One can’t blame such a short book for not being detailed enough. The author is trying to put a complicated century and a half of a sophisticated course of History into 140 pages. That being said, the book does in a sense gave a broad overview about the main issues that Japan as nation and as a culture dealt with throughout its modern period. Questions about identity, confrontation with the West, Imperial History and brutal socio-economic changes.
The book started by squaring the main issue of Japan and Modernity very well. The problem lies in the concept of modernity itself. Because of the peculiar circumstances in which the concept was thought of, we subconsciously think that modernity is something out there for others to achieve, to adopt or to struggle with. Modernity is in fact a set of ideas and ways of organization, that can appear separately, perhaps incompletely in other cultures than the West.
The first chapter elucidates what was the political, social and economic scene in Japan before the dramatic confrontation with the American ships led by Commodore Perry in July 1853. Japan was not any feudal monarchy; it was not completely isolated from the world. It seems like it did have a substantial political class with a sophisticated distribution of power, it was a much more urbanized in pre modern standards. At the same time socio economic and demographic pressures provided seeds for social upheavals and political changes. When it comes to the confrontation with the West, although of isolationist tendencies, the political elites understood and formed an excellent judgement of the danger that lies ahead, and the fact that there were only two options: miraculously westernize or be governed by Westerners.
The political class had to make some difficult choices: abandon some of its privileges, introduce new ideas and fundamentally change its way of governing. To peoples who confronted the same challenge posed by Western Modernity, and a part from all external favorable conditions, it was this ability to change, and to make the sacrifices needed to implement that change that set the Japanese a part.
In 50 years from Commodore Perry’s surprise visit, Japan had a Constitution, a representative government and was heavily importing western education, industrial and warfare techniques. Unfortunately, the book does not detail this step which was crucial into the making of Japan as we know it today, but moves quickly into the consequences of this successful implementation. As Japan westernized and modernized, it demanded equality with westerners and access to their privileges as powers, which in XIX century logic meant colonies, if not a whole empire of them, as a natural growth process. The traditional target of Japanese imperialism was always the Korean peninsula, but with its advanced navy Japan took on China and other neighbor territories in the Pacific. This Era started a gradual militarizing of the government that will culminate in a radical nationalism pushed to fascism by the beginning of the Second World War.
Japanese involvement in the region was always questioned by the other colonial powers. Which for the Japanese meant that Japan was never considered their equal, even after all its achievements. This, combined with a soaring nationalism and unrealistic ambitions of a radicalized military government pushed the country into isolation and catastrophic WW2 campaign, which ended in bombardment by atomic weapons.
Japan accepted US rule after the war. It was far less interventionist than expected, and aimed to demilitarize and democratize the country, but it still counted on the established political class, which guaranteed a sense of continuity amid the trauma of defeat. For the reconstruction of the economy, the war effort in the Korean war kickstarted the tremendous growth more than all reforms implemented by the Americans. Although its relationship with its pacific neighbors remained strained, the economic success provided new opportunities for regional influence.
The consequence of the WW2 generated deep issues in the perception of the Japanese state and society. If the US occupation ended far earlier than expected, Japan’s defense is still outsourced to the US. War reparations are not yet settled. It seems that the Japanese still struggle to make sense of what happened, and attitudes range from revisionist rewriting of History to pathologizing and victimization of the situation. Neighbors accuse Japan of not being sincere enough in its apologies and that they stem mainly out of a necessity of being politically correct. Its economic power is also seen as suspicious if not straight new imperialism. All of these questions fueled an intense debate, which is still ongoing by the early decades of the 21th century.

สนุกกก แต่ละประโยคมีอะไรให้ได้คิดตาม จุดประกายก่อเกิดคำถามอื่นๆ ได้มากมาย เอาแค่ประมาณว่า ความเป็นสมัยใหม่เป็นอย่างไร ก็พาไปถึงที่มาอย่าง

ชอบหลายๆ ส่วนในเล่ม บางบทน่าติดตามจนไม่ได้หยุดดูภาพประกอบ ต้องอ่านจนจบบทก่อน ภาษาที่ใช้ค่อนข้างวิชาการ เรียกร้องให้ใช้เวลาวิเคราะห์และคิดตามพอสมควร อ่านแล้วก็อยากหาเล่มที่พูดหรือวิเคราะห์อะไรทำนองนี้มาอ่านต่อ ตามที่คำนำผู้แปลบอก "แม้ข้อมูลจะไม่ลึกมาก แต่กระตุ้นต่อมได้ดีทีเดียวเชียว"

ชอบการเขียน ปวศ เเบบนี้ ที่ไม่ได้มาเเค่บอกเราว่าใครทำอะไรเวลาไหน เเต่บอกเราด้วยว่าเพราะอะไรเเละมีปัจจัยอะไรที่ส่งผลให้เกิดการกระทำนั้น
ตลอดประวัติศาสตร์ของญี่ปุ่นสมัยใหม่คือการต่อสู้ระหว่างความคิดสองความคิดเสมอมา คือ ความเป็นสมัยใหม่อย่างตะวันตก เเละอัตลักษณ์ความเป็นญี่ปุ่น สองสิ่งนี้ต่อสู้เเย่งชิงพื้นที่กันมานับตั้งเเต่พลจัตวาเพอร์รี่เอาเรือดำมาเทียบที่ญี่ปุ่นเเล้ว

อ่านแล้วก็คล้อยตามแฮะ ว่ายุคโตกุกาว่า ญี่ปุ่นเริ่มมีความเป็นสมัยใหม่แล้ว แต่เป็นสมัยใหม่ในทางการเมือง นั่นคือปกครองโดยโชกุน และมีจักพรรดิ์เป็นประมุข และระบอบโตกุกาว่าที่เป็นรัฐบาลทหาร ก็วางระเบียบการปกครองที่ล้ำกว่ายุคก่อนสมัยใหม่จริงๆ อย่างไรก็ตามในยุคนั้นรูปแบบของสังคมและเศรษฐกิจ ยังตามมาไม่ทัน

Christopher Goto-Jones has made a very intriguing read here. His book examines Japan through the last 400 or so years, and does a rather good job of explaining concisely the reason Japan is the way it is now, especially in regard to the ambiguity of its identity and of Japan's lack of purpose now that its drive to overtake the West has largely already happened.
This is not so much a book about where Japan is going in the future as it is a critical look at where she is now, and that is a very refreshing experience in a world where it seems every vision of today is clouded by a plethora of opinions about where it should be, where it will go, etc. Just for that alone, it deserves five stars, but I also awarded it five stars because the author really brings across the difference of Japan from the Western nations and its unique history even from other Asian nations.
This is not so much a book about where Japan is going in the future as it is a critical look at where she is now, and that is a very refreshing experience in a world where it seems every vision of today is clouded by a plethora of opinions about where it should be, where it will go, etc. Just for that alone, it deserves five stars, but I also awarded it five stars because the author really brings across the difference of Japan from the Western nations and its unique history even from other Asian nations.

This really readable, compressed overview of Japan from ancient times to the early 2000s provides multiple launch points for deeper study into the military, socioeconomic, geopolitical, religious, environmental, and social class hierarchy of this multifaceted culture.

Een interessante introductie in het onderwerp en vooral een aanzet tot verder lezen. Er worden een hoop onderwerpen behandeld maar niet alles wordt evenzeer geïntroduceerd of uitgediept. Desalniettemin een goed boek voor hen die geïnteresseerd zijn in Japan!

It's a nice length, all books should be this length. Takes you from the Tokugawa period to today. Glazed over towards the end with all psychobabble about the Japanese national consciousness. But I now feel historically clued up ready for my holiday.

Gayet iyi bir giriş kitabı. Yaptığı atıflar meraklı bir okur için yeni ve ileri okumaların yolunu açıyor. Bu tür modernite analizlerinde bir ulusal "psyche" anlatısı oluyor derinden derine illaki. Belki de olması gerekli zaten. Yine de beni pek sarmıyor. Biraz bu psyche anlatısına yaklaşıyor bu kitap da yer yer. Ama dediğim gibi, zaten olması gereken de bu biraz.

His ideology was that of the need to redefine Japanese history in entirely martial terms, through a return to a militarist Japan under the Emperor and the rejection of democracy. He committed sepukku or ritual suicide for he couldn't bear the break-neck modernisation and consequent commercialisation that destroyed the soul of what it meant to be Japanese. Or the case of the Nanjing Massare and Japan's half-hearted apologies for the horror of the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere, which sought Japan to paradoxically fly the imperial flag of the rising again across much of South-East Asia, in an attempt to fight Western Imperialism. Or the ubiquitous conflation of the samurai<\i> culture --- bushido<\i> with Japan, despite the dark turn of events that led to their disempowerment as a social class after the Meiji Restoration in 1868. The country remains such a mystery for its policy of complete isolation or sakoku<\i> before the landing of Commodore Perry, which forced open Japan to the West. The Yasukuni Jinja<\i> shrine still stirs up sentiments amongst Japanese polity for its association with freedom fighters who have also been variously termed as enemies of the state. The history of Japan is such a confusing paradox for its own people, that my Japanese friend cautioned me, "it's important to be critical when you read Japanese history in English. As most articles written in English might somewhat contain the Western<\i> point of view!" In sum, if you want to wrap your head around the geishas<\i>, the otaku<\i> culture (geeks glued to anime<\i>) and their fetish for high technology (and karaoke<\i> bars featuring skimpily-clad schoolgirls), this is a must-read!

I found this confusing at times, the book was separated in themes but the constantly switching from one point in time to another, back to the first, kept confusing me.
A good introduction though and there are definitely topics I would like to read up on a bit more.

In theory I love the whole idea of the A Very Short Introduction series, so it was time I finally read one. Since my husband is pretty interested in all things Japanese and has gotten me into some manga and anime, and everything else I know about Japan I learned from watching Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as a kid, I thought this would be a good book to pick up.
The book covers Japanese history from the arrival of Admiral Perry in 1853 to the current day, but also goes back to outline the Tokugawa Period which began in the 17th-century. Even when learning about parts of Japanese history I thought I knew somewhat well (WWII), I was surprised at how much I learned. I'm always asking my husband why the Japanese do X seemingly weird thing and his response is usually something along the lines of explaining that their cultural background is completely different from ours. Here I started to understand some of those differences. One of the main lessons Goto-Jones tries to get across in this book is that modern is not synonomous with Western and that while Japan is a thoroughly modern (or post-modern) culture, they are thoroughly Eastern, which can be further extrapolated to explain a lot about why Japan's modernity looks very different from Western modernity.
I liked it, but this is definitely not a stand-alone book. This seems like a really good supplemental book, perhaps for someone studying recent Japanese history or someone studying the Japanese language who wanted a clearer overview of Japanese history. With the supplemental nature of this book, I felt it would have been helpful to include a glossary in the back. Because everything was run through so quickly I often had trouble remembering important terms that popped up briefly in one chapter and then were brought up again a few chapters later with the assumption that the reader still remembered the term. I kept reading interesting sections and then being disappointed that there weren't more details to flesh out the rest of the story, so I may be spending some time with titles on the suggested reading list in the back. Definitely good for whetting my appetite.

I am a big fan of the VSI series by Oxford but admittedly it can be sometimes a bit hit and miss. The series often tries to achieve two things at the same time: Firstly, to provide an overview and introduction to a topic and secondly, to have eminent scholars of the field update that overview and to give a bit of a fresh perspective. Sometimes that can go awfully wrong with the scholar overly emphasising irrelevant academic details, while neglecting the task of giving a first rate introduction to the subject.
In this case however I had the feeling that the task was excellently executed. The author gives indeed a very well written account of Japanese history, describing the developments before Perry's arrival and the developments that followed it. In order to give the whole thing a fresh touch he looks and evaluates these historical developments taking the concept "modern" as a starting point. And this turns out to be incredibly fruitful (and at least in my case revising some preconceived ideas that I had about Japanese history). He illustrates to what extent Japan was already modern prior to Perry's arrival and how the dynamics between Japanese tradition and national consciousness and Western modern ideas play out and interact with the historical developments. Additionally, towards the end he also reflects on how these ideas are being picked up culturally in literature and film - which helps to connect Japanese history to other books one might have heard about (Murakami, Mishima, Banana, Oe etc.).
I thoroughly enjoyed this little book and can only recommend it to anyone with a cursory interest in Japan.

Most of the book is decent, however there are a couple of problems.
Despite basing the book around Japan’s interaction with the concept of modernity vs Westernization, the author does not give any real exploration of what that means. Obviously the book is limited for space, but an additional paragraph or two on top of their current explanation would have been welcome.
The author also seems to seriously underestimate rightwing historical revisionism as a political force in Japan. Part of that was due to the date of publication, but saying Abe Shinzo’s first resignation was proof there was no stomach for radical nationalist politics really underlined the author’s shortsightedness.
An updated version would definitely benefit from this hindsight of Abe as the longest serving prime minister in modern Japanese history.

After reading the book on China from the same series, my expectations for this one weren't high, but I was nicely surprised. The author manages to debate on modernity whilst still providing a clear historical introduction to Japan. The book could use a little update (it was written in 2009) and chapter 5 felt a bit rushed. It could also use a glossary because the use of original words was good, but slightly confusing to a new reader on the topic. I really enjoyed the way literature was included into the "debate."

A great read about Japan written by specialist.
I have been living in Japan for about 10 years now, and there are thing I never came to know until I read this book.
What is exactly to be modern? Since Japan is the first non-western nation to be modern, the unique experience of Japan in this regard is highly worth the investigation. I would recommend this book to arab intellectual to analyze this experience, since arab nations are in so much need to rapidly go along the modernization process.
Japan faced the struggle to define its identity while rapidly trying to modernize. How Japan changed from the Tokugawa period to Meiji restoration to war time to the present time is the main topic of this book while discussing this identity defining process.
While Japan was faced by western power, they developed this mentality that either you become an empire or a colony. I think this motivates Japan to push hard to be powerful not to be swallowed by western power. Needless to say that the spread of publication and journalism helps deliver intellectual ideas to the public.
I think though that this book take the western view, I felt that author might have given credit to U.S more than needed in supporting the modernization of Japan.
One big issue that has been discussed here is in some sense, some commentators think that Japan has a schizophrenic nature.
Japan miraculous economic development, not only resulted from the hard work of Japanese population but also the korean war next door provided a big opportunity to boost the economy of Japan. In addition, being an ally to the west, helped Japan to buy advanced technology instead of investing time and money in researching them.
Few points worth mentioning: The discrimination against asian people in Japan is an old thing and not only in the current present time.
Japan felt in the time of world war that it has been discriminated by the west even though it was a modern nation, but was not treated equally with other western nation. Specially after the ban of east asian nation from immigration to U.S.
The policy of U.S in Japan after occupation has significantly influenced by the fear that Japan might fall under communist influence so they supported Japan modernization the same as what they did in Germany for the same reason.
A final thought: I would think that it might be more of Japan interest to and China and South korea to have an alliance on the same path as EU. The conflict of interest that Japan and China have might not be beneficial to both of them.

Terribly written, with the glib say-what-you're-going-to-say structure, cod psychology and thoughtless overreach common in social theory.
No and no they don't. But he gives a brief and clear sketch from Edo to their World Cup; still helpful if you are a total novice like me. (Never knew the shogunate were the internationalists in the Meiji struggle!) Needless to say Goto-Jones is unable to step beyond C20th stereotypes - to note, for instance, that by time of writing Japan had likely stopped being the place the future happens first.

Título que cai muito bem na coleção Encyclopædia da L&PM Pocket pois é justamente um pequeno livro introdutório ao tema proposto.
O autor flui bem ao não carregar o texto com muitos nomes e datas e não deixar acadêmico demais. Mas também não deixa o livro parecer uma reportagem longa. Por ser professor pode ser uma adaptação bem sucedida de algum curso de iniciação à história do Japão.
Por focar na modernidade do país deixa de abordar a história pregressa que geralmente é a mais complicada de se entender (ao menos para mim). O livro só aborda rapidamente o regime Tokugawa para melhor compreensão da modernidade que viria a seguir.
A parte mais fascinante é como essa crise de identidade do Japão pós segunda guerra foi moldando a política, a cultura e a sociedade japonesa. Isso sem achar uma resolução, é uma procura ainda.

Overall a good read which gives a broad view of the recent history of Japan. However, the book does at times wander into the higher echelons of political philosophy, or indeed philosophy in general. To start Goto-Jones asks: what is modernity? Whilst this is a probably a relevant question, in a book which deliberately professes to be a 'very short history' I feel that he may have lost some pages agonising over this and as a result couldn't pay as much attention to some events or phenomena of modern Japanese history which maybe they deserve. There were a few passages where I just had to stop and re-read as the vocabulary was starting to escape me (what is 'political subjectivity' when it's at home?). Nonetheless, this is a good grounding in modern Japanese history and has encouraged me to read further in the field.

A decent book, but didn't hold my interest as much as Hane's Japan: A short history, which I recommend over this book.
A nitpick I have with this book over Hane's is that the author uses ô to represent the long vowels in Japanese over the more common ō: such as Tôkyô instead of Tōkyō. Sure, it's petty and I'm not marking the book points against it, but could the author really nit have either used the more standard ō, or ou, since these words cropped up several times per page?
