Imagine your most stereotypical slice of life book in a little bustling city, but everyone has supernatural powers. That is diamond is unbreakable. For some context and clarity, the series jojo’s bizarre adventure follows a family tree that is plagued by curses, vampires, and other oddities. This one follows Josuke Higashikata the fourth “Jojo”. The story starts off with the previous Jojo of the series; Jotaro Kujo. Whom is looking for Josuke to help him with finding whoever or whatever is making people disappear from their home town Morioh Japan. Jotaro suspects that this is the work of evil “stand” users. A stand is basically a spirit who is helping a particular person with their particular powers. Both Josuke and Jotaro have one.

One thing to note about Araki’s writing is that he cannot think of original names for the life of him. Usually this would be a bad thing, but Araki being the witty devil he is took advantage of Japanese loose copyright laws. Many characters and stands are based off bands. Some of the highlights for this in my opinion are stands such as “pearl jam", and "red hot chilipepper”. It may seem goofy but I find it quite amusing. It is established early on that Josuke’s stand is quite powerful in that it has incredible strength, and it has the ability to heal things and fix objects.

This is a very different pace from the other parts, while part one and two are action packed and fast paced. part four takes a break and doesn't hurry to do anything. It just feels pretty calming to read. But when the action does pick up, it really entices you to keep turning the pages.

As for the art style (because this is a graphic novel) is for a lack of better word is appropriately hilarious. Characters will grow into the foreground if it is an intense moment. Or completely exaggerate facial features to really show emotion. This book is really great for not only people with a great imagination, but for people who lack it. It allows your brain to make really cool hypothetical situations while also explaining enough. It also has stupendous character development, so if you are the type of person to latch on to one character and love him/her like your own child this is the book for you (mine is okuyasu).

All in all Diamond is unbreakable is a fantastic novel with slow bits but very exciting parts as well. It really exemplifies having good friends and the danger of losing them as well. The characters are fantastic and the main villain is honestly ten out of ten. READ THIS PLEASE.

Jotaro is only 28 years old and already too old for this XD also every single drawing of The Hand goes insanely hard. Araki. We know you’re the king okay. The cut of your jib is too fly. They’ll kill you

Wow, there is so much to cover here! Here are some scattered thoughts.

I loooove the setup for part 4. Where do you go from a trans-Asian quest to kill an ancient vampire? You stick within the confines of a cozy, charming little town. I can't praise Araki's courage as an author enough. However, the transition from Stardust Crusaders to the slice of life approach of Diamond is Unbreakable is very smooth given how episodic part 3 is.

I love having Jotaro stick around. He's so overpowered now. It's like he's playing new game plus after unlocking all the overpowered abilities.

Josuke is pretty fun too. Just a chill high school student. He's still a little self-serious like Jotaro, but he's a lot less stuck up and rigid. He feels very much like a 16 year old boy. He's got this bad-boy facade, but he isn't afraid to embrace his goofier, more flamboyant side. He's cool, but he's got some quirks. This gives him tons of charm and magnetism.

Josuke's position as a similar, but more wholesome take on Jotaro is further enforced by his stand's design. Crazy Diamond is seemingly just another punchy ghost like Star Platinum. But I just love the twist the Crazy Diamond actually fixes anything it hits. This subtle change symbolizes the way the series has changed. No longer are conflicts solved by figuring out how to punch the bad guy. And this healing factor lends itself better to the puzzle-like encounters that make Jojo so much fun. Crazy Diamond has so much more utility.

BUT I DO GOTTA TAKE JOSEPH TO TASK. This fucking guy cheated on dear old Suzie Q in his 60's? Unforgivable. This is CHARACTER ASSASSINATION. But it is a good choice to introduce a more lateral relative, rather than continuing the tradition and going with Jotaro's descendant. Instead we get to revel in the awkward family dynamics caused by Josuke's birth. It's also worth noting that the Higashikata family, for as little as we get to see of them, feel like they could be just as interesting as the Joestars. I'm eager to learn more about them.

There's more stuff that I love about part 4. Particularly the ways the it builds on Part 3's weaknesses. But I'm going to hold off until they become more relevant. For now, this is a damn fine start and a surprisingly smooth change of pace.

I'm used to the smoother art style of the Part 4 anime, and seeing Josuke and Okuyasu with Part 3 angles and muscles was a little unsettling...

Memes in this volume:

Yeah, I know this is the anime OP so it's not technically in this, but it's such an iconic meme that I had to include it.

FIRST DUWANG MEME

GO AHEAD MR. JOSDER

tfw you, an adult, have to punch your teenage uncle

Some things never change...

And thus, I instantly fell in love with Tomoko

Another Part 3 kinda-sorta-minor-spoiler?

After I finished reading Stardust Crusaders I decided to continue on to Diamond is Unbreakable. I have to say that part four is probably one of my least favorite parts besides part one. I really love it, but compared to the others it doesn’t make it to the top for me. Don’t get me wrong though I still really enjoy it. After reading it I have to say I enjoy part four more than I did before.
The books begin with Jotaro Kujo, the main protagonist of part three, looking for Josuke Higashikata to split up the will of Joseph Joestar. The Joestar family recently found out that Joseph had an affair with a woman called Tomoko Higashikata in a small town called Morioh. Josuke is a polite and kind hearted highschool student who gets very upset when people make fun of his hair. Jotaro is now a twenty eight year old marine biologist who is calmer and less edgy then his seventeen year old self. He came to Morioh to not only find Josuke, but to take care of a stand user. Throughout the story Josuke, Jotaro, Okuyasu, and Koichi fight powerful stand users and search for a serial killer that has been luring around the town for years. They find the killer, Yoshikage Kira, and kill him.
An interesting idea I think Araki implants into part 4 is the idea of second chances and how people benefit from them. When we first meet Okuyasu he is this enemy stand user trying to kill Josuke after his brother shot Koichi with an arrow. Even though Okuyasu is Josuke’s enemy he risks his life to save him from his brother’s stand. He goes as far as to heal him completely despite him not telling him about his brother's stand. Josuke says that he saved him because even evil people don’t deserve to die. The two become friends
I think another interesting idea that isn’t as highlighted as the rest is this idea of duty and pasting the torch on. We find out that Jotaro is sent to tell Josuke that Joseph is father so he will be written into the will. Jotaro could have just told him that and left, but he decided to stay and hunt down the other stand users in the town. He still sticks around even when Angelo is defeated to kill off other deadly stand users. In later books we find out Jotaro has a wife and daughter, which means his daughter was seven years old and his marriage was still pretty young. He spends months away from his family to help a group of kids kill a serial killer in a town he has never been before. He feels the duty to protect not only the ones he loves, but the ones who can not protect themselves. Since Jotaro spends the rest of his life fighting off stand users he ends up divorcing his wife due to his absence and their safety. It is a cruel fate, but it is one that is necessary so he can hand off the torch to his daughter and Josuke. If stand users didn’t constantly target the Joestar family he would have brought his daughter to Morioh and would have had a good relationship with his wife, which is shown in Eyes Over Heaven.
One element that I appreciated in this book was the contrast between Josuke and Jotaro. Although Jotaro is now 28 years old and Josuke is 16, they had pretty similar teenage years. Back when Jotaro was 17 he had to fight extremely strong stand users to save his mothers life as well as the world from Dio’s control. Josuke has to fight aggressive stand users to protect his town. Josuke might have had a less toned down experience form Jotaro, but they both experienced similar trama. They were both forced to mature fast or some one they loved would be harmed, both are labeled as punks, both have absent fathers, and they both lost a loved one whom they were very close to dramatically. When Jotaro was 17 he was cold and never showed his emotions to anyone, he just assumed everyone knew how he felt. He pushed away those he loved to protect them, even if they didn’t understand that. Josuke on the other hand is quite emotional. He apologizes when he finds out his father was a cheater, cries when his friend died, and becomes angry when people trash talk his hair. The physical differences between these two even further my point. Josuke has more soft features and kinder eyes than the rest of the Jojos. His pompadour hair with his peace and heart pins definitely make him look the least threatening out of all the Jojos as well. Jotaro on the other hand was totally different when he was a teen. He was more muscular, had sharper features, and towered over the people around him. He is dressed in mostly black and has a gold chain dangling from the color of his school uniform. The contrast between these two personalities and clothes speaks volumes on their own, so I will not point them out any further. I appreciate how the author played with these differences during the fight between the rat stand user as well the fight against Angelo. I wish Josuke was referenced or even integrated into future parts, but he isn't.

"JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable Volume 1" or ジョジョの奇妙な冒険 29 東方仗助登場する offers a riveting start to the series, blending eccentric characters, intense battles, and a cool storyline. Set in the chill town of Morioh, it follows Josuke Higashikata, a high school student with a powerful Stand, as he navigates the bizarre occurrences in his hometown.

As a high school student, I find Josuke's struggles relatable, from dealing with the complexities of adolescence to discovering his identity and purpose. His journey mirrors the challenges and uncertainties many high schoolers face, just in a fantastical setting. Moreover, the diverse cast of characters reflects the mix of personalities found in any high school, adding depth and richness to the narrative.

The volume's themes of friendship, loyalty, and self-discovery resonate strongly with the high school experience, reminding readers of the importance of camaraderie and staying true to oneself amidst life's oddities. Additionally, the fast-paced action and sneaky plot twists keep the reader engaged, making it a thrilling read for both fans of the series and newcomers.

Overall, "JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable Volume 1" offers an entertaining blend of humor, drama, and excitement, with themes that resonate deeply with the high school experience, making it a must-read for fans of manga and adventure.

PART 4! JOSUKE! THE GANG. wow does the arstyle fuck me up tho. its not bad or anything but after seeing the anime its weird seeing part 4 in part 3 style. like it really shows how much josuke and jotaro look alike but like... that's not my wacky and quirky main character with a heart of gold. he look so scary but i know it changes and it doesn't make me love part 4 any less. IM SO GLAD TO BE IN MORIOH AND TAKE A LOOK IN THIS CRAZY, NOISE, AND BIZARRE TOWN!!!!

8/10 (My review for all of Diamond is Unbreakable, not just Book 1)

Still had the campy craziness of Part 3 but toned down a bit for a quieter small-town setting. I enjoyed it a lot, but I felt like it was a bit too long. If maybe 4-5 stand battles were cut, I'd love the length of this story way more.

Unbelievably inventive!

Start of a new chapter is almost always fun to read.
And I like this new JoJo.

As opposed to Jojo’s parts 1-3(generic boring shounen) this one in volume is better than all 3 of those. Hopefully this quality keeps up!
