How to Talk About Jesus without Freaking Out with Study Guide

Rate this book
Do you "freak out" when it comes to sharing Christ with others? God commands all believers to go and share the "Good News," but most believers don't do it because they're afraid-afraid of personal rejection, afraid of being ridiculed, afraid of not knowing how, or afraid of not having all the answers. How to Talk About Jesus Without Freaking Out offers easy solutions to those who freeze up, freak out, or "pass" on the thrill of talking to someone about Jesus-and that's almost all of us. It is built on the authors' nine years of experience teaching folks of all backgrounds and religions in Hollywood how to share their faith. This humorously written book will help Christians push their fears aside and start fulfilling the great commission.

(Found an old book review I wrote in 2004)
I can’t imagine Jesus discussed with the disciples how to go unto all nations without “freaking out.” Cheezy title aside, the reality is that we all probably could use some techniques and a little coaching to be more effective witnesses in today’s post-modern culture. The authors should know… their experiences and ministries have been involved with some of the most unfriendly to the Christian message these days—Hollywood!

This book put witnessing in perspective. It’s not our job to convert people to Christ—that’s God’s job. Our job is to recognize opportunities to share our faith with the people (“pre-Christians”) we come in contact with, be prepared with what to say, and help move a person one step closer to making a decision for Christ. The book uses an easy to understand model showing the importance of cultivating relationships with people before expecting a harvest. “You never know if the person you’re talking to is twenty steps or one step from coming to Christ,” says Karen Covell. So you shouldn’t be discouraged when “every witnessing encounter doesn’t end with the person falling to his knees and asking Jesus into his heart.”

After establishing the expectations of witnessing, the authors help you understand the importance of understanding the pre-Christian’s own story; being able to share your own story (via a 3 minute testimony); and most importantly, His story—the plan of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ. The book gives coaching on explaining any of several tracts that you may have seen before (The Bridge, ABC’s of Salvation, etc.). It also addresses nuances of witnessing with various types of pre-Christians—family, friends, co-workers, complete strangers, and even how to deal with various “tough nuts to crack” - atheists, the wealthy, New-Agers, Gen-Xers, unsaved church members, etc. The book has a 10-week study guide, which the authors use in their small-group ministry in Hollywood.

This book is about impacting people that we care about. The process is, basically, their story; our story; His story. We learn about what they believe about God, faith, and the church. That earns us the opportunity to share the story of our faith walk. As appropriate, we can then talk about His story - redemption through Jesus Christ. Of course, this may not all happen in one sitting. For those of us who aren't gifted as evangelists, this book provides a relatively pain-free way of discussing God with those we care about. Knowing their story helps us understand what barriers there may be to excepting Jesus.

This book takes an honest look at sharing one's faith. It nicely finds a place between two extremes of being forceful in evangelism and doing nothing. It offers a practical guide for Christians to get past their apprehensions about sharing their faith.

Overall, I appreciated the honesty of the book and how well it relates to people's real situations. The second part of the book solidifies the simple concept of: their story, your story, His story. I was less impressed with the final chapters of the book, especially the on on apologetics which hardly did justice to the topic. But overall it was a helpful book and a good reminder to share our faith effectively, lovingly, and without fear.

For those of you that are afraid to express your faith in Christ Jesus, because you don't know enough of the bible and you don't want to be stuck by a question you dont know the answer to. This is the book for you. For starters, it's not us their denying anyway. In this book, you will find simple steps on how to pronounce your faith as we are called to do.
