talk about lots of different techniques, describe them, give you lots of examples and encourage you to try and experiment. I came out of it with so, so much I wanted to try. I still floundered a bit, and had to find specific projects, but it made me WANT to experiment and understand the process in the first place.

If you were going to make a doll entirely out of cloth, then this is the book you would want to study.
I'm not going to make a doll entirely out of cloth, but will probably use it as a resource for the body to which I'll be adding a polymer clay head and hands.

Incredibly thorough overview of creating dolls of various levels of sophistication, as well as the evolution of dolls. I feel like I could sit down and craft something relatively well done after reading it.

Pretty much any book by Oroyan is a sure bet when it comes to excellent artwork, great techniques, and a more encompassing view of what an "art doll" is.
