It’s the big final showdown, but Nagisa doesn’t appear to have ever existed? Then who’s that with Minato? Meanwhile, Futaba turns out to be useful to Kuromatsu, while Tsubaki closes in for the kill. Kills.

If I was a cynic, I would say that the moral of the story actually ends up being ‘doing the right thing gets you killed’. I mean, that is a valid interpretation. I won’t say much more about the ending other than the vaguest terms.

As far as delivering on an ending, this does pretty okay. We have a big, splashy climactic showdown and the last minute twists and reveals, things work out, or don’t, and we learn the truth about everything.

Now, as for delivering a satisfying ending, well, that’s trickier. It all ties together, but some of it ties together by hauling stuff in out of nowhere. If there had been even the barest hints beforehand it would have made all the difference, but there was nothing.

Nagisa’s existence is explained away by the absolute most boring thing possible, turning that into an absolute letdown of a reveal. Similarly, there’s a whole side plot about a religious cult that comes out of absolutely nowhere to explain away a ton of plot holes in the most awkward fashion possible.

It just feels like a bit of a massive letdown after the far more provocative and suspenseful starting chapters. Such is the nature of the beast, I suppose, but I would have liked it a tad more compelling beyond just the climax itself.

Outside of that, the ending is reasonably good. It takes a bunch of predictable shifts that I pretty much expected and, as is par for the course, don’t necessarily feel justified by the volumes that lead up to this one.

Now I’m just repeating myself. I don’t think this is bad, but there are better stories of suspense out there. I’m certainly interested in reading Erased still, but I am not compelled to rush out and grab it after this, I have to say.

3.5 stars - it ends sort-of well enough, tossing in some decent symbolism (kind of crammed in at the last second, frankly). But the execution, pardon the expression, really lets it down. I’m not rounding up; when I look at where this started to where it finished there’s just too much of a gap for my liking.

This was a great series. The ending I think was just right. The character development. And the twists. The characters were connected more than I thought they were when I first read it.

Well, it's the last book! The main reason to read this series, which is to see how they resolve the Freaky Friday scenario (). It's an OKAY resolution, and a bit contrived, but there's only so many ways it would "reasonably" resolve, including one story (not this one) that had the switched characters just slowly forget their new identities and revert to their old ones.

The ending is happy, at least, and even their mom's disappearance is explained, so it's worth reading IF you've read all the prior books. Less so if you're only reading this one.

The dramatic and action packed conclusion of this body-swap murder mystery... that somehow takes a major detour right at the end because... reasons? Look, I was with you through the body-swap, residual memories, and the dirty cop plot, but the corrupt cult leader thing came out of nowhere.

So... disregarding that random weirdness that honestly didn't need to be in the story, I enjoyed it. The suspense is top-notch and the cat-and-mouse game kept me wondering how or if the story would have a happy ending. It got a little rushed at the end, but worth the read.

This series has 5 volumes.

3.75 rounded down!

This was not the ending I was expecting. The last minute redemption of the literal hitman was super trite, and everything worked out way too conveniently/ quickly for a volume I’d been anticipating for so long. A little disappointed with this volume but ultimately it was a riveting series and I’d love to see it animated!

Vol. 5 of Island In A Puddle, really goes out of its way to explore the world’s plot in the last volume. From running and hiding, to revealing past secrets; and how Minato and Kuro are connected.
