Discover how easy and profitable it is to sell chickens, eggs, and turkeys in raised gardens or on pastures. You don't need a lot of land or a large investment.
This book is for large scale producers (i.e., hundreds or even thousands of chickens). It's great for that purpose. Just don't buy it expecting advice specifically for a smaller producer or you'll be a bit disappointed, as some other reviews on here were. For smaller scales you should check out their book "Chicken Tractor" (appropriate for flocks of 25 to a few hundred) or their book "City Chicks" (appropriate for micro-flocks of 25 or fewer in your backyard).
Like its predecessor, Chicken Tractor, a must-read for anyone raising chickens. The techniques described within are the next step for someone wantng to graduate from "chicken tractor status" into a slightly larger production mode or just improving chicken-raising techniques.
I really wanted to like Day Range Poultry, but was disappointed. Not enough information and what was there was very mainstream and not applicable to the small scale.
This book is a sort of permaculture how-to for someone interested in raising a small flock of chickens and turkeys (mostly geared toward profit). I have a very small backyard and 6 chickens is just about the right number for me, so a lot of the information didn't apply to my specific situation, but I did learn some interesting tidbits and I decided to read the authors' other book, City Chickens, in hopes that there's more tailored information about smaller backyard flocks. The cover of this book is one of the dorkiest I've ever seen.
Honestly, I have no idea why I can't stop reading chicken books. I've kept chickens for a couple years. I've read a lot of books already. I feel pretty confident that we're doing right by our hens. But I can't stop.
The disappointment of this book was that it made me realize that all I'd learned about chicken tractors might not be as valuable as I had first thought. Smoothly written and filled with practical advice, this is a book for backyard gardeners and hobby farmers.
