Misty, a teenager in a small midwestern town, marks her passage into adulthood during the 1960s and 1970s with recollections of the boys she has loved, her relationship with her parents, and her conflicting roles as dutiful daughter and outrageous rebel
Lisa Walker is a stellar writer, this autobiographical debut novel is a page turner. The story is coming of age set in Springfield, Missouri in the 60's and 70's. The narrator grows up with an alcoholic mom and physically abusive dad, but is better off than some. She is a seeker, and always looking for the why, often trying to find the answers in the wrong boys/men. In less deft hands, this could have been less entertaining. Ms. Walker is a contributor to The New Yorker and it shows.
