“Her characters are intelligent, vibrant and wonderfully complex. Katharine Ashe writes with eloquence and power.” —New York Times bestselling author Lisa Kleypas ..
Este livro explica o que aconteceu a muitas personagens da série Falcon Club: When a Scot Loves a Lady, How to Be a Proper Lady e How a Lady Weds a Rogue.
At 25, Serena has given up hope of ever finding love or a husband. But she is a loyal sister and is determined to help her step-sister Charity make a match with the Earl of Savege. Of course, Serena has no idea that it's the Earl she has come across in a dark parlour, just before Charity is to meet the man. Sparks fly the second Serena and Alex meet. And the two share some passionate moments without ever exchanging names. When they come face-to-face at Alex's introduction to Charity, they are still drawn together like magnets.
Alex is not only an earl, but has a secret identity as a Robin-Hood type pirate. He's never had any inclination to settle down before, but is considering marriage in order to have an heir. Neither he nor Charity want the betrothal the girl's mother has engineered, but somehow they are both drawn into it. The story follows Serena as she struggles between her role as a dutiful sister and woman desperately attracted to her sister's fiance.
The non-romantic subplot features Serena's determination to bring down a smuggling ring targeting the area. The men have been linked to the deflowering and disappearance of local girls. And that hits close to home for our heroine, since her young sister was snatched that way as a child. Serena continuously appeals to Alex for help and even seeks out his alter-ego, in hopes the infamous Pirate Redstone would be the hero she needs.
The pirate subplot, I found myself skimming over in order to get back to the love story. There's a lot of talk about Alex and his brother's history with their arch-enemy Poole, but I couldn't bring myself to care much about it. Every time we went back to that part of the story or the smugglers, my eyes kind of glassed over. As for the love story: It was obvious from the beginning that Serena and Alex needed to be together. And it annoyed me how her step-mother's machinations to match Alex with Charity were successful for so long. It was a pleasure watching Serena's awakening; and just as much fun seeing Alex fall in love, despite his rakish intentions. The love scenes we had were solid. And I was satisfied with the ending.
This book is a companion to Swept Away By a Kiss. The hero from that story is part of this one. But in no way do you need to have read that book to understand what's going on here. 3 1/2 stars.
This was a fun, swashbuckling adventure. It started off really strong, but was a bit over the top for my taste at the end. To Katharine's credit though, she always managed to surprise me in this tale and it kept me turning pages.
Serena and Savege belonged together. Their chemistry was palpable and their personalities were a great fit. I felt that they were kept apart a bit too long, but this style of angst seems to be a favorite of Ashe's...while it isn't quite perfect here, she has created a perfect balance in her more recent novels.
In this story, Serena wants to get rid of smugglers on her coast so she approaches the Earl of Savege, not realizing he is a pirate of sorts himself. Sparks fly, unique characters are fleshed out, and an adventure unfolds. There is also a secondary romance in this story but I found it rather disappointing. How Savege and Serena could have such pale siblings when they had such strength was shocking, but it did create an interesting contrast.
Overall, a great read if overly dramatic. It is fun to see how Ashe has evolved from here. Many of her stylistic tendencies are here- adventure, angst, longing, and mystery- but they are so much stronger now. It's awesome to see. She just keeps getting better and better.
I reviewed this book for Romance Reader At Heart website.
My first clue to the quality of writing and editing of this book should have been the blurb on the back of it. The second sentence--"Firmly on the shelf at twenty-five, instead she's determined to find the perfect match for her beautiful younger sister. "--has the word `INSTEAD,' which frankly should not be there. It makes no sense. Take the word out, and now we have a comprehensible sentence. This sentence--"Now Serena can beg his help in halting a local band of smugglers."--left me confused and scratching my head as well. Why 'NOW'? Take that sentence out, and the blurb makes much more sense.
With pirates, secret identities, and romance in the mix, this should have been an interesting and fun read. Not so. I could see the potential, but the one-dimensional characters, almost cartoonish dialogue and lack of chemistry among all the characters, failed to keep me involved. Every one of those characters could have used more development. I didn't feel `connected' to anything or anyone. Everything in this book fell short of the mark.
I wish this story was thought through better. It was rushed, and it suffered. Not even the sex scenes, which were void of chemistry, could have saved this book. The author jumps around so often that I became dizzy at one point. I was surprised that this was not better edited.
The disjointed and uninspiring dialogue, a hero and heroine with zero chemistry, and a bland plot had me skimming through this story. If I hadn't committed myself to reviewing CAPTURED BY A ROGUE LORD, I would not have bothered at all. It would have gone into DNF pile.
This book does boast the honour of being the first ebook I borrowed from my library, so hooray for libraries.
But that's about the fondest memory I'll have of this. Our heroes meet in a darkened room, the classic historical romance set up, and the hero ignores the heroine's repeated "no"s and kisses her anyway. It's really hard to read this kind of brutish behaviour and continue cheering for the hero, no matter how dashing he may ultimately prove to be.
The smuggling subplot had potential but I got a bit frustrated with a very two-dimensional villain, and some jarring assumptions and resolutions. The whole resolution of the Charity dilemma in particular really bothered me.
So I'm thankful to my library for some froth, I just wish it had been slightly more coherent and compelling.
My one problem, and there is really only one, is that he wears blackface as his pirate disguise. I know it isn't intended as blackface as we know it but a dread pirate Roberts style mask would have suited just as well.
This book didn't work for me at all. Making me wonder if I should bother reviewing it. Nor do I know if it would folks any. Reviewing things is an odd practice. My mother and various friends avoid reading reviews, they see them as well irrelevant. One friend described reviews as either a rant, or filled with spoilers, and telling you more about the reviewer than the book. This is true. And after publishing my own work of fiction and obtaining mixed reviews, I find myself a bit more hesitant to write them, particularly scathing ones. Sure it can be cathartic, but then much later you think...what the hell was I thinking. It was just a book or work of art, so it didn't work for me, it worked for someone else...
Mileage it varies.
Anywho...the first part of the story worked, but somewhere around the 20-30% mark (reading on the Kindle), I wanted to throw it against the wall. The plot, characters, story, etc ...got on my nerves. So many of the situations seemed contrived to get the two lead characters into a hot sex scene. One sex scene in particular stopped the plot cold, and threw me out of the book. It was so poorly set up.
The heroine, Serena, is tracking a bunch of smugglers using the hero's land. She suspects they may be connected with the hero, but isn't certain. Or possibly connected with her brother, again not certain. And wants to find out. So she goes down to their cave to investigate and runs smack into two of them. They attempt to kidnap her, knock her upside the head, and drag her into a boat. She talks them into throwing her overboard, because she's not a maid, but Lady Carsyle, of the estate that owns the land that they are on. They get flustered and worry that "she" or whomever their leader is will get upset. So throw her overboard. She barely surfaces, and barely makes it to shore. Almost passes out from being knocked in the head twice. But managed to climb up the rock cliff and runs into the hero's steward, who immediately takes her to the hero. They met in his stables, she's cold, dripping wet, with a head injury, and a blanket around her shoulders. They argue and then proceed to have rough sex in the barn. Okay. Afterwards, he sends her home. Keep in mind, it's cold, she's dripping wet, with a head injury, and he's allegedly in love with her. I rolled my eyes throughout the scene.
The story? It's not a bad premise -- the hero, Alex, is sort of a Robin Hood character, he steals from wealthy Lord's ships and gives to the widows and orphans. The heroine, Serena, is one of those characters who basically puts the needs of everyone above her own, including a somewhat wimpy younger step-sister, Charity, and step brother, Tracy, who allow their mother, Davina, to run roughshod over them. Not to mention an incredibly weak father. Davina gets it into her head that Charity must marry Alex. We're told why at the end of the book. Charity is terrified of sex and can't stand the idea of it. Small wonder considering her mother has in some respects traumatized her. So the idea of marrying Alex, the Earl, and giving him an heir sends her into a fit of hysterics. He, of course, is far too busy looking for ways to ravish Serena, to pay much attention to Charity. Until Davina orchestrates a way to ensure that he sort of has to marry her. It's rather stupid and I never understood why he didn't call her and Charity on it a lot sooner than he does.
All of the characters act rather stupid. The conflicts drag on longer than they should. And the sex scenes felt a bit redundant, I kept thinking, yeah, yeah, can we get on with the plot now? No, fine. I'm skipping this.
The best sequences were aboard the ships. The writer is oddly better with the action scenes than the relationship/sibling scenes. This does not bode well for the rest of the books that I bought. I'm a bit disgruntled, because I have three other books that I bought written by this writer, which looked intriguing. Not sure I'll be able to read them now.
Note to self, you should finish the books you have before buying more. I really do need a chaperone when I buy books.
Although the first one I read, How to Be a Proper Lady wasn't bad, I liked it better than this one. Right now, I've hopped over to a Meredith Duran novel, Meredith Duran is one of my go-to novelists in the genre. I have about five in this genre that are reliable good reads. Meredith Duran, Sherry Thomas, Courtney Milan, Elizabeth Hoyt, and Eloisa James. Lorraine Heath isn't bad...and has some interesting premises.
Sometimes I miss the trashy novelists of the 80s, Judith Krantz, Rosemary Rodgers, Kathleen Woodwiss...who wrote lengthy books with lots of action, back story, and read like epic soap operas -- sort of the pulp versions of Thomas Hardy, Charles Dickens and Leo Tolstoy, except with happy endings. Today's writers don't tend to go into quite as much detail.
Ondan küçük olan Charity'i koruması altına almış.
Well done, Katharine Ashe! You kept everything I enjoyed about book 1 - mainly, your superb writing style - but kicked it up a notch with lovable characters I couldn't help but cheer for this time.
I adored the heroine, Serena Carlyle, especially: smart, loyal, daring, imaginative. Her periodic flights of fancy were utterly charming and, I suspect, something every creative writer can empathize with. Ashe successfully pulls off a difficult characterization - that of a innocent wanton - without making her a dupe or a slut. I empathized with Serena's desires rather than thinking she was immoral or stupid. Serena's eyes were wide open and she owned this part of herself, even if she wasn't terribly proud of it, and this made me love her all the more.
Alex Savege is deliciously, unapologetically naughty as well as reluctantly heroic. I certainly can't blame Serena for succumbing to his copious charms. But I think the best part of the relationship is that both of them accepted each other for what they were, for what they could offer in the moment. Nobody flew off the handle about anything. When a doubt or problem surfaced, they used their heads and logic to solve the issue. BRAVA to Ashe for promoting intelligent, mature understanding within a romance novel!!
Ashe's strength is definitely witty period dialogue. She should write for the next Masterpiece Theater costume soap. If you're the kind of person who lives for Maggie Smith's Dowager Countess Violet zingers, Ashe's stuff is right up your alley.
The plot of "Captured by a Rogue Lord" is a thorough romp, entertaining from its pirate shipboard mock-execution beginning to let's-sneak-away-from-a-sibling's-wedding-for-sex ending. It's chock full of romance novel tropes, all employed with a sly smile and tug of the hat. Smugglers! Secret identities! Tarnished reputations! Illicit affairs and illegitimate offspring! TWIN BROTHERS! Heavens, even a perfectly nasty wicked stepmother locks our heroine in her room at night... seriously! Ashe pulls it all off to wonderful effect.
Just once, I should like to read a book set in the West Country that doesn't involve smugglers. The words "Devon" or "Cornwall" guarantee there will be: an unwise midnight rendezvous on a sandy beach; running up and down cliffs; a family member caught up with the Gentlemen; and a higher-than-usual quotient of knowing locals. CBARL doesn't disappoint - at least, not on that front.
Katharine Ashe has written a couple of books I've rated highly (I Married the Duke and I Adored a Lord) and her writing style is equally enjoyable here. Serena and Alex have a believable chemistry; there's a decent reading on my Angstometer, too. I think this one didn't quite do it for me because of the over-blown plot (Alex can get away with being a Pirate King and a Peer of the Realm - really? I mean, really?) and the presence of all the clichés of the genre. I also raised an eyebrow at the underwhelming secondary romance between her sister and his brother.
Hmm.. Erm, I got very confused through this about who the hell wasa whom and then random characters seemed to just appear... I eally can't have been paying much attention. Anyways, the Heroine was annoying and all 'I mut protect her all the time. I must I must. Screw common sense ill do this. I need the hero to get with my sister, his betrothed even though im doing the dirty with him..' The hero was.. kinda funny sometimes but also quite borig too. Plus when he takes a bullet, just before he does it he says 'oh no'. Okay right iff I was about to get shot a hell of a lot more that 'oh no' would be cmoing out of my mouth. There would be a lot of effing this and effing that... Then a prayer to god for forgivveness.... Oh no is just........... it mde me think the villain was pointing a water gun at him or something. Seriously!!
My favorite part of this book was where Serena actually had a tiny bit of sexual experience - she wasn't the complete 25-year-old innocent lady facing the how-can-he-not-have-herpes-30-year-old man so beloved in historical romance trope.
Anyway it was good. And pretty long! Not sure what the point of Jin asking about Viola at the end, was, though, is that Rogues of the Sea #3?
Sıkılmadan kendini okutan bir kitaptı . Zaman zaman bende bıraktığı en güçlü duygu ise üvey annesi Davina yı evden kovma isteğiydi . Ilk kitapla kıyaslama yapacak olursam daha zayıftı diyebilirim ;)
The first chapter is probably the worst I have ever read in terms of content. The dialogue, between characters we don’t know yet, lacks context. That combined with the references to other characters and ships as well as historical nautical terms had me lost and very, very bored. I would have stopped reading there, but it was the only book I’d brought with me.
The second chapter felt like an entirely different book. It was steamy and full of sexual and other types of tension. I was invested in the hero and heroine’s forbidden attraction, since the hero is supposed to marry the heroine’s sister.
Luckily, the book continued in that engaging style. My biggest overall complaint is that the main characters, especially the hero, do not actively pursue their goals. The vast majority of the book, the hero is waiting for others to make choices that will push him closer to his goals. The heroine is more proactive, but somewhat helpless to move the romantic plot along since the hero is in an involuntary unofficial betrothal to her sister.
The hero, for all his piratical ways, did not have enough strength of will to make tough decisions.
I give three stars because I enjoyed the romantic bits and I love a pirate. But there are better pirate heroes out there!
I was getting a bit bored with the regency set...all the balls, lords, and the ton with everyone striving to be more shocked or outraged than the next person. So I was excited to get caught up in some pirate action, but this book didn't really pan out for me.
Heroine's father is a cuckold and a fool Heroine has been set aside because she gave her innocence to the wrong man Heroine's step sister is as boring as weak tea and annoying Heroine's step mother is classic (read: evil and one note)
The hero is supposed to be tragic and flawed after his twin brother was crippled but in reality is not that interesting Hero's twin brother has been crippled by his own pridefulness and is the perfect yawn inducing counterpart to the step sister mentioned above.
The book passed the time but was not a page turner .

I have read this book at least 3 times if not more! The beginning of this book where the primary characters meet is the most intriguing scene in a Romance Novel I have ever read! I have been hooked on Katherine Ashe's books ever since. Her attention to detail and research into the period of time she explores makes her Novels hard to put down once you start! Well done Ms Ashe.... What are you waiting for? Get reading!!!
Took a little bit to get into it, especially as the author insisted on using a lot of true to time vocabulary which was a little jarring to read being so unfamiliar. Timing of the plot was good after that though, good villains, OK twists and a happy ending.
