Δεν πρόκειται για την πιο συναρπαστική περιπέτεια του Έκτορ Μπελασκοαράν αλλά η κάπνα από τα Δελικάδος σε συνδυασμό με το κοφτερό χιούμορ και την χαλαρή αποστασιοποίηση του ντετέκτιβ είναι από μόνοι τους αρκετοί λόγοι για να φτάσεις ως το τέλος της διαδρομής χαμογελώντας πονηρά!

Στα Όνειρα Συνόρων ο Πάκο Ιγκνάσιο Τάιμπο ΙΙ βγάζει τον ντετέκτιβ του, Έκτορ Μπελασκοαράν Σάυν, έξω από τα νερά του, μακριά από την αγαπημένη του Πόλη του Μεξικού, και τον φέρνει στη βόρεια μεθόριο ΗΠΑ-Μεξικού για να αναζητήσει μια παλιά του φίλη (και ερωτικό του απωθημένο) για λογαριασμό της 15χρονης κόρης της. Από βιβλίο σε βιβλίο η γραφή του Τάιμπο ΙΙ γίνεται όλο και πιο αφαιρετική, πιο πυκνή, πιο κινηματογραφική, αλλά και πιο διεισδυτική και εύστοχη, ενώ ο ήρωάς του μοιάζει να ωριμάζει μαζί του, όχι βέβαια χωρίς τα αναπόφευκτα πισωγυρίσματα ενός καταραμένου τύπου με βεβαρυμένο παρελθόν. Το κομμάτι της εξιχνίασης του μυστηρίου από την άλλη, υποχωρεί όλο και περισσότερο σε έναν κόσμο όπου το ζητούμενο για όσους επιδίδονται σε εγκληματικές δραστηριότητες δεν είναι να τις κρύψουν, αλλά απλώς να μην πιαστούν στα πράσα.

Héctor Belascoarán Shayne, incendiario profesional, detective independiente con agenda política, seductor de mujeres del pasado, vengador de parias, mineros y prostitutas de Zacatecas, ojalá jamás se acabaran sus aventuras. Desgraciadamente creo que la trama sólo fue un apresurado pretexto para hacer pasear al legendario justiciero por el mayor número posible de ciudades fronterizas, sin mucho sentido o interés, pero nada como tener el gustazo de ver al detective destruir al mundo de nuevo. Esta Paco Ignacio Taibo II-manía que me llegó de alguna parte no cede por el momento.

Dentro de la historia de un amor de juventud, se dan pinceladas de la cruda y dura realidad de la frontera norte de México, con el puntilleante humor negro de Paco Ignacio, basado en datos históricos se desarrolla esta búsqueda de un posible final feliz. Una lectura que al menos deja un sabor menos doloroso de las tragedias humanas en esos lugares.

Funny and entertaining. I enjoyed the examination of the membranous region where time, memory, feeling, identity, and place all seem diffuse and unfixed. Anything is possible but not quite real. And what does it mean having happened there and nowhere else?

I love reading literature that crosses genres and captures some of the history of living on the border. This story was quirky in the best kind of way. A crime mystery that was easy to slip into. It's edgy with the language and harsh characters. But the edginess added to the reality of drug lords, corrupt policemen, and Hector-the detective.

Considero que estos últimos libros de la serie se vuelven cada vez más predecibles y simplones. Se nota desde el momento en que son historias cortas de 90 páginas. Belascoarán va perdiendo intensidad y se vuelve un personaje que sufre ser protagonista de historias tan aburridas. El personaje pierde propósito, no tiene motivaciones para seguir siendo lo que es, salvo el interés de Paco Ignacio de seguir haciendo libros de la serie. He leído estas últimas entregas solo por completar la serie de Belascoarán, pero ya sin motivación.

me sigue gustando, pero se ha vuelto flojo, ¿qué pasó con el hombre asesinado en el aeropuerto? ¿quién era? ¿qué tenia que ver en el asunto? ¿quién lo asesino? ¿porqué?; simple y sencillamente se le olvido que había matado a un personaje y siguió adelante, además el final esta copiado de "Cosa Fácil"

Frontera Dreams: A Héctor Belascoarán Shayne is the 2002 translation by Bill Verner of Paco Ignacio Taibo II's 1990 novel Sueños de frontera, una novela de Belascoarán; it's the seventh in the series. This time, Hector is out of the city and following an old girl friend who is nowadays an actress on a Mexican soap opera, and she has fled from Mexico City to the border with the United States. The actress daughter has asked for the detective's help because she believes that her mom is being stalk by a dangerous malvado. As Hector follows his old love, he remembers his life in high school as well observe life on the border-life on the edge.

Taibo is an excellent observer of the social, political and economic environment in Mexico. Reading Frontera Dreams is like looking at a photograph of the Mexican side of the border in 1990. This is excellent and realistic detective fiction at its best. Included in this volume is addition information that fans of Taibo and Hector will find especially interesting.

You might have a problem finding a paper copy. Presently the only thing available at Barnes & Nobles are nook books in this series. Amazon is not much better. One place you might find a hard copy is at the Poisoned Pen Press in Scottsdale, Arizona; their website is www.poisonedpenpress.com. Enjoy.

I am so glad I picked up this book! This is actually the seventh book in the series, the fifth that's been translated into English, but there's a hugely informative essay at the beginning that fills the reader in on what went before. You need to know that Héctor has a body "impervious to wounds", that he was killed and resurrected.

When Héctor was a teenager, he had a sweetheart. Now she's a famous movie star, except that she's disappeared, and his daughter comes asking him to find her. This is about the literal frontera, the U.S.-Mexico border, but also the borders of reality and dreams, past and present and future, who we are and who we were and who we want to be. There are whores and narcotrafficantes, people who still have dreams and people whose dreams have died.

It's too bad that not all of Taibo's books have been translated, but you can bet I'll look for the rest that have been.

He learns that her life is in danger sending her fleeing across the border and then back into Mexico. Along the way, Detective Hector interacts with interesting characters who teach us about the legend of Pancho Villa, the corrupt business of narcotraficantes, and even the plight of a village that loses all its whores in one night only to get them back six months later with stories to tell. Unfortunately for Hector, his movie star love vanishes. This book has an Alfred Hitchcock “Psycho” feel to it and is part of a series of “Detective Hector Belascoarán Shayne” novels. (Elvira, C-D)

The "new version" of Belascoarán Shayne, now moved to 1989, continues with a very different story. In this case, he heads for the northern border to find an actress who is missing, who was a high school friend of his. Her daughter asked Héctor to find her. Almost nothing really "happens" in this novel. It's hardly even a detective story. But PIT II's style sucked me in all the same. You know, in the mid-late 20th century we learned about Latin=American "Magical Realism". PIT II is almost the opposite... it's more "Realistic Magic" because all his plots and situations are so improbable, yet played out so naturally. I'm not sure this volume is quite up to the level of the last couple of books, but I still have to give it a top rating. PIT II is a fine writer. Just a couple more to go in the series!!!

PIT II y otra del emblemático Belascoarán Shayne

A mi la narración y ese humor obscuro, negro y sórdido que Paco Igacio Taibo II, le imprime a sus narraciones, me parece fabuloso, único y refrescante, es como si le estuvieras escuchando de voz propia del autor, es una de mi series favoritas, y tal vez el responsable de que me guste el genero Neo policiaco.

En particular este relato, lo he leído después de mucho tiempo de haber leído el anterior, hace no menos de 11 años, pero el personaje y sus situaciones, son como llegar a casa, es como leer de y gran amigo, sin embargo este relato es diferente a los anteriores. Se podría decir que soy un gran fan de esta serie.

The one-eyed detective finally catches up with a Mexican actress on the run from drug-dealers and stalkers, a girl he has loved since the first glance of a inside of a stocking in school twenty years ago showing us how nothing ever stays the same and is never quite what you thought it was in the first place.

Decepcionante. Después del ingenio de Cosa Fácil, este es un libro policiaco común y corriente al que le faltan momentos de comicidad, ironia y personajes divertidos. Incluso Belascoarán parece haber perdido mucho de su fuego. Es un caso más para Belascoarán, pero en ningún momento parece ser una de esas historias que lo definen como personaje.

Mal sitio elegí para comenzar a leer las aventuras de Belascoarán. Es un libro breve, pero aún así me sentí perdido sin haber leído los anteriores. Supongo que es como leerse el último de Harry Potter sin conocer los previos ni haber visto las películas.

Por lo pronto, dejo mi comentario en suspenso. Buscaré las otras novelas de la serie y regresaré para hacer una reseña con más sentido. Qué vergüenza de mí.

Sueños de Frontera
Belascoaran se pasea por varias ciudades de la frontera norte mientras, busca, encuentra y se le escapa, una antigua compañera de prepa, que le mandaron encontrar. Las pequeñas historias ya sea de las ciudades donde anda, o de la prepa de Belascoaran le agregan un mínimo de color a una novela que se siente un tanto entre floja y apresurada, y como la anterior demasiado corta.

Otro libro breve pero cargado de comentarios políticos, esencia noir y pulp y escenarios entrañables. Esta vez el autor mueve a Hector a Tijuana y a varias ciudades de la frontera para buscar a su ex amor de la prepa. Este libro está cargado con esa melancolía y tiene una escena que me gustó mucho sobre reencontrarse con el pasado.
El caso es más sencillo que libros anteriores pero no pierde la esencia de esta serie. El final cierra muy bien la historia con un guiño al principio.

I'm a Paco Taibo fan. When I have been in Mexico City I've even sought out places in his novels, but this is my least favorite of his books. It's too sketchy, reads as if he wrote it to a deadline, with little of the detail and wit that keeps me entranced with his other novels featuring H. Belascoaran Shayne and his officemates.
