Herman Vowell was a cowboy; Betty was a city girl. But their powerful love survived the dark days of World War 2, the encroachment of civilization into their isolated ranch, and the devastating ravages of breast cancer.
Rick Steber, the author of more than 30 books with sales of more than a million copies, has received national acclaim for his writing. His numerous awards include the Western Writers of America Spur Award for Best Western Novel, Western Heritage Award, Benjamin Franklin Award, Mid-America Publishers Award, Oregon Library Association Award, Oregon Literary Arts Award, Independent Publishers Book Award, Indies Award for Excellence, and the USA Best Book Award. Three of his books have been optioned to movie production companies.
In addition to his writing, Rick is an engaging Western personality and has the unique ability to make his characters come alive as he tells a story. He has spoken at national and international conferences and visits schools where he talks to students about the importance of education, developing reading and writing skills, and impressing upon them the value of saving our history for future generations.
Rick has two sons, Seneca and Dusty, and lives near Prineville, Oregon. He writes in a cabin in the timbered foothills of the Ochoco Mountains.
My folks grew up in this area, Klamath Falls, which is prominent in the book. I’m actually here now having returned for a family funeral. I spent 5 years of my life here and love the open expanse of southern Oregon. If you love horses you’ll probably love this book. If you’re a cowboy or just wished you coulda been you’ll probably love this book. If you believe in love and commitment you’ll probably love this book. If you’re interested in 20th century life and history… you get the picture.
Also side note, there’s an excellent representation of a pregnant woman receiving the health care she needs and not once is the word Abortion used despite the procedure receiving national coverage. Interesting how attitudes have changed so much around a necessary and life saving procedure.
I’d give this a higher rating if not for one instance of offensive/discriminatory language and a second instance of outdated language. Since this was published in 2002 the tired excuse of “that’s how it was back then” is well, tired.
I love this book so far because of the love and dedication that he has for the love of his life....write more later.
I love this book....it is a romantic love story of a couple that has a deep love for each other and living the life in the country and job that they love and enjoy....I would fully recommend this book to any one that loves, love stories and loves the ranch life style....
