I've always appreciated Magritte's playing with the tensions between appearance and reality, the signifier and the signified. I thought I had already seen the bulk of his work, but I was sadly mistaken. I loved reading this book arranged around themes/image types and littered with excerpts from letters and other writing. I enjoyed seeing sketches and final art pieces, images and thoughts in montage. And Torczyner's opening account of his friendship with Magritte was a startling reminder of the artist as person and not just producer of art objects.
Thorough exploration of this simple/complex surrealist painter whose orderly life resulted in such extraordinary works. Many wonderful plates and well ordered text.
