Humans are taught that they’re alone in the Universe. That’s a lie!
When our ancestors realized their planet was dying, they evacuated to find new homes throughout the Universe. Eidrona and Earth were among those new home planets. Each group of settlers developed differently according to their new environment but most of us Descendants of Doom still have similar features. With humans being less technologically advanced than the rest of us and unable to defend themselves, Earth is classified as a protected planet. That makes it a desired place to visit.
Malliko, a speciologist from Eidrona gets the rare chance to study the fascinating humans. His assignment is to research how dating and breeding habits have changed since the last report was made by the Federation. He's eager to find out if the many rumors about humans are true. Do humans hold the greatest range of emotions among the descendants of doom? And is it really true that they lost the ability to communicate through telepathy? When interviewing Clara, a human woman who works as a moderator on a dating app, Malliko sees an opportunity to do some field research and makes her an offer.
Screwed over by her ex, Clara lost her trust in men and hasn’t dated for years. Longing to be brave and try new things, she embarks on a journey of self-discovery that is long overdue. Never could she imagine that the tall and handsome man whom she's beginning to trust hides the biggest lie of all. He's not even human.

Whether Elin Peer writes about Cult, Sci-fi, Fantasy or other genres, she captures the reader so that you just want to turn the next page and read more. This first book in her new series "Descendants of Doom" did not grab me at first like the other genres, but the more pages were read, the more I fell for the characters in the book. She almost always manages to hit my entire emotional register, and she did that this time too. Whether there are creatures outside the Earth, well, we don't know... Some believe in it and others don't, but no matter if there are, Elin Peer has once again outdone herself.
What a unique idea for a story. Aliens studying our sexuality. I can already tell this series is gonna be so different and amazing. This author is famous for her wonderful writing that is not like anything else you’ve ever read.
Speciology!
Malliko has been sent to Earth to study human sexual habits. He’s sent to talk to Clara who works for a dating site but he ends up more interested in her than in other people on the site and some of there craziness.
Clara has had a bad marriage where she was used and discarded. She doesn’t trust men anymore after what she’s left bed and seen.
Trying to bring her out of her long funk Malliko offers to help her.
“Everything is different with you. Better.”
“The way you see me has changed the way I see myself. You came into my life and looked at me as if I was special.” “You are special.”
This was a bit different but also not so different if that makes any sense at all lol, this switched up Elins normal a little bit but Malliko and Claras attraction which they both wasn’t necessarily allowed or in a way that would work for them but they also knew this was foreign territory so there was so many what ifs.
Elin Peer's Malliko is a stellar start to her new sci-fi romance series, Descendants of Doom. As is characteristic of Peer's work, the novel immediately immerses the reader in a creative world with great world building, offering a welcome escape from our own.
The plot features an intriguing premise that keeps you guessing, avoiding the predictability trap. Malliko, an alien from a mythical planet, arrives on Earth on a mission to study the "dating and breeding habits" of humans. He meets Clara, a woman disillusioned by men, and what unfolds is a delightful journey of trust, discovery, and unexpected romance. Getting to know Clara and Malliko was a pleasure; their chemistry is palpable and their individual stories are compelling.
Above all, this book shines as a true sci-fi romance. For readers who, like me, find their best escape in alien worlds and life, Malliko delivers. It successfully blends the allure of extraterrestrial intrigue with a heartfelt, engaging human-alien love story.
A Note on the Audiobook:
While the story is excellent, potential listeners should be aware that the audiobook included with the Kindle edition features a virtual voice sample rather than a human narrator. This monotone delivery may be less appealing than a professional narration. If you're short on time and want to get the story, you might be able to tolerate the virtual voice, but the experience would have been much more immersive and enjoyable with human narrators.
If you enjoy thought-provoking, entertaining sci-fi romance that is rich with world-building and unpredictable twists, pick up Malliko (Descendants of Doom Book 1) by Elin Peer
With a series name like ‘Descendants of Doom’ and its cover I’m expecting a high action/highly sexy sci-fi but this book is more like a modge-podge of women’s fic, some romance and a weird tangle of questionable sci-fi with fairly low drama or angst - other than the self-esteem destroyer her previous marriage was.
This book - in the first few pages - refers to the solar system as a galaxy and our galaxy as the universe which is a glaring mistake I’ve seen in sci-fi romance a couple times already and is usually a sure sign of very poor world building/research in this genre. We don’t need much science really, this is primarily a romance after all, but the simple foundation needs to be fact based so we believe all the science fiction stuff in the world building. Later in the book when star systems, galaxies and universes are brought up - it was correct, so perhaps a typo or translation error?
Surprisingly this book went on to explore psychology, sexology and various extrasensory ideas in an early chapter which turned my opinion around briefly on some of the research aspects. Then again, each alien species is described as a stereotypical monolith with negative and positive personality quirks/characteristics pigeon-holed to the race. And, at one point in the book, the male lead gets a telepathic phone call from his mom somewhere in the universe so… we are all over the place here.
An interesting thought experiment the author lays out: “understand it’s part of the agreement for anyone who reincarnates to planet Earth. The ego’s purpose is to give the illusion that we’re separate individuals instead of one.” I do like it when a fiction book makes me think outside of the characters in the story. But it was very disjointed with practical and perceptive bits and bobs of psychology and philosophy lightly sprinkled in as the friendship very slowly grows between the two leads but still lacks emotional/romantic depth that doesn’t really go anywhere until 75% in. But at this point the sci-fi, friendships and the romance amped up and it finally became a page turner for me.
So, mixed bag overall. But I’m glad to have read it.
No attacking plants on Earth I enjoyed the author’s ‘Orenda’ series and have yet to start ‘Men of the North’. I saw this book and just had to grab it. Started writing my review on the second page and have only finished the first chapter! If that isn’t proof that I’m enjoying this, then I don’t know what is. Oh, one of the main characters’ names is Tania (correctly spelled, of course!).
The author poses some very thought-provoking questions: - How has technology changed the dating habits of humans? - How is the raised awareness of the collective affecting the balance between the genders? - Does human sexuality change when procreation is no longer the goal
As a NeuroDivergent who thrives in my curvilinear thinking, I’ll agree with the author on the below line. Because the Neurotypicals think in a line and therefore expect others to adhere to their one way of processing (A to B to C to D as opposed to A to D to H then back to the NT’s at D). ‘You’ll also need to respect that humans adhere to a perception that time is linear.’
As a native of The OC, the author is spot on about L.A.: ‘In our experience, hardly anyone questions strange behavior.’
Fave quote: ‘You can’t judge all humans based on a few weirdos.’
I’m not sure if this is an exercise in psychology, an exploration of sex therapy, or a study of cultural anthropology. For me, I’m counting it as Satire on my reading challenge list. I was crackin’ up the entire time!
Malliko is an alien sent to Earth to study Human Sexuality he is required to keep quite about who he really is because it seems that humans do not believe that aliens exist so there are serious rules to be followed. Tania is there to help him with a place to stay and what he can and cannot do as well as any questions he might have, Malliko notices that she has a serious attitude that he feels effects her in a negative way but he makes the best of the situation. His job will be to work with the Go2Match agency he will be working with a moderator by the name of Clara she is very attractive and with an attitude about men also but she explains to him what she does and what happens within the company and what she does he has many questions. Clara is a divorcee' with two boys who live with their father after all she did to put her husband through college and law school he left her. Malliko makes her think about how handsome her new co-worker is, but every woman they came in contact with seemed to try and get his attention and hold it but he seem to have eyes for only Clara, soon they become close and it surprises them both but he knows that he cannot have a true relationship with Clara without permission so he tries to help Clara meet someone she would want to date and maybe have sex with. A delightful story line and the characters are entertaining. I read a copy via BookFunnel without obligation. I volunteered an honest review.

Will their differences doom them to a life apart …
It has been a while since I have read the author, I was until the three generations awaiting religiously everyone of her new release, alas my reading schedule became so erratic with new arcs piling up after one another I was just able to add them to my shelves without a moment to read them. So when the opportunity came to be able to read this first in a new series, I could not let it pass.
Instead of an anticipation romance, it is an uchronia, what if humans were the offsprings of a branch of aliens, but unaware of it. So compared to how the other progeny evolved, humanity is far behind, still at war between themselves, and very behind in technology terms. Why an aliens consortium has placed Earth under its protection and humans are an object of curiosity by having grow slower and differently than the other descendants. Malliko, as an ex soldier turned as a sort of anthropologist, is send on Earth undercover, to observe this specie that reacts so differently from his own or their “cousins”. Clara is his first human contact, and in some way becomes his study subject. With her past and her insights of the online dating world, she is a source of knowledge for Malliko, why he is intrigued by her relevant opinions in term of sexuality and her own struggles with the opposite sex as she is still wary from her failed marriage.
This was entertaining to follow the quiet tempered well-balanced Malliko prodding insecure but open Clara for informations about feelings he believes his breed is immune to. As he learns the complexity of the human heart and mind, but his openmindness helps Clara to see past her fears and anxiety when she makes him realize the Earth inhabitants might lack in advance technology yet the wild range of their emotions shows them as more than the primitive creatures they are believed to be.
So as Malliko and Clara explore the ins and outs of their burgeoning attraction, they learn about their differences, similarities and diverging or even views on matter of chemistry, fulfillment and love. As there are more against them than Clara’s vulnerability, them being together is not even allowed as Aliens do not exist in Clara’s world. 4 stars
𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 onscreen foreplays and lovemaking scenes
I have been granted an advance copy by the author, here is my true and unbiased opinion.
I give this four stars only because it is so slow moving. Malliko is an Eidron speciologist who goes to Earth to study dating and sexuality. Earth is considered a protected planet because of the common belief that humans are alone in the universe. It has been awhile since an in-depth study of human sexual habits was done and recent observations have noted changes. Malliko is cautioned to refrain from becoming sexually involved with humans.
Clara is a divorced woman with twin sons who live with their father and his new wife. She moved to LA to be close to her boys but she hardly gets to see them. She is bitter that she gave up her her dreams of college when she got pregnant as a teen. She worked several jobs to put her husband through law school and then he dumped her for a younger woman and took the kids, leaving her with no money and no real prospects. She works at an on-line dating company. Her job is to look at complaints filed by users or site monitors and determine if rules have been broken that require action be taken. She had been assigned to assist Malliko in his research for his PhD dissertation on human dating habits.
I don't want to ruin the story for you so I will just say that Malliko offers to help Clara get herself back out into the dating world. He poses as her boyfriend in their 'open relationship' that is there to keep her safe while allowing her to explore her sexuality. Unfortunately, Clara is most comfortable with Malliko and he can't tell her the truth about who he really is. You can probably see where this is heading...
I was given an advanced copy of this book by the author. My review is voluntary.
This is the first book in a sci-fi romance series.
It has a slow start. As you progress with reading the story, it does more interesting. We were indoctrinated to believe there are no other species in the world. We have a solar system that there has not been much exploration done to date. What if? The author has delved into this by creating a world that is so far advanced and the inhabitants are human descendants.
Each culture has its own beliefs and how they interact. Malliko is sent to earth to study human sexuality. Why? Earth people have feelings, cry a lot, and are backward. Eidrons don't.
Is there still some form of humanity embedded into Eidrons? Malliko meets Clara as she is the expert on dating. She works for an online dating company. As the story unfolds, Clara opens up to Malliko and he shows her that she is not second best. Malliko is forbidden to have sex with a female from Earth as his superiors don't want a mixed child to be born.
The agent who hosts Eidrons sent to Earth, Tania, who is a mixed child, interferes with the closeness between Malliko and Clara. There is considerable fallout.
Malliko and Clara fall in love but there are serious consequences.
This story is an interesting concept and I look forward to reading the next book in this series.
Why is the title of the second book Sival ?! That's the name of the alien kidnapper of the woman this book will be about ! I can't believe the author would make a romance btw a victim of mind control, forced breeding and stolen babies with her perpetrator ! I feel nauseated at the idea. I wondered why there s mention in Malliko of an alien belief that human women fell in love with the men who take their virginity even if by rape.. There are times, i didn't like Malliko like the female mc 's sexual interrest in the guy knowing he is engaged and before knowing about the supposed open relationship. But this second book, if it is what i fear will be offensive. I read the first chapter available, mind control, and that alone is a severe helplessness trigger. To make the vic love or lust after the alien who put her through hell Twice ! Unless the memories she had were implanted, and Sival was not her kidnapper but himself a prisoner of the poeple who took her. What if that jerk who left Tania is the scientist, solo ?, behind all that, and what if Tania has been brain clouded into loving him, or into believing she had no mental powers herself and into distrusting all other aliens.. All that to cripple her and to make it impossible for other aliens to examin her brain and discover the alterations. It s strange that not even the captain remembers this alien guy, maybe he wasn't even autorized to be on earth and went there to study the hybrid closely
I loved the idea of an undercover alien studying Earth, so i was excited to read this book. It took a few days for me to get through the first 26% of the book. And I think that was because Clara's POV was so depressing. I understand being heartbroken, and it scarring you from trying dating again. But it was worse than that because everything that Clara had been through stuck her in this weird limbo where she just existed. No friends, no family, no hobbies, no happiness of any kind. I was disappointed there wasn't really any world building. All of the aliens mentioned were all described as humanoid with slight variations. Some had a colorful ring in their eyes, some had exaggerated ears, or oversized jaws.. but they all were humanoid. There were grammar mistakes, and sometimes, the author made jumps that didn't really flow. The end was abrupt and just seemed a bit lazy. Also, the story was a FTB which I didn't know about and really didn't care for. I will not continue this series, but I may read more by this author in the future.
Having loved Elin Peer’s previous Men of the North and Cultivated series, I was expecting this book to begin with the same pace and was surprised to see that this had quite a slower pace than either of those did. As with everything Peer writes there is wonderful world crafting and character development, but I think I had a harder time entering this world at the beginning than with the other books because there was so much exposition without the conflict and tension that was central to these two previous series. It was a slow start to the book but I enjoyed watching as the characters came to life before my eyes. If you enjoy science fiction romances that ask “What makes us human?” and uses an extraterrestrial anthropologist to look at humanity from the outside, you’ll find a great book with Malliko and the beginning of a new series I look forward to following.
I have read and reviewed over two dozen books by Elin Peer, all highly rated by me. Her ability to create worlds and characters which reveal both the positive and negative sides of human nature while inspiring us to work together and to build a better society in which to live has typically been prevalent. However, this new endeavor was a big let-down. In fact, after reading (not comfortably) 25%, I chose not to continue which is a rare occurrence for me to do, especially when indulging in writings from a favorite author. Should I decide to pick it up again I will up-date my review. But for now, I saw no value in its content nor were the characters very appealing. While the plot seemed obvious, I felt no need to plod through to get to my HEA. The focus on studying sexual deviation was a turn-off. Perhaps the rest of the book gets better but I may never know…I received an arc and this is my honest and voluntary review.
Amazing book, once again Elin manages to transport the reader into a new and engaging world, whether it's Northmen, cults or superior beings, this writer never disappoints. I think the debut of this new sci-fi series will steal, again, her fans hearts, mine certainly was stolen. I loved the book, the characters and the story transport the reader, almost making you feel like it's yourself that comes from an alien planet, making you see humanity and Earth with new eyes, leaving a sense of pride and gratitude for what we are and have. As usual, a five-star romance that will make anyone who reads the book fall in love but with a series of profound messages hidden between its lines that give depth to the story, a detail always present on Elins books. Absolutely recommended⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Fantastic start with this first book in Elin Peer’s new sci-fi series “Descendants of Doom”. While humans on Earth have progressed some, it’s not enough to divulge the existence of non-humans walking the planet, or of those beings in space who know about the protected species on Earth. The Federation wants to gain additional knowledge about the humans, sending an expert in speciology from the Federation to Earth to observe the humans and their sexuality. There are many humorous moments once Malliko arrives & begins his research. What better way to learn & observe than with the lovely Clara who works for a dating app company? There are twists & turns in this enjoyable book provided by the excellent writing skills of Ms. Peer.
If you’ve read Elin Peer before, you know to expect excellent world and character building. This is no exception. This new series is different than others I’ve read because its premise is more sci-fi. Many worlds were populated by the same race but they developed differently. When Malliko is allowed to go to earth, he is fascinated by the “backwards” earth people. They are way behind on technology and are still warring with each other but they experience a larger range of emotions than any other race. While there was a bit of a slow start, this character driven story really does examine a lot of deep issues. Fascinating read. Glad to have a new series by this excellent author.
3.75 Stars I am a regular reader of this authors books. It took me a moment to get into this newest book. The pacing was slow, which I attribute to creating the groundwork for the series. What happens when everything you believed to be true, is far from the truth? Malliko knows that his planet is not the only one out there. When an opportunity arises to study humans on Earth he goes. Clara is divorced, working for a dating company processing disgruntled clients and their complaints. She has no illusions that love and romance are in her future. Malliko's research reveals much more as he interacts with Clara challenging their perceptions. Along the way their relationship as individuals and as a couple develop. Overall an enjoyable read.
Oh how I feel for Clara! What a douche x husband! Wow he made so mad!! What an a**hole! Sorry, but I feel it that strongly!
But how turn of event we got after that. So sweet a love story! Malliko and Clara are a perfect match! Normaly I'm not that mutch in to sci-fi, but wow Elin Peer did an awesome job here! Got me in all the way! And the humor of the difference, so good! I got to work late one day because I was lost in the book and forgot the time!
We got a nice teaser for the next book, sounds so good and exciting! Can't wait to see where it takes us to!
Hope to see more to Clara and Malliko again. And more to Tania and her badass woman attitude! But I'm sure we will!
Thank you Elin for another awesome book! I just love your writing and can't get enough of your books!
W.O.W. Malliko has made his way into my heart! Author has once again created a world outside of this world. Difference between all her other works - and works of others - this book is about the extraterrestrial world Jargon in book is fascinating- as is her fictional creation of a world outside of Earth. Life outside of earth is fascinating as it is- but the world author has created is more. It is hard to summarize or even explain this work-as I have written review several times. Having come to the conclusion of just saying -you MUST experience Malliko on your own. After reading,I am confident that you will love Malliko as I do
This book has great world building and an original plot. It really makes you think about humanity and the world we live in! Malliko is an alien who goes to planet Earth to do some research in the area of sexuality. He meets Clara, who works for a dating agency and who has agreed to mentor him. She has no idea he is not human, which is a big secret to keep when you are in a relationship with someone. Will they stay together? I enjoyed the story and it was fun seeing Earth through an alien's eyes. I'm looking forward to the next installment in the series. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Interesting twist in this new series! I have to admit, I don’t read much sci-fi, but this book is enthralling from the start! Clara is a divorced mother of two who has been emotionally burned by her ex husband. She’s really been through the ringer and has sworn off love despite her ironic choice of working for a dating site as a moderator. Malliko is from another planet similar to earth, but more advanced. He is sent to study the mating habits of humans. The immediate chemistry when he meets Clara only grows, but he is forbidden to have a relationship with her. I am curious how the rest of the series will go from here. Can’t wait to read more!!
Elin Peer delivers another fresh, thought provoking book that explores human sexuality via a human like being with no experience in sex to study sex. Clara works for Go2Match, has a deep mistrust of men, is divorced and lost custody of her sons after her husband cheated on her.
Malliko knows war, not human sexuality. But he aims to study it with Clara’s assistance. Highly recommend for a very timely and pertinent subject matter, though told through a bit of a sci-fi filter.
I liked this book but had some issues with the female characters. While, one of the points of the plot was to show how past experiences color how we view the world and treat others, I feel that the actions of Tania were high school mean girl status. I also feel that Clara was a bit immature as well. This was probably the point for the progression of overcoming past trauma. I just personally dislike emotionally immature women lol. I look forward to the next book and seeing what happens.
This was an interesting and intriguing storyline with a sci-fi storyline. It has two planets with Earth as one and how it evolved differently that the other by the same descendants. But an alien comes to Earth to study their sexuality and find out if things they had heard are true. He meets a human woman and wants to find out what he can from her. What will happen next? I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
Though Ms. Peer has written contemporary romance I think she excels at other-worldly stories! Stories that transport the reader to a different place, or time!
Clara has lost her trust in men! Can Malliko get her to trust again?
Well done! Can't wait to read more from this series!
Promising start 4 stars. - Great world building. Fascinating take on relationships and emotions by the Eidrons. I would have liked Malliko and Clara to have more physical intimacy but I understand that Clara’s emotions and past plays a large role in her actions. The second book seems to be more intriguing and a bit dangerous so I'll definitely be watching out for that. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily chose to review it.
Deserves more stars! This book is amazing. Malliko and Clara are both great characters with an ‘out of this world’ backstory. Although this is a work of fiction, it makes sci-fi suddenly really believable. It is thought-provoking and emotional as you would expect if you’ve ever read a book by this author. My mind has been opened to the thought that maybe we aren’t alone in the universe. This really is a fascinating must read.
I really enjoyed this book. The author creates an intriguing world and complex characters. The story quickly grabbed my attention and held it well. I liked the chemistry between Malliko and Clara. This book certainly makes you think while also keeping you entertained. I look forward to reading more of this series. I am independently posting an impartial review.
This is a sci-fi romance read that had me hooked from beginning until the last word. The two main characters come from different worlds and have to learn how to trust each other. I can’t say anymore about the storyline without giving it away. So if this is your genre then I highly recommend this read. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.
