Family Study Bible Series: Proverbs

Family Bible Study Series: The Book of Proverbs - Book I: Proverbs 1-15

Rate this book
Of all of the possible curriculum choices used for the education of our children, the most important textbook of all is that which God Himself presented in the book of Proverbs. This book is the core curriculum. It is God's book on how to live life on planet earth. To disregard this book in the education of our children would be a colossal error.

With this Study Guide on the book of Proverbs, you will learn God's basic truths as they speak to the classical philosophical divisions of epistemology, metaphysics, and ethics. You will grapple with the tensions of determinism and human responsibility. You will find an entire system of priorities for life's ethics and purposes. You will find the basic constituents of a biblical social system, as well as principles for sound economics, government, and general business management. The book includes both a proper theology, anthropology, and human psychology. Every education program will give you a system of categories by which you understand life, history, truth, ethics, and reality. Some systems have a semblance of truth, but they are fundamentally compromised because they do not begin with the book of Proverbs or the fear of God (Prov. 1:7).

This study guide is the fruit of seven years of daily instruction in the book of Proverbs on the part of homeschooling father, pastor, and author, Kevin Swanson. Each lesson includes:

* A topical breakdown
* An exposition in the form of illustration and application
* And, penetrating, application-oriented questions to stimulate family discussions

These study guides had a really good set up, but the author really strayed from the text on multiple occasions. It seemed like he frequently had certain political/theological axes to grind and and that he used the text to support what he wanted to say rather than expositing the text and applying it to the family. I was disappointed with these studies, because Proverbs is such a rich book for the family to study. We will just read through a Proverb and I will teach my kids what it means instead.

Perfect for what it’s meant to be—a family study guide. Taking the opportunity to pre-read now, as the kids will be going through this series in middle school (homeschooling—isn’t it grand to carve your own educational plan?). No, the book didn’t stick EXACTLY and ONLY to a simplistic exegesis. Instead, it used the course of Proverbs to address some modern concerns through a Proverbs context. While some are a little disappointed with the “political” and theological statements made…I didn’t find anything that wasn’t consistent with good, systematic theology. Proverbs wasn’t meant to be a long-winded fortune cookie of “general”, untethered wisdom. It’s an assertion of the importance of Biblical wisdom, which means it should be reinforced through other Biblical doctrines and examples. Anything less is amorphous humanistic pseudo-discernment.

Went through this with my kids, overall I thought it was pretty solid. I've heard a lot of messages from Kevin Swanson and appreciate a lot of things that he has to say. My issue with this book is that in his messages and radio show he has certain talking points that he tends to go back to, and he does the same things here. There are a lot of Proverbs that are directly applicable to family life, but he will frequently use the commentary space to talk about why public schools are destructive. It's not on every one, but it's on more than I thought was helpful.
