Rate this book
Before Cara Fleming became a detective for the Chicago Police Department, she lived in the shadowy depths of homelessness. Now, when her apartment is set ablaze in an attempt to stop one of her investigations, she plunges undercover into street life again to protect herself. Bryan O'Shaugnessy, an Episcopal priest on the south side of Chicago, has a new project on his hands: the soup kitchen his church sponsors. Overworked, harried, and lonely, he finds himself surprisingly drawn to the new volunteer named Cara. Against this backdrop of hide-and-seek with criminals who will stop at nothing, Bryan unexpectedly meets the love of his life. Will he be able to convince Cara to accept the possibility of a home with him?

Cara knew the world of being homeless, before becoming a detective. Meeting Bryan he is a priest, but she feels at home in the church. Her time off is spent helping the less fortunate. Her life is with few friends, and granny.. She wants to run, thinking she has been in one place to long. Can granny and Bryan get her to stay. Emotion filled book of closing one self off, thinking they are safe, from the evil they had escaped from. Good three book series, of how three women lives were changed.

This is my favorite book in the series by far. It was also the first one we owned and I have this habit of falling in love with the first thing I read or play in series, lol. It has good pacing and I love the suspense, though comparatively light to some I have read for sure. I also love how we get to see the characters from the previous two books and how they are doing, I love it when series let us see a where are they now.

I enjoyed the story, but not as much as the others in the series. I'm more interested in her next series which will take place in San Diego.

It was nice to read about a couple who didn't meet until they were 38 and 45 respectively, as this is not common in books I've read. It was also neat to read about how your past and your passions can combine into a career you love. Overall an enjoyable and fast read.
