A collection of strikingly original short stories which sharply observe aspects of gay life and the many obsessions which fuel it. Written with a wry wit and a nice sense of both the off-beat and the erotic. A new edition of a book with a proven track record. Joseph Mills grew up in Glasgow, Scotland where he works in a library. He is the author of Towards the end and has contributed to The Mammoth Book of Gay Short Stories and The Picador Book of Contemporary Scottish Fiction .
This is a collection of short stories (and one novella) written in the 1990's by a Scottish author. None of the stories managed to grab me. Sometimes I had difficulty knowing which character was speaking — if there is a "Robert" and a "William" which one was who again?
Lots of expository bits. "Show, don't tell" is apparently not big in gay Scottish fiction.
Perhaps it's simply a matter of voice. To my ear, the stories needed editing. Perhaps to a Scottish reader, they would be perfect.
That cover though. There was a time when every gay book had to have a variation of that cover.
