It's an amazing start for a series! Midnight Restaurant is constructed by a series of short stories (usually with the length of 10 pages), each of these stories reveal a story about one customer who visited the restaurant, this setting doesn't sound anything so special, right?

However, the author made his series memorable and outstanding among so many other manga series with similar themes by putting his insight on human nature and emotion, and his sense of humor into good use. I really want to watch the TV series based on the manga as well!

This was so damn sweet. I picked it up after watching the Netflix series based on it, and man... the comic is so much better.

I've never seen such stark, lovely depictions of the lesser-known communities of Japan. This book talks about snack bar mama's and erotic film stars and strippers with the same sort of affection it uses toward struggling enka singers and boxers. There's even an openly trans character in it! And the man that loves her barely blinked when they told him she was trans. It's just so lovely to see these sweet little vignettes about all of the people who are up between the shop's hours of midnight and seven am.

Even if this manga does make me crave Japanese food like nobody's business.

I read the Chinese version because I am learning Chinese. It’s a bit complicated for a beginner like me but great to see how Chinese is used in real conversations and learn some new words, especially about food. The stories themselves are humorous with a twist in the end. Will definitely start reading the next volumes.

A thoughtful, compassionate, and humorous manga series explore the relationship between comfort foods, memories, and emotions. A diner in central Tokyo is open from midnight to 7a. You can imagine the outsiders (yakuza, strippers), quirky regulars who would gather there. The manga is narrated from the perspective of the chef/proprietor who knows his customers really well. Often an epic lifetime is explored through a dish within one chapter. The art is simple, elegant, and effective.

I’ve watched the live action TV series and read the manga (in Chinese translation), and they both make me laugh and sometimes move me to tears. I’m always hungry for JP comfort food and for the next volume after reading or watching.

Check out the Netflix series. The TV show’s writing has more drama and complexity than the manga. Both warm your heart (and stomach).

Love the TV show adaptation of this and only just realized it was based on a comic. The stories contained here are much less fleshed out, but when read together allow for a large tapestry of their own. The art was hard for me to acclimate to for a while, but it does have its own stylized charm. It was interesting here recognizing some of the stories from the show and not recognizing others, and seeing how that affected my ability to understand what was happening.

This one has too many stories for me to do my usual thing of explaining everything that happened, but I’ll say I feel I did pretty good. Some of the moments of wordplay were majorly lost on me, and there were one or two entire issues where I only barely scraped by, but the majority of the time I was laughing and crying along with the characters. Very excited to read the next volume!

The art was not very pretty but the stories (and the food!) more than made up for it. It talks about the people working in mizu shobai , a traditional word for the nighttime entertainment business, and it did so in a very humanizing way.

The other day I came across the Chinese drama adaptation in youtube (it was titled Midnight Diner), sadly only the first three episodes have english sub but I don't regret watching it. It was a beautiful drama. I also heard there was a Netflix (Korean?) adaptation so I will be looking forward to that as well.

In a very unassuming manga, Abe has written some of the finest short stories in contemporary Japanese literature. If you enjoyed Will Eisner's Tenement Stories, there is no question that you will also enjoy Shinya Shokudou.

What a wonderful treat after watching the Midnight Diner anthology. Slice-of-life easy reading before bed. Food porn to boot. Almost therapeutic, I'd say.

Shinya Shokudo or 심야식당 in Korean is a clever, tightly written slice-of-life manga. Each story revolves around the same late night eatery in a red light district of Tokyo. Each episode introduces a new character and a small part of their life as some problem they're facing unravels through dialogue with the restaurant's patrons and the narration of the chef (the only persistent character in the book).

I'll admit the art style took a while to get used to. It doesn't have the typical sharp lines and deeply contrasted shading of other titles but eventually I found it really suited the tone of the book. It's more gentle, loose and flowing much like the narrative itself.

Great book for some easy, relaxing reading that still has plenty of humanity and warmth to keep on flipping pages.

I'd also recommend using this as a study tool to anyone studying Japanese or Korean since the vocabulary and grammar aren't too complex.

Read English translations of Shinya shokudō/Midnight Diner volumes (1-4) online (w11.mangafreak.net) after enjoying episodes of the Netflix series. I love this anthology series and the glimpses it provides into Japan in particular and humanity in general. The online manga translation is nicely done, with enlightening notes not just on the comfort food dish at the center of each chapter, but other related cultural and linguistic aspects. Given the success of the series, it seems likely there will soon be published English versions of the manga on which it's based. Also eager to see the 2014 and 2017 movie versions.
"When people finish their day and hurry home, my day starts. My diner is open from midnight to seven in the morning. They call it 'Midnight Diner'. That's all I have on my menu. But I make whatever customers request as long as I have the ingredients for it. That's my policy. Do I even have customers? More than you would expect."

I did not know Midnight Diner was a manga originally. I shouldn't have been surprised though. I saw these understated books in the manga section at a Kinokuniya last year and was intrigued. When I searched for food related manga I realized those books were Midnight Diner volumes. I immediately had to read at least one volume. I enjoyed this manga quite a bit. I love reading mangas about food and what they mean to people. And the Japanese seem to be good at putting those emotions on paper. Though I have watched the series and the movies there were a few stories on this volume that were not in the adaptations which felt like a bonus for me. I think I am going to read more of this manga as the year goes on. And maybe try and find others like it too.

Bellissima scoperta.

I got here from a low key Netflix show based on this low key comic. Stories from an Izakaya based in Shinjuku. A diverse group of people meet and eat at night, you learn their stories. Canterbury tales or Candide comes to mind... I wonder how many collections of stories as told around a camp fire exist in eastern lit.

Unique stories that focus on small details. Day in the life.

The late-night canteen is a small dining hall in Japan that is only open from 12 o'clock to 7 o'clock in the night. The boss inside is quite boring in this set of comics. Some of them are cute, what do you want to eat, tell the boss, as long as the boss is in the store With these ingredients, he will do it for you.I watch all the comic of this book I like a lot.

I found an english translation of this online. This manga was the inspiration for Midnight Diner (a japanese tv show on Netflix that I have been DEVOURING, pun intended). The show is almost an exact copy of the manga; from the storylines, to the characters, to the dishes they cook. Absolutely wonderful. :)
