Not just because the author is an Ohioan...this series "Words are CATegorical" and the related "sounds like reading" series have jump started an interest in reading in my newly 5-year-old that I never expected. Fun pictures...and unusual examples/use of words intrique little beginning readers. It's hard to get these books back to the library because the kids want to read them over and over.
As with all the others in this series, I got these to share with my children as a fun and cute way to discuss language and have not been disappointed. They are cute and engaging for kids.
We really enjoy Brian P. Cleary's books. He makes learning fun, and this is a silly and humorous rhyming book about contractions. His books really entertain children while teaching them basic concepts; our girls really like them. The illustrations by Brian Gable are cartoony and cute, too - we love the cats.
We've read several of the books in the Words are CATegorical series and we've really enjoyed them. We will certainly look for more books by this author/illustrator team at our local library.
Another great book by Brian P. Cleary. This book described what a contraction is, how to make them, and gave great examples of them. I would highly recommend this book to teach contractions.
