A biography written about John Wesley and his relations with Sophia Hopkey, a relationship that would eventually tarnish his reputation within both Georgia and the church. Hardcover. Original Jacket. Slight Edgewear and Chipping. Previous owners signature on the cover page. Some writing on the introduction page. Good/Good.
A very scholarly book with an unfortunately lurid title. The author has read all the first hand accounts and compiles them in this book. She uses the Wesley journals, correspondence, and the earliest biographies of John Wesley as sources. The first half of the book is about the journey and arrival in Georgia. The second half about the relationship wi5h Sophy.
Well-written, fast paced, and factually based on original historical research. Reads like a novel but based on significant historical research and excerpts from Wesley's encrypted journals. As someone who has been fascinated by Wesley's life and work ever since first reading his biography in high school, as well as my interests in the history of Coastal Georgia over the past three decades, this book truly brings history to life. For anyone seeking a greater understanding of the human interest side of the story of Wesley's mission to Colonial Georgia, this book is an excellent resource.
