Nick Tanner set out months ago to find the Umani, Earth's only hope for salvation. Reaching Raxo brought revelations he still cannot wrap his head around, and now he's on his way home. But things aren't the same. Not by a long shot.
Michael Tanner has struggled since his rescue from New Mexico to find his place in his new world. He still questions his past, his existence, and the man he is becoming. He has also found a kind of love like no other -- a father's love. His childhood was nothing but pain. Can he be a good father?
Jacqueline Anderson challenges him, move him, confuses him. She wants more from him, more than he knows how to give. She wants to understand the haunting shadows behind his eyes... wants to understand the scars that mark his body.
The battle to survive comes to a crescendo, and Michael will finally discover the man he is meant to be.
It's been awhile since I've experienced a writer eliciting such a raw, genuine emotional response. I read A LOT, too. Yes, most of the time I enjoy my time as someone looking in on the lives of the characters in the books I read. I even experience what I call "book hangover" where I miss the characters in the books I read as soon as I read the last line of the book. It's truly rare that I'm so enthralled by such deep, rich character development that I wish I could live IN the book, & KNOW these characters in person. That is what Gail R Delaney has done for me as a reader throughout the entire Phoenix Rebellion series. I didn't realize until I read these books that something in me REALLY needed that type of connection, even if just with fictitious people...
I devoured the last book in this series. It is a wonderful wrap up. Such a satisfying end. I have a connection to the characters. I care about the world. It was fantastic. I cannot wait to get my hands on the next series!
The final book in the Phoenix Rebellion does not disappoint. I cried, I was angry, and on the edge of my seat. Ms Delaney drops bits of 20th Century pop culture into the story the made me smile. This series was my first time delving fully into sci fi/ rom and I’m now a convert.
Delaney crafts a compelling finish to "The Phoenix Rebellion" with "End Game." This final installment focuses on the romance between Michael and Jackie. It is 2053 and the Soracchi have scorched the Earth, killing a majority of the population, keeping a handful of humans for their biological experiments. Will hope arrive in time?
"End Game" grabs the reader's attention with a heart-pounding chase. The Soracchi are after Phoenix operative, Jackie Anderson. Jackie, bone-tired and weary, jumps into the Charles River, in Boston, to get away. She makes her way to the Phoenix base in Tennessee where Michael and Lilly discover one of her ovaries missing. Slowly, Jackie begins to recover.
Col. Nick Tanner, Michael's father, returns with Areth and Umani scout ships. They have pledged their help to rid the Earth of the Soracchi. He has a sweet reunion with CJ and the couple wed.
With the help of the Areth's medical technology, the doctors determine that the Soracchi imprint in Victor is weak. They offer to help Victor rid himself of his Soracchi parasite. Victor agrees to the dangerous procedure. The Areth also offer to give Beverly her hearing back.
Michael and Jackie grow close during her recovery. Jackie accepts Michael for who he is, and the couple make love. Shortly afterwards, the Soracchi attack and take Michael captive. Nick sends a message to the Areth and Umani armadas enroute. The armadas move with haste to arrive at Earth, but is it too late to save Michael?
Delaney's writing is sharp, giving subtle clues and hints along the way as to extend of Michael's abilities. The plot flows nicely. The pacing is "spot on," slowing in the right places for the reader to get a breath before picking up again. The dialogue is realistic. Delany uses just the right amount of words to paint her futuristic world without weighing down the narrative. Delaney strikes a nice flow with her action sequences, painting vivid scenes in the reader's mind.
Michael and Jackie are interesting characters that prove opposites attract. Michael is quiet and tends to hold things in. Jackie is outgoing and speaks her mind. The supporting cast complements the story well. Readers are rewarded with Nick and CJ's reunion. The Areth give Victor and Beverly new hope.
"End Game" is sophisticated for CRR readers. Delaney's love scenes are tender and sensual, capturing the warm glow of love. The novel captures a gambit of emotions - hope, love, courage, fear, and delivers a rewarding finale to The Phoenix Rebellion series.
This entire series captivated my imagination and attention from the opening page. The characters are real, sometimes raw with past pain, but overcome betrayal and anguish to find and live their lives of freedom and freedome fighters within a world under seige to a brutal species. The romance is woven into this story with skill and beauty. Read them all! One leads to the next and you won't want to stop so you should download them all right away!
