A looking glass into the everyday violence that supports the current power structure, Tragic Kingdom prescribes a glitter-coated pill to ease the swallowing. The effect of the pill once digested, however, depends upon the viewer. This large, lavishly produced hardcover serves as the catalog for Camille Rose Garcia's first solo museum show outside of Los Angeles. Tragic Kingdom surveys her work with an emphasis on her most recent creations, showcasing paintings, drawings, sketchbooks, prints, and more.
I saw the Tragic Kingdom exhibit in San Jose and fell immediately in love with Camille Rose Garcia's work. The images evoke so much more than they portray, and the warnings they communicate—of ecological, environmental, and spiritual damage we're wreaking on the earth—become real and immediate. While I do think that you need to see her work "in person" to get its full impact, this book is still an amazing collection. Pt aside an hour or two, take a deep breath, and plunge in. It's a trip you won't regret.
Found this book in the charity shop. The cover caught my eye and just by flicking through a few pages I already felt in love with the art work. I had never heard of the artist before but now I'm exploring more of her amazing art. Such a beautiful and well presented book. Anyone who loves dark art should have this book on their bookshelves.
darkly gorgeous and whimsical...garcia's art comes out of the west coast/l.a. lowbrow/nobrow movement (barry mcgee, mark ryden, etc.)...a commentary on society and its ills in a sly and subtle manner...this also includes original sketches and ideas for several of her series.
