I devoured this second book in Julianne MacLean's Highlander series! I also decided to up my rating from a four star to a five star. The fact is, I haven't felt this passionate about a story in awhile. There have been some in 2015; but they are getting harder to find in my opinion!

In this story we have Angus, who I did not like in the first book! I will say though, he is very gruff around the edges, but when it comes to Gwendolyn....he ends up showing us a side of him that I adored! He is also very passionate....or should I say...."lusty!!" LOL Gwendolyn was a perfect match for Angus, and I loved how these two meet. Angus has brought an army to take back his home. Poor Gwendolyn, is basically the only "leader" her clan has now that her father is dead, and her brother is over seas. I am going to tell you though, this woman does not back down. She gives a new definition to the word brave! I loved her, and it is not often that I do love the heroines! She is more than worthy though, and she gives poor Angus a run for his money!

This romance is an enemy to lovers kind of book! Believe me, if you love a good Highlander read, then this series is a MUST READ! I am eager to move on to Book 3!! Oh, and these are re-reads for me! The fifth book just came out a few days ago though, and I am very eager to get my paws on books four and five in the series! (I haven't read them yet!!) I am so glad I decided to give myself a refresher, it was well worth it, and what a way to finish 2015! I am glad to be saying goodbye to this year on a positive note in my reading! Thank you Julianne MacLean!

This book is a small and milder version of GOT. Less drama. Less characters. But dont get it wrong. It has many plot about betrayal and complexity from secondary characters. It is entertaining.

I like Gwendoline fierceness. She is a kick ass heroine. She never gives up on her husband even though Angus has some doubt about her loyalty.

I feel the middle of the book is dragging. And i think the plot getting thicker but resolved too quickly. So I only give this book 3 stars.

Well, after reading and reviewing Ms. MacLean’s first book in this trilogy, I wasn’t sure, No. 1, if I wanted to continue with the series, and, No. 2., what I would find if I decided to continue on. There’s so many issues I had with Captured by the Highlander, I knew a good many of them would show up in this book. And they did. But then I got a nice surprise.

The first, roughly, half of this book is nearly a mirror of CbtH - hardened, tortured hero looking for revenge, taking back what is his, keeping the heroine at bay with a cranky attitude and suspicion. Our hero, Angus, the Lion of the Highlands, has gone a step further by vowing to never fall for a woman because that makes a man weak. He started this in the previous book when Duncan, his best friend, fell for an Englishwoman and gave up his violent life. In Angus’ eyes, that made Duncan weak. Okay, I went with that; I knew Angus’ perceptions were off at the time because of the loss he’d gone through. In the meantime, he betrays his friend and is ultimately banished for that behavior by his father. Two years later, after learning of his sire’s death, he returns to Kinloch castle to reclaim his birthright from the clan who stole it from his father.

Gwendolen is the daughter of the deceased chief of the MacEwen clan and refuses to give in to the sword-wielding warrior who cuts down too many of her clansmen, and flat out objects when her enemy claims her to be his wife to supposedly reunite their two clans. Of course, their initial relationship is full of anger and suspicion. And this is where Ms. MacLean’s writing just doesn’t work for me.

When Gwendolen and Angus are going at each other, angry words flying, they sound like modern people instead of an 18th century couple. As I said in my previous review, I realize that some of our everyday phrases can and do come from the past, but when it’s one that’s used a lot nowadays or one that truly is modern, that pulls me out of a story quicker than anything else. I nearly gave up on this book when I got to the heroine telling the hero they will never be married as long as he continues to drag his knuckles on the ground. Sorry, that’s so out of place. I’m pretty darned sure a Highland lass from the 1700s would know nothing about Neanderthals. I definitely know Gwendolen doesn’t because her focus is her clan and her duty to them, and that focus changes to Angus, good and bad, when he shows up. And just a few paragraphs after that, she thinks she’s scraping the bottom of the barrel when giving him reasons for finally taking her, despite the fact she’ll never let him touch her at that point in time. That idiom didn’t exist until the first half of the 1900s.

A few others that irritate me are:

pretty little head
lay of the land
grace us with his presence
left to their own devices
cleavage - not until at least 1810
shag - not until 1788
Achilles’ heel - not until 19th century

And those are just the ones I marked and can list for you now. There’s way too many to ignore in this book. It would be better if they can be reworked in some way, give a new twist to an old saying. That can be done; I’ve seen it from other authors. Just another reason I ended up aggravated while reading this story. There’s also a few inconsistencies that crop up, but those don’t bother me nearly as much as all of the above. Maybe because it’s only a few as compared to so many more of the other. I can live with a few.

But after all of this, when both Gwendolen and Angus decide it’s better that they go with the flow (sorry, couldn’t resist!), the book actually gets better. They now try to get along more, and, of course, once Angus makes Gwendolen his wife in all ways, their relationship becomes filled with laughter and happy days. Ms. MacLean does this part of the story justice. No out-of-place sayings to drag you away from the goings-on. And I like these characters much better during this time. Their happiness lasts for a while, until betrayal hits. Then the doubts creep in.

The story then follows the usual pattern we see in most romance novels when this happens. Angus thinks Gwendolen is lying about being with child, thinks she’s the one to betray him. Gwendolen, of course, wishes he’d trust her more, even though their relationship is still quite new. This all is taken nearly right up to the end, before they both acknowledge their love for the other and decide to truly trust one another. A little too long for resolution, but it works okay.

So in the end, while I’m not totally happy with this book, it is better than CbtH. Seduced by the Highlander, Lachlan’s, Angus’ Laird of War, book is to be released in October. I can only hope Ms. MacLean takes a different path for him and his heroine, instead of following along the same one in these two books. But I have a feeling the dialogue is going to once again be something I can’t get past if and when I read that one.

I LOVED this book. I'm on a highlander binge, and have read so many highland stories from so many authors that my mind gets jumbled with all the clan names.

This book was a particular treat. It is hard to think of forgiving Angus the Lion for his part on Duncan's capture in book one. But I urge readers to keep an open mind. While this book is part of a trilogy, it would work fine as a stand alone.

I adore Gwen, one of the best heroines I've come across in a while. I was completely smitten with the couple. The author wrote scenes that demonstrate what it is really like to be in love during the beginning of a marriage. There is a scene where the couple are laying against opposite sides of the bed, and Angus massages Gwen's feet as they have pillow talk after one of their steamy love scenes. There were quite a few heartwarming scenes of a couple truly in love. I LOVED IT. I actually cried twice.

Highly recommended and much more than I expected!!!

Another great book to add to this series.
In the previous book I took a disliking to Angus so I was worried about reading his story but a friend told me that I might even love Angus more that I did Duncan and she was right. Although Duncan/The Butcher is still my favourite, Angus was a fantastic Hero. The thing is with Duncan he was flirtacious, charming and had a great sense of humour. So we knew straight away even when he was taking Amelia hostage and trying his best to terrify her, that he had another softer side in there somewhere. But with Angus we didn't get that. Yes he flirted a little but he was menacing from the start. Charging in, taking control of Gwendolen's Castle (which was his by birthright) and annoncing to every person there that he would claim her as his wife and unite the two clans. Gwendolen stood above and heard his announcement and was absolutely terrified, rightly so. He was scary, rude and quickly tried to put her in her place. But Gwen gave a good fight, never giving him what he wanted if it didn't suit her. But we quickly learnt that Angus was lonely and that secretly he wanted her to like him, to warm to him and that she did.
They were a great fiery couple and I have to say that Gwen was an incredible heroine. I loved that from the beginning she was a fighter taking it in her stride and keeping control even when the castle was under attack. One of my favourite parts of this book came from her. It was their wedding night and they had just had sex for the first time and Angus immediately tried to retreat. He was scared, it was not what he had expected. Gwen held him too closely and he was scared of losing himself to her. Gwen had tried to get him to stay but he was about to walk through the door shouting at her saying that he is the Laird of the castle and will do as he pleases, thinking he has won until she says
'Even if you leave your wife unsatisfied?' He stopped in his tracks and turned around slamming the door behind him. He did not dissapoint her again! ;) As soon as those words left her lips I smiled the biggest smile and wanted to shout out in joy lol. She was finally learning how to handle him. It was an amazing scene!
I really can't wait to start the next book.

I can so imagine this book as one of those over-dramatic plays that you just cringe at but can't stop watching because it's so terrible.

Our-so-called-Heroine: "Trust me because you know me for only a week and I already betrayed you but in all honesty you made me change my mind because of your dark wet kisses that has made me feel this tingle tingle feeling I've never felt before.

-Tell me everything about yourself because I just have to know why you're this brooding dark hero who's angry at the whole world so I can turn you into my ideal lover who's whipped like cream to my cupcake and leave the thought of revenge behind because fighting equals bloody bad.

-I'm an independent strong woman who will never bow to a man and I will fight you like a hellcat until you paw my breasts and give me orgasms with your large dick and I can even imagine myself in love with you after just three romps."

Our-so-called-Hero "I couldn't and wouldn't love you but God damnit, your magically vay-jay-jay just made me a believer."

I can't express how much I enjoyed this book — a great surprise after reading Captured by the Highlander, book one of the series, which I thought was enjoyable but not capturing.

Claimed by the Highlander was capturing. So many Romance novels use the "I'm not worthy of love" or "love makes you weak" premise, but this book is the only one I can recall to have found believable. The shift of loath-to-love Angus was slow, but not to the point that it dragged. Gwendolen realizing she loved him was earlier than expected, yet still understandable; and I found each of their reactions realistic considering the circumstances while continuously true to their personalities.

The flow was great, with the dialogue natural (much better than Captured by the Highlander in my opinion). The characters were more lovable and well rounded. The action and plot was well paced, too. I loved how Julianne MacLean weaved the shifting outlook on love, life, and alliances throughout — how the people eventually sought peace within themselves and for their clan and country. It's a rare aspect to find in any Highlander novel.

I wish I could say this book could stand alone, that you wouldn't have to read the previous one, but to truly appreciate Angus's story, you'll need to read Captured first. And Julianne MacLean outdid herself this time around.

Claimed by the Highlander is a fabulous sequel and can claim a spot in my "read again" shelf.

I just finished Claimed by the Highlander with a happy, satisfied sigh.

Julianne MacLean is an auto-buy/keeper shelf author for me and I was surprised to learn that the hero of this book is someone who is...well, not so nice at the end of the first book in the trilogy (Captured by the Highlander). I'm not sure if that is why I had a hard time warming to Angus at first, but it was initially hard to get on his side. But that changes big time and Gwen is the perfect strong heroine to match him. The thing is, Angus isn't even sure if he knows how to love, and he shuts off his emotions. He shuts out everyone around him who may care and as a result, he kind of shuts out the reader, too. But that's all part of his growth arc, and the further I got into the book the faster the pages started to turn. Loving does not make him weak but he is afraid it does.

The plot twists as we get closer to the end are awesome. At one point I was reading and thinking how could Julianne DO that to Gwen (I won't say what as I try to stay fairly spoiler-free) and let's just say that what happens is the worst possible thing that could happen to her. I know my mouth hung open in parts. And the ending - oh, it was perfection! Just like she did in the beginning, Gwen stands up to the Lion of the Highlands in adorable fashion!

With her trademark sensuality and wit, MacLean has written another page-turner! I can't wait for the conclusion of the trilogy!

Well, this was a book for people that only want their "romance" novels filled with insecurities, distrust, and plenty of random sex. I really felt no connection to either of the main characters and after several major issues in the novel really would have rather that they did not stay together. Some of the things he did were completely inexcusable and it doesn't matter how damaged of a character he is, they were unforgivable. Then again, Gwendolen is one of those characters that fights, but not because she has a truly fiery spirit but because she feels that it is her duty to resist. She also wants that romantic intimacy with her conquer that the author dutifully gives us. I have read plenty of novels where the plot development and character development was deeper and more realistic.

Basically, this novel is perfect for people that really do not want an in-depth view of the characters and are fans of random sex. I prefer a bit more depth to my romance novels. A deeper plot and more well-rounded characters.

I enjoyed this book quite a bit more than the first in the series, Captured by the Highlander. I found myself engrossed in Angus and Gwendolen's story.
We met Angus "The Lion" Macdonald in the first book in this series and we knew him as a very angry Scot seeking revenge against the English for the rape and murder of his sister. He seemed very lost in his grief and anger, so much so that he betrayed a friend and was exiled from his family home by his father.
Captured by the Highlander starts when after two years of exile, and after learning the death of his father, Angus returns home to reclaim his family home, and in an effort to unite his clan and the clan residing within his home, he takes the former laird's daughter as his wife. He is looking to put war and bloodshed behind him and live a life of peace.
This book was a real page turner and if you like a brawny Highlander then you won't be disappointed with this read.

Again another wonderful book by Julianne MacLean. While I did not relate to the female character in this book as much as I did in the last, I admired her plenty. I did love that Angus would be considered part of my family by marriage as my husband is a MacDonald who’s very in touch with his Scottish heritage. I can only hope the next books in the series are as captivating as the first two have been

I enjoyed the majority of this story. The audiobook made it a smoother reading experience.

There were some very bodice ripper moments in this historical story, which gave it a less serious edge, but made for an entertaining read overall.

This book will also be going on my 'to be read again' pile. It was good for a number of reasons. I'm not sure how many romance novels I've read with the 'I'm unworthy of love and so I will never love you' trope, but there are a lot. This one is THE ONLY one I think I've read that it seemed believable. Usually I'm thinking, 'Sheesh, get over it already.' MacLean has a singular talent for making you understand the character's internal struggle and making it sound realistic.

Gwendolen's struggle with falling in love with Angus was somewhat short but also not so very unbelievable, nor boringly drawn out, as she went from I hate you - I really don't like you - I don't think I like you - This sex is hawt - Wait, I'm happy and this isn't so bad - I think I like you - Yep, I love you.

Normally a book like this would have probably annoyed me as either the heroine or hero fought to his/her dying breath to not love the other. Although it took until the end of the book for Angus to realize it, he showed through a number of little gestures that he really did. I think MacLean's strength is truly in her character development as we actually see the progression instead of a bombshell event occuring when he/she suddenly and unequivocally realizes he/she loves the other because the other was kidnapped/near death/leaves/etc.

Gwendolen MacEwen's father took Kinloch Castle from the MacDonald clan 2 years ago and now the banished MacDonald heir is back to claim his castle. Angus "the lion" MacDonald has just reclaimed Kinloch Castle and to keep peace within the land and unite two clans he has claimed Gwen as his bride.

This is the second book in the Highland Trilogy and I must say this series only gets better. I loved every page of this book, it is full of passion, adventure and excitement. MacLean is very good at creating enjoyable stories with believable characters and passionate love.

I loved both Angus and Gwen they are two characters that you would be happy to know. They are both strong in their own way and the passion between them is electric. I loved that Gwen fought for her clan and didn't just give in to Angus despite her fears and slutty mother's advice. I actually enjoyed Angus's refusal to give in to love, it made the story emotional and it proved that he is a strong Highland man down to his soul.

Lachlan is an incredibly intriguing character and I am excited to read the next book and see how things turn out for him.

This is a fantastic series and anyone who loves Highland stories will love this one. There is a little of everything in this book including betrayal, passion, a broken gate and a witch with a curse.

Although it was really entertaining and they hate to love (is) relationship between Angus and Gwendolen got me hooked from the beginning, the plot dragged a little and "the Lion's" lack of confidence in his capacity of loving and being lovedgot too old really quickly. Also, I really didn't like the ending, way too rushed and clean. Up until the last few pages the book was a 4 stars to me, but then the last few pages ruined everything.

It was amazing read.
I liked Angus at the first time on book 1, hate it when he betrayed Duncan, hate it when he claimed Kinlock, love him when he acted like a loving husband, hate him to the max when he believe his ex-lover instead his wife, love his loyalty to his wife, and the whole story, that brought me up and down. [image error]

Biarpun tanpa humor sedikitpun, aku lumayan bisa enikmati sih ceritanya, walaupun buat membaca ini aku sarankan harus baca buku 1 nya dulu Captured by the Highlander (Highlander Trilogy, #1) by Julianne MacLean tentang Duncan, the Butcher.

Aku agak terganggu dengn ibunya Gwendolen yg sangan bitchy, keknya dia mau tidur sama siapa aja deh, tante girang nih emaknya, anaknya alim banget...tapi yg bikin aku heran, Gwen yg awalnya nolak keras buat menikahi Angus, after cipokan2 Angus yg memabukkan tiap malam, dia malah menanti2kan kapan nih kawin nya...yeeeeee [image error]

Akhirnya menikahlah mereka, dan malam pertama nya emang bener2 di nantikan, kalo pake istilah Angus, dia sampe "kering" dan harus ngisi sumur nya lagi after last night wakakkakakakka [image error] ....sehebat itukah perawan satu itu?

Hm, sepertinya Gwen yg pemalu mendadak jadi nympho after "kena" colokan bang Angus...ehem...sedahsyat apa sih dia? [image error]
Yang jelas sangat dahsyat sampe mantannya yg dukun, datang ke kastil, ngamuk begitu tau Angus udah menikah dan mulailah mengacaukan segalanya....sayang nya, ini yg saat2 membuat diriku pengen menggetok si Angus, karena bukannya buru2 ngusir tuh nenek sihir, malah mempertahankan dia tinggal karena katanya dia jago ngeramal... (Angus memang sangat percaya sama ramalan).Dan satu lagi, dia hutang nyawa juga sih sama mantannya yg sialan itu [image error]

Tapi aku pikir2, kalo tanpa si witch ini, cerita nya gak akan seru, biarpun basically aku gak suka kalo hero/heroine nya lack of trust to each other...salah pengertian melulu kayak JM...hmpffftt.....
[image error]
Untunglah Duncan berbesar hati banget buat maafin Angus....

Ceritanya up and down bikin gemes, bagus sih karena Angus sampai akhir tetap setia dan gak kemakan rayuan mantannya yg berani2 coba ngeraba2 di bawah kilt nya...u=ih najis.. !!!

[image error]

So far,its good read, lots of sex, sex, sex....

Not suitable for age under 21.... [image error]

I hope she's DEAD on book 3 !!! [image error]

The second novel in Julianne MacLean’s Highlander trilogy delivers a gripping tale of treachery, heartbreak, intrigue, and trust, where only the fittest survive.

Claimed by the Highlander starts two years after the events in Captured by the Highlander. Angus ‘The Lion’ MacDonald has been living on the outskirts of civilization in exile when he learns about the death of his father and returns to reclaim his homeland. After winning the castle Angus claims the former laird’s daughter, Lady Gwendolen, as his bride in effort to unite the two clans living under one roof, but instead of finding a meek woman he can easily ignore he finds a stunning beauty refusing his claim.
To keep her clan safe though Gwendolen must accept her duty and marry the fierce warrior, but she will not bow down easily and sets her own terms. Just when their marriage seems to be more then one of mere conveyance a traitorous plan is revealed, one that could destroy their marriage, precious life’s, and the peace both of them long for.

If you read the first novel, Captured by the Highlander (which you do not need to in order to read Claimed by the Highlander), then you know that Angus wasn’t the most likeable character and I fully expected to carry on those negative feelings towards him into this novel, but I was pleasantly surprised at what I found and got swept away by his story.
Angus is riddled with guilt over his past but because of it he has wonderful morals, especially when it comes women. You see a depth to his character that was lacking in the previous novel and is incredibly endearing. To say that I ended up loving this fierce Highland warrior would be an understatement. He is a conflicted hero scared to love and be weakened by it, but with a surprisingly gentle touch and a golden heart.
Gwendolen on the other hand is dealing with her own internal struggles, trying to balance her loyalties that are all at odds. She is a charming heroine, who is brave, fighting for her beliefs. She at first is leery of the terrifying Lion but easily succumbs to her physical attraction to him. When she starts to develop deeper feelings for Angus, she tries to prove her love and trustworthiness to him and that journey was both heart warming and heartbreaking.
The characters and situations in Claimed by the Highlander were believable, entertaining and enamoring with incredible twists at the end of the plot that kept me on the very edge of my seat and my gut in knots, not to mention seductive scenes between Angus and Gwendolen that captured my breath.

Claimed by the Highlander was a wonderfully written, captivating story, which I was unable to put down. A definite must read!

I couldn't put this one down! I stayed up way past midnight to finish Claimed by the Highlander and I read it all in one sitting. I definitely enjoyed this Julianne MacLean romance as much as her first installment in her Highlander Trilogy, Captured by the Highlander. You should read that one first, because Claimed by the Highlander has spoilers about the first novel and contains crossover characters.

Claimed by the Highlander starts right off with action, and the romance is quickly introduced. I love that about MacLean’s books; you don’t have to wait long for the good stuff. I was hooked right away. The story begins with Gwendolen’s family castle being captured by the feared warrior, Angus the Lion, who has a legitimate claim to the lands. Angus promises to be merciful to Gwendolen’s clan if she will become his wife. Gwendolen agrees to marry Angus, and despite herself she finds that she’s falling for for him.

It was pretty impressive that MacLean made Angus such an appealing romantic hero, because he was an unlikable character in Captured by the Highlander. She does make Angus totally sympathetic however, by revealing more of his tragic past and showing that he’s repentant for his previous actions. Gwendolen, meanwhile, is a heroine I was really rooting for. She was brave-picking up arms to defend her castle. She was selfless in agreeing to marry her enemy for the good of her people. And she was able to stand up to Angus, the most feared warrior in the land. I loved her spunk and everything about her. MacLean did a great job of alternating equally between Gwendolen and Angus’s perspectives. MacLean just did a really great job of writing in the third person omniscient POV.

So, if you enjoyed the first installment in MacLean’s Highlander Trilogy, you’ll love this incredible sequel. The plot is fast-paced and the romance smoldering. There are even some cool elements of prophecies and psychic abilities that are wonderfully woven into the story. I loved this book. I hope you do too.

2.5 stars really

The author did do a good job with making the hero a ruthless bad ass with redeeming qualities and I liked the heroine much better in this installment. But something about MacLean's choice of words frequently takes me out of the story. For example when I hear someone talking about being 'kicked in the nuggets', it reminds me more of a 12-year-old American middle school kid than a historical Highland warrior. Maybe I'm wrong and that was an olden time saying of yore... but it didn't feel right. And that's just one example.

Also, I personally do not like to be spoon fed what I should feel or told what conclusions to draw. The hero was someone who had betrayed someone close to him. He therefore had trust issues and self esteem issues. I think the average reader is certainly smart enough to put two and two together and realize that a lot of his trust issues comes from the fact that he feels guilty about his mistakes and thinks basically that he can't trust anyone since he can't even trust himself. Yet, there is constant unnecessary navel gazing and self-analysis going on. That threw me out of the time period and made me feel more like I was reading a 'costume drama' rather than being transported to another time/place.

MacLean obviously has a legion of fans and I can understand it, but I suppose I look for something a bit different in my historicals. I won't be finishing the trilogy.

Lovely.
Filled with angst, loyalty, betrayals & Love.
It reminded me of Judith McNaught "Kingdom of Dreams".
I certainly have something for: Scottish, Warrior, Marriage of Convenience, Enemies in the beginning. and this story had them all.
its really interesting to see the relationship change from hatred to love ..

Oh Angus, how you won me over!! Again... I need a highlander :-). This book was definitely more romance than history but it was awesome all the same. I'm still loyal to Duncan but I have forgiven, and god forbid, kind of fallen for Angus. Damn highlanders, they make my heart race!!!

I don't know what's wrong with me. these books with raving reviews do nothing for me. I find this book barely ok. at least I finished it. it is full of lust, I will give it that. I can't say anything else about it, nothing positive.
