I liked the voice and the mystery to keep me reading. For a book written by a person I do not know, that's an accomplishment.
The problem with having a Kindle and grabbing free and low-priced books is that I grab far more books than I can read. I usually read a few pages and, if my interest is insufficiently piqued, I'll move on to another book.
I do read books written by people I know whether I'm drawn into it or not. If I know the writer, I like to give them my attention. Often, I've found that what didn't necessarily appeal to me in the first few pages grew on me when I continued. Still, that's the benefit of the doubt I give friends.
A.J. is in the category of getting a freebie. He did well. I read through to the end. A minor niggle is that I found the ending less satisfying than everything preceding it. I think some of the plot twists could have been omitted. Don't want to spoil, so I'll just say I believe it all could have wrapped up several pages earlier without diminishing the story at all.
I originally thought this book would be something I would only half-read during silent reading time in class because I forgot my normal book and Wattpad was at my disposal. However, it turned out to be amazing and although I didn't have time to finish it at school, I came back home and neglected my homework for it.
The suspense and mystery really filled me with adrenaline. The descriptions, imagery and world-building made me feel as if I was right there in the story. I felt like I was actually Steve, thinking these thoughts and feeling these feelings. The ending did leave me pretty dissatisfied though. I can't really put my finger on why that is.
