This riveting book offers 20 harrowing, real-life tales of sea kayaking accidents that will not only keep readers on the edge of their seats, but also instruct them with potentially life-saving lessons.
Excellent read for anyone interested in sea kayaking and even just outdoor safety in general. I particularly appreciated the "Lessons Learned" section that follows each story that talks about how to each incident could have been prevented/mitigated. The top three lessons can largely be summarized as: 1) A lifejacket does you no good if you're not wearing it. 2) If you're in the Pacific Northwest and you're kayaking in anything but relatively calm waters really close to shore, you do need a wetsuit. 3) Just because you've practiced a skill like rolling your kayak in a swimming pool, do not assume you'll be able to do it in rough seas. But really, there is a wealth of info here.
Many — not all — of the stories in this book concern solo boaters who got into trouble while sea kayaking. While it was written quite a while ago, and though equipment has changed, I found the lessons to still be valuable. Each story is accompanied by lessons learned, in addition to extensive notes about safety: equipment, training, technique, judgement, and more. If you can find this (there are actually quite a few copies floating around as advertised on the inter) I highly recommend it. At a minimum, it shows how easily we can put ourselves into mortal danger.
Good for the purpose of sea kayaking, but only useful if you are going to be sea kayaking. It scared the ever loving shit out of me but alas, probably good information for you to know if you are going to be in ocean currents (in the lee or outside the eddyline). Didn't actually help me that much in my sea kayaking job though.
Story after story of (common) mistakes made by some very experienced paddlers. It's a little dated but definitely worth taking a look at, as we can all always learn something new when it comes to sea kayaking. Enjoy.
You read this kind of book to learn from the mistakes of others. How our hubris can get us into real trouble. While the text is older, the lessons learned are true today.
