Una lettura che non mi aspettavo perché dalla sinossi mi ero fatta tutt'altra idea di quello a cui sarei andata incontro. Pensavo a una storia leggera, spensierata e divertente e invece è stata un mix di più stati d'animo. Sicuramente ci sono diverse situazioni tragicomiche che spingono a sorridere se non a ridere, ma si tratta sempre di un riso un po' amaro, visto che comunque si parla di una famiglia alle prese con un ammalato di Parkinson. La descrizione dello stato a cui la malattia riduce una persona non lascia spazio all'immaginazione e vengono anche esplicitate tutte le difficoltà, i dubbi e le angosce che i parenti devono affrontare.
Una lettura che mi ha fatta ridere e piangere nello stesso momento e che ho trovato assolutamente straziante nel finale. Sfido chiunque a leggerlo senza versare una lacrima.

Ik vond het bij vlagen wel een grappig boek. Verder vond ik het boek vooral erg negatief. Allemaal een erg zwaar leven. Veel nadrukken op fysieke aspecten. Onnodig veel geschreven over genitaliën. Het einde vond ik helemaal bizar. Al met al geen aanrader wat mij betreft.

I was looking forward to this one after What we Did on our Holiday, but it didn't live up to that. The ending of the book was a good twist, but I just couldn't warm to the protagonist at all

Il segreto dell' ultima estate è un racconto con accurate descrizioni, sia per quanto riguarda i luoghi di Malta e gli storici assedi dei cavalieri di San Giovanni, sia per quanto riguarda ogni singolo personaggio snocciolato piano piano.
È la classica storia che non ti aspetti, personalmente lo scritto è abbastanza lento nelle sue vicissitudini; una vacanza sotto forma di un diario giornaliero di due settimane che racchiude il declino di una malattia che purtroppo alcune persone vivono è con la quale convivono ogni giorno: il morbo di Parkinson.
Narra dei sentimenti contrastanti che arriva a provare la famiglia che si ritrova a dover combattere con questa malattia; tuttavia non mi ha esaltato tanto quanto
-la biblioteca dei libri proibiti
o -l' inganno delle pagine segrete però né ho apprezzato il coraggio di raccontare una storia così che lascia una grande tristezza nell' anima.

John Harding's first book "What we did on our summer holiday" was one of the best books I'd read in a long time and I had high hopes for this one ... but sadly they didn't come to fruition. The characters in this just didn't grab me - in fact, I found the lead character quite unpleasant and really didn't care what happened to him! A shame.
