As it's Dali, I'll start this review with a favorite joke:

How many surrealists does it take to change a light-bulb?
Fish...

I'm not sure I read this as much as just immersed myself into the realm and embraced the ride.
I thoroughly enjoyed the artwork (of course) and the entire feel of the book, both literally and figuratively. I'm not much of a wine connoisseur but I am a lover of Dali's art so the combination made for an enjoyable read. Learning new-to-me things about wine while seeing so much accompanying fantastical art made for a wonderful way to savor the time it took me to peruse. A win-win for me, and my coffee table too.

I still prefer tequila though.

I read this book because it was similar to another I wanted to read, a recipe book by and illustrated by Dali. I have not read that yet, hard to get delivered to the library, but this is an interesting book.

Good overview of wines. I don't really like wines, but it is interesting. Mostly well-written and made me want to try all the different kinds. The art seemed to compliment the wines being written about, but - well, Dali is so weird. Unless I took a class or read a book telling me how to interpret all the pieces in the book, I'm lost. I have hunches and have thought about how to interpret them, but I don't know if I am right. All very interesting though, and it kept me reading the whole book.

So check the Amazon pricing of this if you're interested because while it is normally $50, it was 15 dollars right now and the picture of the kitten puking up wine on a bevy of semi-nude and nude Grecian really makes that worth it.

I suppose if you expect to learn anything about wine, you will be sorely disappointed. But as an experience, as an appreciation, this is well worth your coinage. Pure decadence, pure privilege, pure hedonism, personified.

This is one of the most amazing books I have ever encountered. A co-worker tried to convince me to steal it, but being from the Georgia State University library, it would have prohibited me from graduating (otherwise at the time, I might have done it). This is a hardback book including artwork by Dali and quotes from antiquity to the present on the glories of wine - "fruit of the earth". It is one I would pay a lot of money to add to my collection.

Essentially a Poetics of Wine.

There are at least two other books I know of that are worth checking out if one enjoys this book. They are DALI and Les Diners de Gala. These books are very similar to Wines of Gala.

It is very nice to look at and full of useful embellishments on the experiences of each of the most famous regions of the world. The Illustrations are unfathomably appropriate! look under the sleeve at the hard cover and you wont be disappointed.
