Margaret McNamara is the Christopher Award–winning author of more than two dozen books for young readers, including the Robin Hill School series. The Fairy Bell Sisters series is inspired not only by her love of the classic sisterhood novel Little Women but by her own experiences growing up with older sisters (and a baby brother). Margaret and her family live in New York City, but they spend part of their summer on an island in Maine very much like Sheepskerry Island.
My children love these little books. They thoroughly enjoy each and every story, as if they are all unique and individual without any cause for similarity among them. Even though sometimes, they might seem tedious and repetitive to me as a parent, I do enjoy being able to read short-stories to my children that are clean and respective.
This is a story about a first grade class who are learning all about the first thanksgiving. As the book progresses and the children are all dressed up in thanksgiving costumes the fire alarm goes off and they are all required to go outside, where the younger children stare at them. This story is very simple with great illustrations which are detailed, large, colorful, and done with watercolors with black ink on top. The text is nice and large, which would be great for young readers. This story is also appropriate for young readers due to its simplicity and school setting. I would use this book to teach the importance of classroom rules. I would also be a great book to use during thanksgiving.
This is a "Ready to Read level 1" book. It has one sentence per page but not very many repeatative words; so I would say more for a merging into level 2 reader. A class is getting ready to put on a Thanksgiving play and they are getting into their costumes when the fire drill rang. They go outside in costume and the Kindergarten class loves them! 'gobble gobble' they say to the 'turkey'...
