Theodor W. Adorno (1903–1969) was one of the twentieth century’s most important thinkers. In light of two pivotal developments—the rise of fascism, which culminated in the Holocaust, and the standardization of popular culture as a commodity indispensable to contemporary capitalism—Adorno sought to evaluate and synthesize the essential insights of Western philosophy by revisiting the ethical and sociological arguments of his Kant, Nietzsche, Hegel, and Marx. This book, first published in Germany in 1996, provides a succinct introduction to Adorno’s challenging and far-reaching thought. Gerhard Schweppenhäuser, a leading authority on the Frankfurt School of critical theory, explains Adorno’s epistemology, social and political philosophy, aesthetics, and theory of culture.After providing a brief overview of Adorno’s life, Schweppenhäuser turns to the theorist’s core philosophical concepts, including post-Kantian critique, determinate negation, and the primacy of the object, as well as his view of the Enlightenment as a code for world domination, his diagnosis of modern mass culture as a program of social control, and his understanding of modernist aesthetics as a challenge to conceive an alternative politics. Along the way, Schweppenhäuser illuminates the works widely considered Adorno’s most important Minima Moralia, Dialectic of Enlightenment (co-authored with Horkheimer), and Negative Dialectics. Adorno wrote much of the first two of these during his years in California (1938–49), where he lived near Arnold Schoenberg and Thomas Mann, whom he assisted with the musical aesthetics at the center of Mann’s novel Doctor Faustus.

Schweppenhäuser beginnt passend mit Adornos Kritik an Aktionismus und dem Drang nach konstruktiver Kritik und entlarvt ihn als Immunisierungsstrategie gegen Gesellschaftskritik. Diese Kritik als bestimmte Negation der bestehenden Negativität sei allerdings das Einzige, das dem Individuum Trost spenden könne.

Eine grundlegende Einsicht Adornos, an der es zeitgenössischer Gesellschaftstheorie oft mangelt, ist, dass es keine struktjurelle Erkenntnis ohne einen kritischen Begriff von Totalität geben kann. Dieser ist nicht der Empirie zu entnehmen. Vielmehr sei ausgehend von gesellschaftlichen Phänomenen auf die Erkenntnis der Struktur der Totalität zu zielen. Damit einher geht die Unterscheidung zwischen Erscheinung und Wesen als notwendige Bedingung von Kritik.

Es folgen einige Erläuterungen zur Dialektik der Aufklärung und Schweppenhäuser stellt in dem Zusammenhang den kulturindustriell erzeugten Schein heraus, dass nichts anderes bestehen könnte und das gesellschaftliche Ganze ein Naturverhältnis sei. Generell laden die zitierten Passagen verschiedener Werke dazu ein, sie im Kontext des gesamten jeweiligen Werks zu lesen. Den Fokus legt Schweppenhäuser neben der Dialektik der Aufklärung auf die Ästhetische Theorie, Negative Dialektik, Minima Moralia und die soziologischen Schriften Adornos.

Wie passend die Einführung insgesamt ist, lässt sich aber nur sagen, wenn man über das Werk Adornos im Ganzen Bescheid weiß, was üblicherweise nicht der Fall ist, wenn man ein Einführungsbuch liest.

quite a succinct, unpretentious and – i daresay – accessible intro to adorno's thought, which i am now better able to see as a constellation. but the hair-splitting & abstract philosophising between white men of the german intellectual tradition is extremely tiresome. i'm still not sure how i feel about adorno's theories on aesthetics, and there's a point at which i want to stop reading about the destructive effects of the mass culture industry and his (to me quite snobbish?) dismissals of the cultural commodities produced within its logics (call it ideology, false consciousness, whatever, pls just talk abt smth else). the bits about historical & political orientations (and praxes) were more appealing to me

always when I read stuff from the Frankfurt Schule I feel like it's either nonsense, I'm missing the point (lack the intelligence to comprehend it), but it's nonetheless satisfying to read.
