The final battle of the Chūnin Exam is at hand! Sasuke makes it to the arena in time to compete, but the anticipation has only whetted Gaara's terrible bloodlust and strained his already fragile sanity. Can Gaara pull himself together in time to face Sasuke's newfound strength? Or will the demon inside him take complete control and wreak havoc on Konohagakure?!
Masashi Kishimoto (岸本斉史 Kishimoto Masashi) is a Japanese manga artist, well known for creating the manga series Naruto. His younger twin brother, Seishi Kishimoto, is also a manga artist and creator of the manga series O-Parts Hunter (666 Satan) and Blazer Drive. Two of his former assistants, Osamu Kajisa (Tattoo Hearts) and Yuuichi Itakura (Hand's), have also gone on to moderate success following their work on Naruto.
Kishimoto's first work as a manga artist was Karakuri (カラクリ?), which he submitted to Shueisha in 1995. This earned him the Weekly Shōnen Jump's monthly "Hop Step Award" in 1996, granted to promising new manga artists. This was followed in 1997 by a pilot version of Naruto (NARUTO-ナルト-), published in Akamaru Jump Summer. In 1998, Kishimoto premiered as a Weekly Shōnen Jump artist with a serialized version of Karakuri in Weekly Shōnen Jump, but it proved unpopular and was canceled soon after. In 1999, a serialized version of Naruto began publication in Weekly Shōnen Jump and quickly became a hit.
The long-awaited battle begins and it is a huge teaser of both ninja's skill set. But to finally see Sasuke's iconic new move is a blast, and even more to see a glimpse into Gaara's spirit animal... spirit monster? A bit saddened by the length of it, but also how much interruption occurs to it from the spectators and what not.
This is however the volume where the bigger picture starts to unravel and it is the beginning of great things to come. Time to really put everyone's skills to the test!
A much faster and engaging read than previous books. The action flowed very nicely with wicked cool entrances by certain characters and someones psycho trigger being pushed. Also Shikamaru being Shikamaru. And Shino being underrated but able to sneak around. This book is more about Sasuke in a way, showing how much he has changed. And he has in this book, going from a somewhat desperate, cocky but still rookie edge, to still cocky but much more focused and badass. Naruto also has a moment or two in which to shine. Also, I have to say, I love Shikamaru and Naruto working together. I don't know why, there's just something fun about their dynamic. They're alike in a lot of ways and different in ways you might not expect.
Hmmm. Gaara's inner monster is certainly intriguing, I'll give Kishimoto that. But the buildup to the Sasuke vs. Gaara led me to believe the fight would be nothing short of amazing - and it wasn't amazing, only short.
Orochimaru for now is an extremely uninteresting villain, and his motivation is laughable. I realize Kishimoto wants to portray him as thoroughly amoral and evil, but as of now manages only to depict him as yawn-inducingly boring and rather intellectually limited.
The only bright moment of this volume was Kakashi's dog, sad-faced Pakkun. Besides the dog, though... Welp, I sure hope this manga picks up soon and lives up to its name!
I think this volume was mainly focused on a fight of supremacy between Kakashi and Guy and their students. For example, think about Guy and Lee's reactions to Sasuke's amazing Taijutsu moves. However, it's always apparent that Guy takes this rivalry more seriously than Kakashi ever does. Partly because Kakashi is kind of conceited, and maybe for all the right reasons lol.
As for Lee, I believe no one can deny the power of his character. I mean think about the pain he has endured to come this far, and of course there's no denying that he lost to Garaa and hurt himself to the extent of putting his career at stake---but he hasn't gone down without a fight.
Obviously, the recurring theme of the manga is the concept of never giving up, and in Lee we see the same spirit as Naruto. There's obviously other Leaf shinobi who represent the same will of fire.
Overall, by far, the most enjoyable and sophisticated Naruto read.
Kicking off with Chapter 109: Leaf, Dance! The battle between Temari and Shikamaru is over after Shikamaru surrenders. To the eyes of the examiners this is a good show of leadership and brilliance. The next match up is between Gaara of the Sand and Uchiha, Sasuke. The crowd grows restless with the wait. This is caused by Kakashi's perpetual tardiness, but just as Sasuke is about to be disqualified, they poof into the stadium. See this highly aggressive fight for yourselves. Cheers and Happy Readings!
Okay, this is probably one of my favorites. No it has nothing to do with my favorite crazy desert villain sort of, misunderstood character over here. Okay maybe a little. Well, maybe it has to do with well, that looks like a lot is happening in this one. Story picking up and it is awesome.
Well the Chunin Exams have concluded in an unconventional manner, the assault of the Village by the Sand and Sound ninja. Things are not looking good for our band of ninja as Sasuke went off in pursuit of Gaara and the Third Hokage has been taken into closed combat with Orichimaru!!

After a relatively quiet volume (for Naruto) Vol. 13 explodes with action and tension. It starts with one of the grandest entrances in all of comics, as Kakashi and Sakura mysteriously return to the Chunin exams. Before the match between Sakura and the psychopathic Gaara begins, Naruto and Shikamaru are innocent bystanders to Gaara slaughtering two toughs who ask him to throw his bout for Lords betting on the matches. Finally, after several volumes of suspense, Sakura and Gaara's match begins, but isn't completed before Orochimaru's well-planned civil war begins and the life of the fourth Hokage and the safety of all of Konoha is in jeopardy. This is superior and amazing storytelling by the great author and artist Masashi Kishimoto.
Sasuke was MIA so his match was postponed, but he has returned with a bang! Due to Orochimaru's Operation: Destroy Konoha, the chunin exams final come to a shocking halt in the middle of Sasuke's match against bloodthirsty Gaara. Third Hokage is facing Orochimaru whereas Sasuke is following ninjas from Sand village, while a four-man team created by Kakashi is on the move to stop Sasuke. The operation to destroy Konoha is underway and Konoha is retaliating as best as they could to save invaluable lives. I'm dying to see the THIRD Hokage in action!
- The most waited fight begins: Uchiha Sasuke vs Gaara - Gaara nearly transformed to One-Tailed Beast, Shukaku - His defense was penetrated by Sasuke's new technique, Chidori. - The Sunagakure shinobis started their plan to crush Konoha - Sasuke went chasing Gaara and the Sand Siblings. - Naruto, Sakura and Shikamaru with the help of Pakkun were assigned to help Sasuke. - Orochimaru disguised as the Kazakage. - The Third Hokage vs Orochimaru.
I was waiting for the development of the story of Sasuke and Orochimaru. I finally could read about that. I noticed that Sasuke changed his costume. His appearance was totally changed and his mind was changing into the darkness. I also exited again for the battle of Sasuke and Gaara! Two strongest characters were struggling each other! The advance speed of the story came back again, too. I love Sasuke’s “Chidori” . First appearance of it was here, I thought it appeared later than I expected.
Creo que este tomo se siente como el preludio a algo más grande. Tiene muy buenos momentos, como Kakashi y Gai peleando codo a codo. Pero al tener muchos paneles de pelea prefiero la versión animada.
