A world-class runner. A committed Christian. A life of courageous service. Meet Eric Running to Win. This Scottish runner bypassed an Olympic qualifying race because it was being held on a Sunday. Then he qualified in a different race and won a gold medal (in world record time!) in the 1924 Paris games. But Eric Liddell left his fame behind to become a missionary in China. His dramatic story, which inspired the Academy Award-winning 1981 film Chariots of Fire, will challenge you to run the race of life mentioned in Hebrews 12:1–2: Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith. This easy-reading, novelized biography details Liddell’s life and ministry, and the sacrifices he made in commitment to God. You’ll be inspired to follow his example, as he followed the example of Christ. . .and run the race of life to win.
Another great biography on Eric Liddell. Oh, this Christian man's life has been so inspiring to me. When I was younger remember reading a different book on him, but not liking it because he died. Now though that I've grown older, I see the testimony of a life lived wholeheartedly for God. I desired to serve God as Eric did, to keep striving for the priceless, eternal riches in Christ Jesus rather than the temporary pleasures of the world.
My Rating/ Age Recommendation: 5 out of 5 Stars/ 13+
This is a book every young Christian should read. Please read it, it will touch you heart and life, in ways you never imagined!
Eri Liddell was a world class athlete. Apart from the physical exertions of competing, he could have had a comfortable and acclaimed life. Eric Liddell was a much loved preacher and public speaker. He could have toured the UK and the world speaking in comfortable church and auditoriums. He could have been well-sed of the Lord.
Instead, he returned to China where he had been born. His parents were Scottish, but served as missionaries in China. He went to his parent's homeland for his education and while he was there excelled in many sporting activities. He is well-known for winning an Olympic medal and setting numerous records. Some of which were not beaten for many decades.
His passion for running was second to his passion for serving God. In fact, he ran because he believed it pleased the Lord to do so. His integrity was an outstanding characteristic and guided his behavior as an athlete every bit as much as it did his service as a missionary.
This is an excellent book that I highly recommend.
As I wrote in a previous book review: Your children want heroes - give them something better than Ironman or Superman, give them real life heroes like Eric and Florence Liddell.
