A celebration of the magnificent and unexpected world of the Arctic. The Arctic, the mystical lands north of 60 degrees, is a cold and forbidding place that is covered in ice and snow for most of the year. Yet each spring the Arctic becomes a land of unforgettable beauty, when a profusion of life explodes across the entire landscape. The Arctic is so different from the more temperate regions of Earth that author and photographer Wayne Lynch presents this region as though it were a different planet. In Planet Arctic , the reader can experience this land through the lens of a master photographer who has spent 30 years exploring and photographing this vast region. Lynch fully understands and appreciates Arctic birds, plants and animals in all their mystery. Here is the world of the polar bear, the arctic fox, the seal, the walrus and the musk ox, as well as a vast array of seabirds and exquisite, hardy wildflowers and ancient lichens. Lynch's enthusiasm is contagious, and the photos, testament to his unerring eye for beauty, will captivate readers. Complex natural history concepts are decoded as Lynch describes the magnificent life-forms that inhabit this distant and frigid yet spectacular world -- one that is under increasing stress from global warming and climate change.
I read this with my daughter after finishing The Very, Very Far North by Dan Bar-El. This was a fantastic photographic journey through the Arctic and had so many of the animals and landscape that we had just read about. Admittedly, we did not read all of the text but mainly focused on the images and skimming for interesting facts about each of the animals, but the parts we did read were both well-written and engaging. Highly recommend to share this with kids after reading a story set in the Arctic.
Magnificent photos , and not just the usual suspects: if one has had a surfeit of polar bears and ice floes, the close up studies of frosted Arctic flowers and bright colour-splashed lichens maintain one's interest. The text is secondary to the pictures but shows the author to be a knowledgeable and seasoned Arctic traveller as well as a superb photographic artist. What's not to like?
Fabulous book! Finished it in 6 days (not consecutive). I like the way how the author tells interesting stories behind each beautiful photograph. It makes you imagine yourself being in author's field trip, observing wilderness with him.
This book features miniature plants, birds and wildlife found in arctic tundra, eg lichen, polar bear, reindeer, walrus, beluga etc.
This is a hardcover book with high quality photos printed on thick glossy paper (book weight 1.5kg), the presentation is beyond awesome. Highly recommended for coffee table book, leisure reading, travellers, wildlife photography.
