The White Rabbit is late for the Duchess. The Cheshire Cat won't stop grinning. And the Hatter is, well, mad. In the middle of it all is Alice, a young girl with a vivid imagination and a family life that's less than perfect. Follow Alice as she escapes her Sheffield home to find adventure in a topsy-turvy world. Based on Lewis Carroll's classic tale, Alice breathes fresh life into a much-loved story about rabbit holes, pocket watches and talking caterpillars. Sheffield native Laura Wade brings you Wonderland as you've never seen it before. Alice was first presented in June 2010 at the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield.

I am currently in this production of Alice playing Alice, herself. It has a marvellous twist on the classic and is definitely a favourite of mine.

An interesting adaptation of Alice's Adventure in Wonderland, with the fairly common interpretation that wonderland is a metaphor for mental health.

In this particular adaptation, it deals with grief and is not too subtle. However, it does have some new examples of the absurd word play of the original. I would generally recommend Anthony Neilson's Dissocia over it though, as a looser adaptation, keeping the Wonderland as mental health metaphor but perhaps being more creative with it.

Much like Posh, Wade seems to paint with a thick brush.

This was such an enjoyment to read and a fully, brand new version of Alice. Still with her curiosity and wonder but also power and determination as she utilises her sense of self against others who may try to repress or remould her identity. Wade’s whit and dry humour in the bonkers world of Wonderland is such a splendour to read and elevated the play to a whole new level. Of course the lack of costume and exact set (e.g dad comes out of sofa!) can lead the brain to wonder and truly hackle how the play could truly be done live ?

Another brilliant play from Laura Wade. Great take on the classic tale of Alice in Wonderland but with an interesting dose of context.
