Thank you Eddie for a lovely whisky tasting journey. This journey contain what to do and think of during whisky tasting. Specially appreciate the sections about American whiskey such as bourbon, Rye, wheat and corn. Interesting sections where you are guided through different places and whiskies around the world.
My highlight of this book is the 20 tasting sessions where Eddie compare the profile of four different whiskies plus the closest related whiskies if the first one in each group is not available where you are.
I had the luxury to travel around the world and taste a number of the whiskies mentioned in this book but there are many more now that are on my to try list thanks to this book. I will go back to this book for bottle references and tasting notes again and again.
Highly recommend this book to whisky beginners as well as malt maniacs you will all learn something from Eddies book. Well done Eddie, when is your next book out, got this one signed by Eddie at the York whisky festival held by his company whiskylounge.com
Coffee table (bar top?) book about all the kinds of whiskey in the world with tips on tasking and whatnot. Lots of charts and "infographics;" fun to flip through. I do think I learned more reading the first 60 pages of the latest Michael Jackson's Guide to Single Malts than I did reading this whole book, but I appreciate the breadth of Ludlow's coverage. Worth checking out from the library, as I did.
This handsome hard covered book provides an interesting and informative introduction to whiskey. Filled with photos and colourful graphics, it contains the basics including background, pairing suggestions and recipes. It flags, however as a tasting course. Many of the tasting suggestions are obscure and expensive. A knowledgeable liquor store owner or bartender can provide alternatives. Otherwise well done.
A gem of a book. Highly informative, accessible, useful and entertaining. A pleasure to read and one to savour, like an aged Speyside malt (for me, anyway) or a crisp, cool Bourbon on the rocks.
This was a highlight of my year! It's not often that I read a book as slowly and carefully as I did this one, only to ask for it for Christmas so I can read it again and use it in the future.
This summer I was looking to increase my wine knowledge (for my serving job), and someone recommended Wine Folly: The Essential Guide to Wine to me, which I read and appreciated. Then, since I'm much more of a whiskey guy myself, I wondered if there was such a book for whiskey, and I was utterly satisfied by this find!
If you're looking for a crash course in whiskey, this is it. If you're already fairly versed in whiskey, this is still the book for you! It's likely that the 20 tastings alone will take me several years to set up, unless I find the perfect whiskey bar that has everything, or win the lottery and can stock my own shelves with any bottle I like.
The only downside to this book is the fact that I'll probably never be able to afford all the whiskey I want to try, and the breadth of knowledge contained in this book will just make me more aware of that, like reading a travel book when you can't afford to jet set all year long. But this book will still help me (and the friends I enjoy whiskey with) to appreciate what I do get to experience! I intend to use it to set up some social tastings using the suggested tasting courses inside.
A decent entry level book if it’s your first book about whisky but a little too dumbed down if you have a few under your belt. Another issue is that the tasting courses peppered throughout the book primarily feature whiskies that are either impossible to find or prohibitively expensive. Plus there are a handful of typos which, how does that stuff get through to the presses?
A great book that provides an overview of the world of whiskey. Great for anyone who wants to learn more about their (hopefully) favorite drink. Lots of great pictures and visualizations as well which is a plus and really helps convey the information in a simple but informative manner.
Solid as a guidebook, travelogue, history, and tasting introduction, with great illustrations…maybe less successful in its grouped tasting methodology. Beyond one’s own particular fave category or two, it would take an amazing whiskey bar to pull off many of the suggested tastings.
Overall, a visually beautiful introduction book to whiskey that: (1) ably makes the complex historical, cultural, and legal aspects of the whiskey world accessible: and (2) provides a practical framework to apply theoretical knowledge.
However, it is worth noting that many of the whiskeys in the tasting course are not widely available. Moreover, the book is poorly edited, which has lowered my rating. Nevertheless, this remains a good reference book.
