As usual, I'm gonna get the negatives out first. I didn't really care for the whole Lost Woods bit. On the Road Again is a funny reference, since Johnny and Gyro keep setting out on the same road again. But the explanation didn't make a whole lot of sense to me. As someone who has seen this trope pop up a lot, the implementation here was pretty predictable. Come on Johnny, haven't you played Paper Mario? And similarly to what happened with Mista, I hated when Johnny was shot in the head, only for it to not really matter. Every time, it baffles me why Araki would choose to use such harrowing imagery as the protagonist getting shot in the skull, only for it to immediately be undermined and mean nothing.

Regardless I adore True Man's World. Ringo is the perfect continuation of Gyro's conflict. Ringo seeks to throw himself into danger for the sake of growing. He strives to forge himself in the fires of hardship, even if that means he has to start those fires himself. It's like he's trying to artificially create the challenging circumstances that would create a Dio or Guts. That's why he was shaking before the shootout with Gaucho; in that moment, Ringo was unsure of whether he would live to see another day. But that's exactly the sort of feeling Ringo is seeking out. After all, Ringo's illness could only be cured by staring into the face of death and finding the resolve to kill.

I take it Ringo would be a fan of Vygotsky. That is probably the saddest sentence I have ever written, but I'm gonna double down. Vygotsky says that growth occurs at the edges of what we are capable of doing independently. To summarize (and throw out plenty of nuance, particularly as it pertains to education), we grow by doing what were are barely capable of doing- by pushing our limits. Similarly to how, in weight lifting, you may only be able to do 8 reps instead of 10 when increasing weight. According to Ringo, the "True Man's World" lies at the border between the familiar and the unknown. By living in the discomfort of what is currently just beyond our grasp. The frontier where we push ourselves out into deeper water, unsure of whether we have what it takes to make it back to shore.

Ringo feels that society has become too complacent with the familiar, content to play things safe, risk nothing, and gain nothing. The state of American territory at the time may reflect this. Ringo was born after America's westward expansion had concluded. He has no "frontier" to "tame", no civil war to throw himself into. Ringo is living in a time where the momentum that carried American imperialists out west had crashed up against the shore and the nation would focus on further developing what was already known, familiar, and safe. Ultimately, it could be said that Ringo died because he retreated took the safe option- because he made a safe bet. He knew where Gyro would attack and took a defensive stance at the cost of making his shot less accurate. This would prove fatal, as Gyro cleverly and fearless charged with a full assault, rendering Ringo's defensive stance meaningless. If Ringo had taken the greater risk, it would have at worst been a draw.

In his efforts, Ringo seeks out a fair duels where the intent is to kill. Honest and pure, as he might call it. He keeps no secrets, going so far as to let his would-be opponents know when they don't stand a chance. He informs both Gaucho and Gyro when they are too far away to kill him. His trump card, Mandom, can be seen as an insurance policy for underhanded tactics. Even when Ringo uses Mandom in a fair duel, he's still surviving mortal injuries for the sake of learning, adapting, and growing. It's easy to lose sight of the significance of such a thing given how many characters in Jojo shrug off mortal wounds.

It is through his duel with Ringo that Gyro begins to grow. He develops the same (literal) fire in his eyes that Johnny has. I haven't read far enough ahead to see how it all pans out, but this seems due to Gyro's determination to save Johnny and to no longer be a "conformist". Gyro began the Steel Ball Run at the behest of his king and to the disappointment of his ancestors. He underwent this journey for the king's sake, with shame in his heart. But from now on, each step Gyro takes forward will be his own. He will no longer run away from his shame, but towards justice and understanding. At least, that's the way things seem to be right now. It's made clear that Gyro is in the process of finding his own path. One that he has chosen for himself and follows for his own sake.

Welcome to the true man's world.

wow!
I loved every page and every panel. I'm so so impressed with Araki's ability to create this mind-blowing story and this gorgeous ever-improving art.
I'm looking forward to figure out the mystery of the corpse parts. I can't wait to see what Mrs Steel's role in the story will be. I like her a lot.

Gyro is even more beautiful in this volume. How is it even possible.

4 estrellas.

“Solo quiero entender. ¿En verdad Marco tiene que ser ejecutado? Entender es mi máxima prioridad. Si no lo hago, nunca podré ir hacia adelante. No podré ir a ningún lado.

I love Gyro’s moment of realization here: “I just want to understand”, “my path to understanding is the ultimate priority. Or else I’ll never be able to move forward! Nowhere! Not even the path to the future! I won’t be able to pursue it!”. The battle with Ringo really brought the best out of him- it's probably my favourite stand-battle in the series thus far- even topping Dio's dinosaurs.

Furthermore, the other happenings here are great!
The entire stand battle with Ringo during the True Man’s world arc was astonishing, sad, and very reflective of the series’s fascination with HONOUR and DUTY.
The ending set up a lovely conflict between Lucy Steel and Valentine.

Another banger.

Series: Steel Ball Run #8
Rating:4 stars - It was really good

This volume continues with Gyro, Johnny and Hot Pants being stuck in a loop due to Ringo Roadagain's stand ability. Ringo's stand was very interesting and the battle against him was intense. I was not expecting such an epic shootout between him and Gyro. I really do love seeing how Johnny and Gyros' friendship has grown though. This ends with the race creator's wife spying on the President and intercepting information sent by Ringo. I will be very interested in seeing how this plays out.

CW: gun violence; sexual assault; death

Probably my favorite volume of the manga so far, I love the insight we get on Gyro and seeing his beliefs challenged. I liked the actual battle that ensued in addition to the user having an interesting outlook on the path to enlightenment and growing his spirit.

The art was awesome as usual and I think the end of the True Man's World panels will be burned in my brain lol. The last chapter was a nice change of pace and gives insight to the forces outside of the race, and I'm interested to see where it goes
