Map of Shadows

Rate this book
If Gwen doesn't accept her magic, she just may lose it forever.

Now that Jack Darrow’s ship has been retrieved from The Veil, he and Gwenyth Hutchinson are on their way to retrieve a long lost Consort and finally free Jack from his obligation to the deadly Keeper of Shadows. In order to do that, they need to find a map that will lead them to her…if only they knew where to start.

For now, they’re content to scour taverns for any information and possibly put together a crew that may be able to help them on their quest.

Until one vicious fight causes Gwen to leave the tavern and Jack to seek a distraction elsewhere.

While cursing Jack, she stumbles upon a woman who needs help, and, without thinking, she uses her magic to save the woman. Unbeknownst to Gwen, this draws the wrong sort of attention—she’s arrested by none other than The Order and Ambyr Hamilton herself. And what Ambyr has in store for Gwenyth will be nothing short of agony.

If Gwen has any hope of surviving, she must accept the magic within her before it's too late and Ambyr snuffs it out forever.

I'm not a pirate girl. I've never been one and I'll very likely never become one. I don't know what it is, but for some reason pirates and I are not a great fit. However, Isadora Brown and I are a great fit. I love all the stories I've read by her so far and she's amazing when it comes to mixing well known material with her own original content. I also really enjoyed the first book in this series so I was happy that BookSprout let me know there was an arc for this one available.

This book is mostly the book helping our characters to grow. I can imagine that the author sat down and wondered what would need to happen for our characters to have them become the characters she needs for the plot to move forward. This is it. This is what the characters needed. Our heroine to develop her magic and to learn to accept her magic as a vital, important and beautiful part of her. Our hero to acknowledge that this girl means something to him.

Because the characters were put through so much this was not an easy book to read. There are descriptions of torture, there is a lot of panic and fear and there are quite a few very sad moments in this book. Things clearly had to become a lot worse first before they can become better. But I love how emotional those scene were. I could feel the fear and the panic and the danger. I was screaming at the characters to act and react.

And although we've not really traveled much in this book, which was unexpected for me because pirates equal traveling in my head, we've learned a lot about the world and the political situation. We also finally got to meet the antagonist of the story in person. Since we're not in her head it's hard to not hate her, but the author does a great job showing us that she's not just a power-hungry villain being bad just to bad.

I'm therefore still very excited to continue this series and I can't wait for the next book to be available!

Our duo is prepared to set course on the next leg of their journey, but first they need a map to direct them. With no idea where to look, they soon end up divided and in trouble. Not a good way to continue their adventure.

This is book two of the series. The story does okay as a standalone, but will be much more enjoyable if read in order. Your call.

This a paranormal romance story with pirates (well, pyrates here), vampires and other monsters. The book is very well written and easy to read with a diverse cast of characters that complex personalities and motivations. The setting is also well developed and fun to discover through the narrative. The story itself has several twists and turns as it proceeds which keeps you guessing and turning pages. Plus, pirates are always fun. Overall, I enjoyed this latest story and look forward to seeing more.

Highly recommended.

A Time of Change . . .

Jack Darrow and Gwenyth Hutchinson will be experiencing a great deal of growth in this story. They are looking for someone to complete Jack’s mission and they begin their search by visiting taverns as a start. A fight has Gwen leaving and she ends up captured and headed for some unpleasant experiences. For Gwen, this is a time where she must overcome her doubts and accept her magic or face the consequences. For Jack, he needs to step up and recognize his feelings for Gwen. Will they each fulfill these growth opportunities? Or are they headed for pain and destruction?

Grab your copy filled with fast pacing, tension, surprises, and magic. The twists and turns will keep you guessing and coming back for more!

Spoiler Alert ⚠️
I'm really enjoying reading this series, and getting to know Jack and Gwen.
Also in this book we meet Ambyr, who takes Gwen prisoner for her own personal agenda.
Alec, who works for the Order sees this and who was Gwen's friend. Is tasked with taking something to Jack that he is seeking.
He then ends up as part of the crew. But you'll have to read the book to find out how that happens.
There are so many twists and turns in this book that it will keep you gripped, and that you won't see coming.
Will Jack and Gwen finally admit how they feel about each other, if she manages to get away from Ambyr that is.
Isodora always writes a fantastic book. She never disappoints me, and always leaves me wanting more. I'm looking forward to see where this series is going to go.

This book goes straight from the first and jumps straight into the action.
It seemed a lot shorter than the first. I liked that you got to see friendships rekindled and feelings shown. You also got to see the side of the orders leader that you only got to learn in the first book.
It seems like happy ever after may be possible with how this latest book ended but we shall see.
Are friendships really rekindled, will family be as welcoming as we hope and will the Pyrate finally admit he's fallen in love???.

Wow. I really don’t have any other words than that. This story sucked me in from the opening pages and held me tight until I closed the covers. Nearly every part of this book is a revelation. From Gwen’s powers to her family heritage to Jack’s dawning feelings. So, I don’t want to say too much about their adventures for fear of spoiling the discovery of readers to come after me. All I will say is that I enjoyed this thoroughly and I can’t wait to read the next in the series.

This book has lots of humour and adventure as well as unexpected twists and turns. The characters are well-drawn and evolve within the story, especially the main character, she has to overcome her inner struggles and doubts in order to grow into the powerful being she ultimately becomes.

The relationship Gwen and Jack share may be complicated but they are good together I just hope they work things out and are able to be together.

This is such a great story and flows well from where we left off in book one. It’s one hell of an adventure, exciting, thrilling and holds your attention. Our characters are growing and developing as the story moves on and our female mc is learning to accept herself as she is and her magic before it’s too late. With incredible world building that pulls you in, this paranormal fantasy is full of magic, pirates, secrets and twists and turns that make sure you can’t put this down.

Jack and Gwen are great characters together and book two was just as engaging and adventurous as the first. I can't wait to continue the series. Gwen continues to resist her magic and has to come to the realization she needs to embrace it. She gets captured again and ITS JUST A WHOLE THING! Our dearest friend Ambyr is back as you might expect. I NEED BOOK 3!!!

Gwen and Jack are back and so is all the trouble. Lots of action, danger, surprises, Pyrates, intrigue, and guessing what will happen next. Loved it all and was glued to the end. Had to see how Gwen would survive and get out of the trouble she gets into. So much fun to read. Cannot go wrong with magic and pirates.

I really enjoyed this book. From Chapter One on it kept my interest. Too bad Jack tore up the map. The villains were extra bad and I cheered when Gwenyth fought back. So much happens and you learn a little bit more about her magic. I would recommend this book and series.

This was an amazing continuation of the first book and I am so loving the Pirates of the Caribbean vibe this series has. What I like most is the dynamic between these two it's like I want to love Gwen but sometimes she can be so naive but I still want her to succeed and Jack is just awesome lol.

Jack and Gwen have succeeded in retrieving his ship from The Void but now they are obligated to return his consort to the Keeper of Shadows. Now all they need is the map that will lead them to the consort, and a crew to help sail the ship. But after they have a fight Gwen leaves the tavern they are staying in, and she is once again captured by The Order. After being tortured by Ambyr and her favorite torturer she realizes that she has to lean to accept her magic before it is stolen from her.
Gwen is a strong young woman, but she has a history that she needs to overcome if she wants to come to terms with the fact that she has magical powers. Jack has survived on his own for long enough that he finds it difficult to trust anyone. These are well written and unique characters that are not yet willing to admit their developing feelings for each other. Their interactions are engaging, compelling, and at times humorous. The action, suspense, magic, and unexpected twists in the plot that kept this reader engrossed in this fantastic world from the first page.
