Interesting “historical novel” (that may be a bit grandiose – chick lit set against a historic backdrop is probably more like it) set between 1904 and 1944. It’s a melodrama, but the characters are well developed and I’m pretty unapologetic about liking it – sort of like Herman Wouk or Howard Fast only with lots more sex. I’m sure my history-major niece would cringe at my calling this any kind of “history”! The plot devices weren’t terribly original – I kept thinking of all the books and movies of which I was reminded as I read through this – The Secret Garden, The Magnificent Ambersons, Valley of Decision, The Cotton Club, The Count of Monte Cristo, Romeo & Juliet, Dorian Gray, Citizen Kane, The Young Philadelphians, etc. etc. --- The tale was spun in such a way that I found myself wanting to go read more about the actual historical back stories (which I will probably do), and most of the interwoven plot lines were satisfactorily resolved. I kept thinking what I often think when reading books of this type – “why don’t you people talk to each other?” --- but then there wouldn’t be 724 pages of angst and anger and back-stabbing… !
I'm surprised not more people have read this book. I found that following Connor's entire life throughout the book is not something I have seen before. We get to see him idolize Rhys and hate Constance. We go through the pain with him of feeling like he is looked down upon. We get to see his perspective of people and society as a child and as an adult. I fell in love with this novel for it included the complications of politics, the losses of war, forbidden love, and different classes of society. I truly enjoyed this book through and through and was extremely satisfied how it came in a full circle.

I decided to try a new author and I'm so pleased I did. This was the 1st of Leona Blair's novels I've ever read... and I wasn't disappointed - I couldn't put it down. A World of Difference is a most intriguing story. A family saga set in New York, London and France during the early decades of the 20th century - passionate love story where the characters become real to the reader. I enjoyed this so much, I have purchase two more of her books. I'm currently reading Fascination, which is entirely different - in fact, had her name not been shown on the front of the cover, I wouldn't recognize it as her writing.
